Thoughts on this as a girls name?

Scottie - for a girl.. I’m curious as to what the responses would be on this name today, as I just read a thread from 2018 where this name got slated, and I was quite surprised so it got me wondering it people would have the same reactions to it today..

the thread I read had the majority of the commenters saying it was an awful girls name, it was ridiculous, it was a boys name, she would get made fun of, the poster should think about her child, she’d be called a dog etc etc but I think compared to a lot of names we hear nowadays.. Scottie sounds kind of normal!? What do you think? Is it still a crazy name?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I don’t like it. You’ll also get a lot of people pronounce it with the T

How else would you pronounce it?

PMSL, of course you can't call a girl Scottie! Good grief! 😂

I sometimes think posters come on here and try and come up with the most hilariously batshit names they can think of that NO-ONE would ever call their child.

AIBU to call my child 'Fartytrumpington?' It has a nice ring to it no?

Surely you could say the same about names like Poppy (which is the 7th most popular name in the UK currently) and Daisy (which is 18th). Poppy wasn’t a common name before the 90s, I imagine plenty of people probably thought that’s a cute name for a 3 year old but not a 43 year old.

I had a book written in Edwardian times where one of the characters was called Poppy (The Doctors Daughter, I would love to read it again but there are no copies to be had!)
I wouldn't like to be called Scottie, which is the measure I use to judge names.

Yeah, because that’s comparable 🙄

I work with a lot of teenage girls. This kind of name gets changed. It's hard to define it, but the "Scottie dog" association plus the complete lack of precedent for its use as a girl's name. What is it you like about the name?

I do get the dog association, also I’m not even pregnant, I just stumbled across an old thread and I thought it was a nice name and was surprised at the responses, given we now have names like Sunday, wolf, willow, Addison etc. I think some plus sides to the name Scottie would be that it is unique but not so crazy that you’d have to always explain it or spell your name out or tell people how to pronounce it, I think it sounds friendly, warm and approachable, although the Scottie dog reference is the only thing that would put me off using the name (and the fact that everyone thinks it’s a ridiculous name lol but I still don’t really get why! We have names like Robin, Willow, Wren etc)

That’s fair enough, I would hate to be called Poppy

Jeezo - don’t.

Growlybear83 · 09/07/2026 18:31

It’s really cruel to saddle a child with a name like that.

Yeah, I wouldn't be that keen either to be fair. Wouldn't mind Daisy though.
Poppy in the book, actually The Doctors Children I think not Daughter, was very beautiful with black curly hair, so I have good associations with the name! Although I seem to remember she got consumption or similar as these Victorian children were wont to do.

Hmm I would hate to be called daisy too, I think maybe I’m not super in love with very girly names, although I do love the names Penelope and Grace!

It’s awful. I also dislike Poppy, Daisy, Lily etc

RogueFemale · 09/07/2026 18:37

@fairydustt Have you considered Westie?

bitmiffed26 · 09/07/2026 18:38

Those of you that hate it….do you feel the same way about ‘Stevie’ ?

HugoThatway · 09/07/2026 18:42

@KilkennyCats , Some British accents have glottal stops.
Glottal stop - Wikipedia
It would sound like Scoh-y.

I think it's a great idea, @fairydustt . IIRC your surname it Stock and it's great alliteration.
With that surname you might want to also consider Tavi (short for Octavia or Octavian) or Woody, too or go the full monty and call her Hylanda.

Maybeitllneverhappen · 09/07/2026 18:58

I think it's a nickname for someone whose surname is Scott. 🤷‍♀️

My surname isn’t stock.. I’m confused

I quite like it, now I think about it. See also Scotia, and Scout.

SpottyAlpaca · 09/07/2026 19:04

The current world number 1 golfer is an Amercan guy called Scottie Sheffler. He’s a sportsman, not a celebrity, which means he’s not yet massively famous outside of golf, but it’s worth being aware that the world’s best known Scottie is a bloke.

lockdownlady871 · 09/07/2026 19:04

And I think his name is actually Scott.

Love so much. As in F Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald's daughter. Has the same vibe as Scout but it's a nicer sound.

Edited

Exactly. It's very very cool to anyone who gets it.

TofuTheCat · 09/07/2026 19:29

No. Just no. Scott was never great for a boy, why inflict it on a girl? Very few Scott’s I have known appreciated being called Scotty, so why make a twee nickname a girls name. Give her a fighting chance at least!

imagine growing up with that name and trying to have a serious career 🤦🏻‍♀️
