I have a VERY unusual name. In fact its so unusual that if I told you and you googled it the only thing that would come up would be my Facebook profile (I tried it......so as I may need to post incognito one day I can't tell you.

Anyway despite not being paricularly thrilled with my name when I was a teenager, I love it now and would love to name forthcoming DC's with something unusual.

What are the most unusual names you have heard of for both sexes???

I once met a little girl called Cookie star or something-it was cookie and the middle name was quite wacky. She loved it

A lot of my cousins have chosen unusual names for their DC

There are others that I have forgotten.

How has making up words become the basis of naming children?

Antdamm · 30/11/2008 13:12

Am living in Ireland just now - had expected to hear loads of irish names with extra vowels etc. Yesterday wen walking to the shops with neighbour, we bumped into a nigerian woman and her daughter who my neighbour knew - daughters name was Shithay pronounced Shith-ay , thought it suited her.
Got back to neighbours house for coffee and she told me how it was spelt - Shithead - silent d!!!

Amazing how you could name your child that!!

Know of a Roman, Herbie - presumably after the car and a Bingo

littlemiss26 · 02/12/2008 14:13

well I've taught a diamante (girl), Chanel (girl and I know a ladybird (girl), Myanne (girl) and a Kiki (girl).

not come across any odd boys names so far - don't think parents are as brave with them!

Prince for a boy

Breeze for a girl which I think is lovely and really suits her.

pinkmagic1 · 02/12/2008 14:37

Antdamm, I'm suprised it is allowed to register
a child in this country as Shithead, but then again it might mean 'pretty flower' or something like that in Nigerian!
I once booked a flight for a Turkish man called Fathi Cok!

SAEJ · 02/12/2008 15:44

I know a Nazbanoo, a Thumbelina ans once met a toddler (boy) in Liverpool called Tornado!!!

Jenbot · 02/12/2008 17:38

I'm friends with a Kether and a Pearsall.
Know a Joby. All male.
Shared a taxi with a random old lady one time called Zylpha which I quite liked, um, I think the other people I know with unusual names are because of their nationalities, like Happy and Lovely!
Oh, met a Dr whose first name was Pixie too.

Jenbot · 02/12/2008 17:43

:-S Oh just remembered, I came across a young girl through work whose name was "name of animal" with letter Y added, and her surname was "name of same animal".
Like Badgery Badger. But not that.

Honestly.

She seemed quite well adjusted though!

I remember growing up and absolutely hating my name (yes, it is actually Summer). After reading this thread, I am so thankful...it could have been so much worse!!

I understand wanting to give your children unique names, but come on people, children get teased enough, why give the other kids ammunition?

lotuseener · 08/12/2008 11:50

I grew up with a Purnima,a Seneca and a Canaan. (all boys)

I had a friend named Patience and her brother was named Pryce and her sister was named Prudence.

My husband used to know someone named Dimension!

A friend recently named their ds Samwise Gamji (or however you spell it!) And no, they don't shorten it to Sam.

lotuseener · 08/12/2008 15:27

Oh yeah, I also grew up with a Karma and a Justice, they were sister and brother.
I also remember a classmate named Snowshadow.

I grew up in a poncey/hippy/arty small town in California.
