Thoughts on this as a girls name?

Scottie - for a girl.. I’m curious as to what the responses would be on this name today, as I just read a thread from 2018 where this name got slated, and I was quite surprised so it got me wondering it people would have the same reactions to it today..

the thread I read had the majority of the commenters saying it was an awful girls name, it was ridiculous, it was a boys name, she would get made fun of, the poster should think about her child, she’d be called a dog etc etc but I think compared to a lot of names we hear nowadays.. Scottie sounds kind of normal!? What do you think? Is it still a crazy name?

I think it’s cute!

Additup · 09/07/2026 17:56

As in 'beam me up'? 😂
It is an abomination of a name unless you are in Star Trek.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 09/07/2026 17:56

It's really very bad.

Snorlaxo · 09/07/2026 17:57

Would it be her actual name or a nickname?

I think of dogs then Scotland. I don’t think that Scotties are particularly popular dogs so wouldn’t expect many to know that reference but I’d be wondering if you had some sort of Scotland reason for the name. I’d be saying the same name about the boys name Scott too.

Mosaic123 · 09/07/2026 17:57

I immediately think of a dog.

notatinydancer · 09/07/2026 17:57

Awful

Carouselfish · 09/07/2026 17:57

Love so much. As in F Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald's daughter. Has the same vibe as Scout but it's a nicer sound.

robinslittlehelper · 09/07/2026 17:58

Friend I n the USA was called this as she was from Scotland. As a first name nooooo

Snorlaxo · 09/07/2026 17:58

I forgot Beam Me Up 🤦🏻‍♀️ Yes, that’s the most likely thing people will say.

Lins77 · 09/07/2026 18:01

I'm afraid I don't like it - not good for a boy, but worse for a girl.

Edited

That wasn't her actual name though.

Lins77 · 09/07/2026 18:06

Yes, I think okay as a nickname, not as an actual name.

DanceMumTaxi · 09/07/2026 18:07

Please don’t. It might sound cute on a 3 year old, but not so much when she’s 43.

Pallisers · 09/07/2026 18:12

I know a Scottie (in her 50s). It never for a minute occurred to me that it was her actual given name.

Duvetdayneeded · 09/07/2026 18:13

If you want your kid to be called a dog and bitch then yes, lovely.

user293948849167 · 09/07/2026 18:14

Oh god no! It’s a Dog’s name and a male dog at that!
Scott for a boy is ok
Scottie for a girl would have to be a nickname, not sure what for though

LittleBearPad · 09/07/2026 18:15

I wouldn’t.

change cannot GIF

Surely you could say the same about names like Poppy (which is the 7th most popular name in the UK currently) and Daisy (which is 18th). Poppy wasn’t a common name before the 90s, I imagine plenty of people probably thought that’s a cute name for a 3 year old but not a 43 year old.

I work with a lot of teenage girls. This kind of name gets changed. It's hard to define it, but the "Scottie dog" association plus the complete lack of precedent for its use as a girl's name. What is it you like about the name?

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 09/07/2026 18:17

White dog springs to mind in a nano second whereas Poppy makes me think of a flower Sorry.

ShetlandishMum · 09/07/2026 18:17

No. Awful .

Wherethedogsits · 09/07/2026 18:18

It’s not awful.

DramaAlpaca · 09/07/2026 18:19

It's really and truly awful.

flowerworld · 09/07/2026 18:19

I don’t like it. You’ll also get a lot of people pronounce it with the T

KilkennyCats · 09/07/2026 18:21

It’s astoundingly awful.
