What are your kid's names shortened to?

Just thinking after reading - is Peter a boring name thread - how I would hate the DCs to have names that sounded awful shortened - Dave, Phil, Pete etc.

What are your kids names shortened to and do any of you get pissed that they are shortened at all - DS has a really weird long name that is shortened - as we call him the shortened version - not his Sunday name- DD's is never really shortened - some call her Hetty (which she hates) or H but never anything which I find really horrid!

We call our Thomas Tomtom at home. V funny when he decides in the car that he is a sat nav system and gives directions. Have learnt not to follow them

BexieID · 11/04/2008 12:19

We call our Thomas, TomTom as well. Or T-man, lol. Tom was known as Jaffa cake when I was pregnant and my friends down south still call him that!

When we were little, my brother called me Ha-Ha because he couldn't say Rebecca!

Something that needs updating, but a little site I did for him here.

DS1 James (Jimbo, JamieJames, Jimbob Mick - middle names Michael) was called San Miguel in the womb as he was conceived in Spain after a few beers!

squeaver · 11/04/2008 12:23

Bexie - question for you, pls. Were you called Rebecca at school and Beckie at home? Not sure what to do for my lo when she starts school. I call her both. All her friends call her Beckie. She calls herself Beckie. Feel like it should be Rebecca for school - her "proper" name

Solitaire · 11/04/2008 12:26

Oh Bexie, he's cute!
My TomTom is an 8 year old with a great sense of humour

Solitaire · 11/04/2008 12:29

If she addresses herself as Beckie then continue with it. Everyone at work calls me Beckie and always has done.
For me it was the other way round, I was (and still am) Beckie to everyone except my parents from approx 12 years old on.

squeaver · 11/04/2008 12:31

Thanks Solitaire. I usually use Rebecca for telling-off so thought it might instill some authority from the start

BexieID · 11/04/2008 12:32

My grandparents always call me Rebecca. My parents called me Rebecca when I was naughty. I didn't get called Beckie at school until year 10, when some friends and teachers just started using Beckie instead. At work, I've always been known as Beckie and I always introduce myself as Beckie.

FIL is James Michael, and everyone calls him Mick.

Solitaire · 11/04/2008 12:33

As you can see from earlier posts the name Rebecca fills me with fear of childhood naughtiness

BexieID · 11/04/2008 12:35

I love the name Rebecca. If it wasn't my name, I would love to call a daughter it! Also goes nicely with DFs surname.

Solitaire · 11/04/2008 12:37

If you believe the Pub Landlord (AL Murray) it means parents with ideas above their station.
DH nearly wet himself laughing at that

squeaver · 11/04/2008 12:38

I love it too (obviously!). We didn't intend to shorten it, it just sort of happened. My mum's a bit sniffy about Beckie for some reason - always calls her Rebecca.

Your wee boy's lovely by the way.

bogie · 11/04/2008 12:42

My ds gets his name shortend by loads of different people (mostly dp's friends)
He is called Justin sil calls him juju dp's mates call him JD, JP, Denno jr and other stupid things

bogie · 11/04/2008 12:43

oh and even though he is only 2 he corrects everyone and say's IM JUSTIN

FAQ · 11/04/2008 12:52

DS1 is Tafara, but shortened to Taf or Taffy (he prefers Taffy at the moment)

DS2 is Tongai, not really shortened to anything, but H used to call him Tony sometimes as it's the Shona version of Tony (but I hate the name tony with a passion so I never use it)

DS3 is Takunda, known by almost everyone as "TK", infact I'm not sure he'll ever be known as Takunda at all lol.

themoon66 · 11/04/2008 12:59

Char and Lol = Charlotte and Lawrence.

DD also gets called Filou by her mates for reasons known only to them.

Ellbell · 11/04/2008 13:02

becaroo · 11/04/2008 18:25

Oh, yes, we call him tom tom too!

My name is Rebecca but I am only EVER called it when I am in trouble!!

Everyone knows me as Bec or Becca. (sorry, loathe Becky for some reason)

Feelingbetterslowly · 11/04/2008 18:28

Does anyone ever get told off for shortening their dc's names? I have been by a friend of the family every time I did it and was most affronted! She is called Hannah so gets Hanny ( a lot-loads of people think she is called honey ), Han, H, Hanban (was Hannybanny as a toddler) and Hannah, alongside Lottie (someone thought she was called Lottie and her friend's dog was called Hannah, for TWO YEARS! I didn't have the heart to correct her-I still called Hannah by her name in front of said lady every time though-she was so embarrassed when she finally said "why do you call her Hannah all the time"!)

shaqpe · 11/04/2008 22:07

We call DS
Tyler Jayjay, Ty, TJ, booboo, Tyler Booboo
