Thoughts on this as a girls name?

Scottie - for a girl.. I’m curious as to what the responses would be on this name today, as I just read a thread from 2018 where this name got slated, and I was quite surprised so it got me wondering it people would have the same reactions to it today..

the thread I read had the majority of the commenters saying it was an awful girls name, it was ridiculous, it was a boys name, she would get made fun of, the poster should think about her child, she’d be called a dog etc etc but I think compared to a lot of names we hear nowadays.. Scottie sounds kind of normal!? What do you think? Is it still a crazy name?

Like the same but would immediately think of star trek, a dog or the highlands. Scott is fone or a boy. Xx

It's a bit strange and sounds like a nickname.

That’s because it is. On both counts.

Tbh your OP wasn’t very clear no where did you say you weren’t pg you may want to change your headline

Why? There’s no rule that says you can only ask questions about names if you are pregnant is there? I just saw a thread about a name that everyone hated and thought ‘hey I actually kinda like it I wonder if everyone still hates it now we are in 2026 and live in a world where people are called wolf, bear, willow, blue, Sunday, Wednesday, Tuesday etc’ and turns out everyone does still hate it which is fine and fine to express that given I asked what people thought about it, obviously, but some people have chosen to be rude and condescending

It’s getting quite popular in some areas of the US as a girls name. I can see it working there but not in the UK so much.

UnintentionalArcher · 09/07/2026 21:11

I immediately think of the dog - I live in Scotland though so maybe that makes me slightly more likely to have that response.

What about Frankie? I know a Frankie who is Frankie on her birth certificate

Over time, names that were once diminutives often become the full given name - Frankie is traditionally short for Francesca.

fairydustt · 09/07/2026 21:13

Snorlaxo · 09/07/2026 17:57

Would it be her actual name or a nickname?

I think of dogs then Scotland. I don’t think that Scotties are particularly popular dogs so wouldn’t expect many to know that reference but I’d be wondering if you had some sort of Scotland reason for the name. I’d be saying the same name about the boys name Scott too.

Just to clarify, I’m not pregnant.. there’s no baby.. I didn’t realise posting on this thread was only for discussing actual babies and their names. I just like names and sometimes think of names I would or wouldn’t use, Scottie is a name I kind of like and was interested in others thoughts, universally people don’t like it, which is fine.. it answers my question 😂 I still kind of like it though, I do definitely get the dog connotations though!

Yes it does have the same kind of vibes as names like hunter and Parker

This. ^ Why would anyone be asking about babies names unless they were going to have a baby? 🙄

Lins77 · 09/07/2026 21:21

You never know, maybe in a few years Scottie will be all the rage.

Name trends can be unpredictable.

Also in this case, Scottie can then become a name (for a boy as nn for Scott) thus it can become a name in its own right? But a lot of people on here saying it’s not a name? Surely what you just said shows that diminutive names can become names, and yes this means Scottie would be a boys name, but boys names can become girls names

You don’t have a list of names on your phone for hypothetical children? I’ve had one since I was at school 😂 I have a son, and do want another baby at some point but no plans for any time soon, I do sometimes think about names I would or wouldn’t use in future, is that weird? I don’t think so 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ah, I see. I thought you were responding to the PP saying that Scottie wasn’t a diminutive of any girl’s name with the example of Frankie as a more common one that you also thought wasn’t a diminutive!

I don't like Frankie for girls either.
No offence to any women/girls with these names but Frankie, Stevie, Bobby etc are very 1970s/80s and a bit clunky sounding.
In my personal opinion.

Betadelta · 09/07/2026 21:32

I know a woman called Scotty, but it's a nickname based on her surname (Scott).

I was giving it as an example for a girl’s name. Yes, names do end up being co-opted to the other gender but I was saying that it isn’t a diminutive of a girl’s name (and I’ve mentioned in my other answer to you why I was saying this at all). I think of those things as separate phenomena I suppose.

ETA: I agree it can become a girl’s name, of course - if any girls anywhere are already called it then it is a girl’s name. Anything can be a name, as per Gwyneth Paltrow calling her child Apple, which was deemed very odd at the time. I was just making a different point.

Er, no. Why would I have a hypothetical list of names on my phone? Unless I was pregnant, or trying to conceive? Confused

And I certainly wouldn't be on the baby names forum asking what people think about Adam or Percy for a girl, if I wasn't pregnant, or trying to conceive!

Seriously, why did you post this thread? You asked peoples opinions, most people have said Scottie is a ludicrous name for a girl, yet you are saying 'no it's not, but but but, what about what about?!'

Most people think your Scottie for a girls name is awful. Just accept it and stop doubling down! You're making yourself look silly.

Scottie will never be a girls name.

But if a girl gets called Scottie then it’ll be a girls name lol I’ve heard of a girl called Rory (full name not shortened for anything) which is traditionally a boys name, I know a guy called Vicky although I have assumed his name is victor but I don’t know that. I also know of a guy called Kim.

You seem oddly upset that I’m discussing names on a baby names forum. Maybe I should stick to the name nerds subreddit

I’ve never heard of anyone with that name, makes me think of Star Trek more than the dog breed. But I just googled it and apparently it is quite trendy and was one of the fastest rising names in 2023 and 2024, so I expect we might start seeing them in classrooms in a few years.

FYI I am not pregnant or planning to get pregnant either and just find name trends interesting. Don’t know why people are getting upset with you for asking.
