Thoughts on this as a girls name?

Scottie - for a girl.. I’m curious as to what the responses would be on this name today, as I just read a thread from 2018 where this name got slated, and I was quite surprised so it got me wondering it people would have the same reactions to it today..

the thread I read had the majority of the commenters saying it was an awful girls name, it was ridiculous, it was a boys name, she would get made fun of, the poster should think about her child, she’d be called a dog etc etc but I think compared to a lot of names we hear nowadays.. Scottie sounds kind of normal!? What do you think? Is it still a crazy name?

You seem oddly upset that I’m discussing names on a baby names forum. Maybe I should stick to the name nerds subreddit

Giving an opinion that Scottie is a daft and ludicrous name for a girl when someone asks on a baby names forum, and continuing to take part in the discussion = oddly upset?!

Errr, no. Not even slightly.

Are you trying to shut me down by making out I'm being OTT and a bit hysterical or something? Nice bit of thinly veiled misogynism there. Hmm

Scottie will never be a girls name.

until someone gives birth to a girl, and calls her Scottie.

who knows, might have already happened.

Well, let's just call a girl Percy or Trevor or Norman or Nigel then shall we?

I mean why not eh?

You seem a bit annoyed that some posters think Scottie is a boys name. (And would be daft for a girl...) Are you a woman, and Scottie is your name? Or do you have a name that is traditionally given to a boy? I am just sensing that you're projecting a bit.

I was giving it as an example for a girl’s name. Yes, names do end up being co-opted to the other gender but I was saying that it isn’t a diminutive of a girl’s name (and I’ve mentioned in my other answer to you why I was saying this at all). I think of those things as separate phenomena I suppose.

ETA: I agree it can become a girl’s name, of course - if any girls anywhere are already called it then it is a girl’s name. Anything can be a name, as per Gwyneth Paltrow calling her child Apple, which was deemed very odd at the time. I was just making a different point.

Edited

Yes totally get you and what you’re saying! Thanks for responding respectfully! I actually think Apple is a ridiculous name, although I don’t really know why.. and I wouldn’t say that to someone who was called Apple obviously lol

Boys' names can become girls' names over time. Evelyn, Hilary, Lindsay 🙂

Hopefully not Nigel, though.

I mean, they’d probably go down the Norma or Nigella route if they liked those names, wouldn’t they? Just like Scottie, instead of Scott.

I’ll never understand why people get so het up about other people’s name choices. Some people like to look a little further than the top 20 used names of the last 5 years.

Commonly used names aren’t to my taste, but I still wouldn’t get as frothy as some do on here about it.

I’m not annoyed at all that people think it’s a boys names. I just think comments on here are bizarre at times. Labelling names ugly, ridiculous etc.

No. I said you seem oddly upset because you’ve gone from discussing a name to making personal comments about me. Disliking Scottie is an opinion. Telling me I’m “making myself look silly” isn’t. You also keep shifting the focus from the name, to why I’m posting, to my motives, and now to accusations of misogyny. If anyone’s trying to shut down discussion, it’s the person insisting I should “just accept it” and stop asking questions.

Het up? No-one is getting 'het up' dear. (Telling women they are 'het up' and to calm down! More misogynism!) Hmm You'll be accusing me of being too 'invested' next. 🙄

It's a discussion forum and the OP asked for opinions on calling a GIRL Scottie! People have given opinions. No-one is 'het up.' As I said, you do seem to be projecting though...

If you want to do that, call your daughter Scottie, then crack on @fairydustt Seems like you have made up your mind. Baffling why you started the thread really.....

I agree with this (although I’m a hypocrite because I just said Apple was a ridiculous name) but anyway, it’s interesting that Robert is a boys name, but add an a onto it and it becomes a girls name. Same with Frank being a boys name until you add ie to it.. so why is adding ie to Scott and making it a girls name so ridiculous? There’s no consistency… and that doesn’t mean everyone has to go oh yes Scottie is a lovely name, I personally don’t like the name Roberta, but I’m not gonna say it’s a boys name.. because it’s not

Lins77 · 09/07/2026 22:11

There's definitely a trend, particularly in the US, for "boys'" names or surnames being used for girls. As mentioned, Hunter, Parker, also Blake, Cameron, Dylan, etc. Not so much here as yet, I don't think, although "Charlie" seems to have caught on recently.

Why would I be projecting? My name is not Scottie.

is it misogyny if I also tell my (male) partner that they are ‘het up’ about something?

I just think that you can give opinions without being rude, and calling names ugly and ridiculous is rude.

there should be a rule where people should share their beautiful, non ridiculous names when making such strong views known. Might humble them a bit.

PinkHibiscusFlowers · 09/07/2026 22:15

Nothing has changed since 2018…. It’s still awful 🥴

ThunderFog · 09/07/2026 23:41

I'm sure I have seen Scoth as a name meaning blossom. I can't find any trace so I may be hallucinating.
It is funny what words seem okay as names. Flowers and trees yes, fruits and vegetables no.
What seems masculine or feminine: Roman, Scot = m; Florence, Alba = f.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 10/07/2026 00:01

I just immediately think of Scottie dog… you can’t do that to a child!

Scottie where I come from is a dog or at best a lad on a Modern Apprenticeship with a joiner.

I work with a lot of teenage girls. This kind of name gets changed. It's hard to define it, but the "Scottie dog" association plus the complete lack of precedent for its use as a girl's name. What is it you like about the name?

There is precedence for it's use for girls, although not much. There are a handful of them in the Scottish records in the 18th century, mostly girls and only a couple of boys. Then nothing till the last 20 years, where there have been one of two most years, but has started to increase in the last 3 (although still in single figures). There have been five this year already, so despite all the mocking on here, it seems to be catching on, in Scotland at least!

It’s a name that’s trending for girls in America for some reason. Scottie was the #126 most popular name for baby girls born in the US in 2025. I predict that the trend will make its way across the pond soon (unfortunately).
