What are your kid's names shortened to?

Just thinking after reading - is Peter a boring name thread - how I would hate the DCs to have names that sounded awful shortened - Dave, Phil, Pete etc.

What are your kids names shortened to and do any of you get pissed that they are shortened at all - DS has a really weird long name that is shortened - as we call him the shortened version - not his Sunday name- DD's is never really shortened - some call her Hetty (which she hates) or H but never anything which I find really horrid!

Well I'm sorry you find the name I gave ds 'awful' but there you go. Different strokes and all that.

Twinkie1 · 10/04/2008 11:17

Yep different strokes and all that!

My DD gets shortened to Lea (and the shortening has become habitual by all and sundry now). Now I NEVER thought I'd name a girl Lee, Leigh etc, but spelling it Lea doesn't seem so bad. Does that make any sense?

Mine get shortened all the time and it doesn't bother me a jot. Wait until yours are teenagers and they all call each other 'wanker' or some such name.

Not worth worrying about. Their names, up to them what they do with 'em.

southeastastra · 10/04/2008 11:20

lol moon! my ds(14)'s friends call him by his surname.

ranting · 10/04/2008 11:21

Oh yes, you wait, you've got emoslut and the likes to contend with, you'll be begging for Hetty then!

HonorMatopoeia · 10/04/2008 11:22

Mine get shortened to Elle and Roo (!) but it's quite cute at their ages (3 and 6mnths) and they have their Posh names to use later in life.

eandh · 10/04/2008 11:23

DD1 is Ellie only me and DH who shorten it and we call her Ells

DD2 is Hattie and tends to be called Hats or Toots (not sure where that came from???)

My name is Michelle I refuse to answer people who shorten it as hate Chelle, shelly etc

Dh is Christopher but everyone calls him Chris or Parksy

Mamazon · 10/04/2008 11:25

DS is George so doesn't get shortened at all.

DD is Eleanor and people do call her ellie which irritates me. her name isn;t ellie (nothing wrong with the name, i quite like it) her name is Eleanor, not Ellie. had i wanted her to be called Ellie i would have used that.

irrationaly

Mamazon · 10/04/2008 11:26

Im a michelle too.
Im not MEEshell. im certainly not a "meesh"

i dont mind chelle so much but i really will not answer to MEESh. grrr

themoon66 · 10/04/2008 11:27

SEA.. yes, I've noticed that teenagers tend to go by surnames too. Weird lot.

Solitaire · 10/04/2008 11:27

I must admit that my pet names for my DSs are Jimbo and Tomtom. They don't mind yet but older DS did correct a school mate who started calling him Jimmy and told him he did't like it. Fair play. I personally don't mind if they shorten their names as I shorten my name, (much to my Mums disgust)

numptysmummy · 10/04/2008 11:28

My kids names all seem to get lengthened - we end up using their middle names as well. Thank god we haven't got any weird family second names we had to use!

eandh · 10/04/2008 11:29

Mamazon - its so annoying isnt it! I was one of 3 Michelle's in my class at school and teacher kept trying to use different variations of it for each of us, unfortunately none of us wanted our names shortened

Beauregard · 10/04/2008 11:29

My dd's names cannot be shortened .

Solitaire · 10/04/2008 11:31

DS2 has 3 Toms in his class so even at home he addresses himself as Tom D cos that what he is at school.
My mum called me Rebecca so it wouldn't be shortened! I don't know, some sort of post natal mad thinking

HonorMatopoeia · 10/04/2008 11:32

hi Pelvic , no it wouldn't work with yours would it

ranting · 10/04/2008 11:32

Well ds does call himself by the shortened version of his name but, as it's his name he can call himself what he likes (as long as it's not crap bag). Dd has a four letter name so most people don't bother trying to shorten it, although she does have a friend who keeps calling her Annie and she hates it. We just (bizarrely enough) call her lou.

Beauregard · 10/04/2008 11:36

Hi Honor

PinkTulips · 10/04/2008 11:36

dd calls ds 'coogi' coz she can't pronounce caleb and it's sorta rubbing off on the rest of us

Anna8888 · 10/04/2008 11:41

Alexandre - Alex
Guillaume - Gui
Flora - nothing, I had to be very fierce about "Florinette" and other - worse - fraternal endearments

hannahsaunt · 10/04/2008 11:52

We endeavoured to choose names that couldn't be shortened and managed with ds1 but failed with ds2 & 3. However, their names have shortenings which would be (just about) acceptable. We use their proper names all the time and gently discourage others from shortening (although ds2 is doing that job himself now and much more fiercely than we've ever done).

Alishanty · 10/04/2008 11:55

Ds is called Solomon but it is often shortened to Solly or Sol. Don't mind as we planned to have that option and let him choose when he's old enough. Sd is called Amber and that sometimes gets shortened to Ambs.

MrsRecycle · 10/04/2008 11:59

We deliberately chose names that couldn't be shortened and, guess what, they get lengthened - so you can't win eh?

ranting · 10/04/2008 12:00

My own name can be shortened twice, so my family just refer to me as the short, short version, which is male anyway.
