What are your kid's names shortened to?

Just thinking after reading - is Peter a boring name thread - how I would hate the DCs to have names that sounded awful shortened - Dave, Phil, Pete etc.

What are your kids names shortened to and do any of you get pissed that they are shortened at all - DS has a really weird long name that is shortened - as we call him the shortened version - not his Sunday name- DD's is never really shortened - some call her Hetty (which she hates) or H but never anything which I find really horrid!

My son Jaeden we call Jae but actually that is his real name He wanted his name changed to jaeden so we did by deed poll. I still call him Jae. the only other with a short version is Baylee we sometimes call her B. Paris & Ebony you cant really shorten.

Mine don't get shortened.

Few of my DD's friends - including Michaels, Christophers, Peters, & a Matthew - are shortened.

iwouldgoouttonight · 10/04/2008 21:34

My DS's name only has one syllable so everyone adds 'ie' on the end which used to annoy me but now he calls it himself and I think it suits him.

DontCallMeBaby · 10/04/2008 21:35

I'm resigned to DD's name being shortened, her friend's mum really doesn't like HER DD's name being shortened. So I'm the one giggling and she's the one frowning when they greet each other: "Nat!!" "Soph!!" I blame nursery.

Dd's gets shortened to George, she's Georgia. Ds' is called Harry, and gets called Has or H (although i don't like haitch)

My dh gets called by his surname or skin to do with an op he had boys eh? weirdos

My name can be shortened, Nicola, i'm not keen on Nicky, but nic's fine. Nicky for other people is greta but i'm not a nicky DH calls me Eddas or Cheddas though hence my mn name That came from my maiden name. eanh mention the teachers shortening names(we went to school together) and that same teacher kept calling my nicky and my friend sitting next to me Kathy(Katherine) we were not impressed

Boys are very strange in calling each other by surnames

Shortenings are fine but I don't like people assuming they may shorten names. DH's family called me nicky from day one and i had to ask dh to tell them not too

Eddas · 10/04/2008 21:48

that was a lengthy answer

jingleyjen · 10/04/2008 21:51

DS's names are not currently shortened but am totally aware that by the time they are at the cricket/rugby club they will be.

Neney1 · 10/04/2008 22:02

Oliver - Olivani(?) Think it was an attempt at a dodgy italian accent which stuck.

But for the most part, plain old Ollie.

Hulababy · 10/04/2008 22:05

I never thought DD's name would be shortened - but it is. Once she got to be about 4y and at nursery and then school Mollie got shortened to Moll. Not all the time, but a significant number of times. DD is used to it now. I have even found myself saying it before now, and I don;t even lik the shortened nickname!

gigglewitch · 10/04/2008 22:09

haven't read all the posts (sorry) but my kids names tend to get lengthened and they're all 5 or aix letter / two / three syllable ones
what's that all about?

hippipotami · 10/04/2008 22:10

Oliver gets shortened to good old Ollie. (which is not my favourite but even I call him it sometimes)
Emily gets shortened to Ems by me, dh and ds, but Em by her best friend.

RustyBear · 10/04/2008 22:20

DS is Matthew, & gets called Matt, which I like.
DD is Amber, which I thought couldn't be shortened, but she gets called Bambi. She has a friend Mike Rack who gets called Crack but she also has friends called Pie and Satch, which bear no resemblance to any part of their names.

Oh, and DS has a friend whose surname is Walsh-Atkins - known to one and all (including himself) as Shat.

IdrisTheDragon · 10/04/2008 22:25

DS is Benjamin. He quite often gets called Ben. I am used to it now, but I still don't understand why people do just shorten names when they aren't known by that name.

I randomly call him Bob sometimes - started at Benja-bob and turns into Bob.

DD is Alice and doesn't seem to get called anything other than Alice.

sussies · 10/04/2008 22:44

My niece is 2 and SHE decided last week that she wants to change her name to Ez! tis ok a lot better than dd who at 2 wanted to be called Marjorie.

sussies · 10/04/2008 22:49

4kids dd's best friend is called Paris, she gets called Paz.

fortyplus · 11/04/2008 00:06

ds1 came home from school complaining that some of his friends had started calling him 'Brannigan Trout'

fortyplus · 11/04/2008 00:07

Hasten to add that it's not a shortened version of his real name!

unknownrebelbang · 11/04/2008 01:12

DS1's name is never shortened by me or DH, although is by other people, and is on this thread.

DS2's name was shortened from the day he was born, and although I stick to the one shortened form, he himself has been known to use all sorts of variations.

DS3 has a mix of both his proper name, and the shortened form.

All three boys are referred to by their surnameyyy.

My name is a shortened version of a proper name, with a slighty different spelling, so everyone spells it wrong and/or assumes it's short for the proper name.

unknownrebelbang · 11/04/2008 01:12

Idris, DH is a Bob (to colleagues) but some friends call him Ben.

His father is the only person I know who calls him Robert (I call him Rob.)

amytheearwaxbanisher · 11/04/2008 01:25

Desiderata · 11/04/2008 01:34

I call mine Benito, which is short for Mussolini.

anitaj1982 · 11/04/2008 03:02

all our names got shortened, DH FROM AMOS TO AMY, ME FROM NATALIE TO NAT AND DD AMELIE TO LILY, LEE, LILIA THE LIST GOES ON, SUITS HER THOUGH, AND DONT THINK CAN STOP CALLING DH AMY, LOL

ninedragons · 11/04/2008 03:52

We picked a name that couldn't be shortened. I'm Australian and my compatriots are absolutely dreadful about shortening every name they come across. You would think there was a tax on long words.
