Fiachra - thoughts?

I'm Irish and live in Ireland.

I found out I am having a boy 🤗I already have a Pádraig, we are looking for something else Irish, and preferably not super popular. I've posted before, I have a massive family so a lot of names have been used already

What are thoughts on Fiachra? Non Irish people, would you have any idea how to say it?

I'm not Irish and I don't live in Ireland . I wouldn't know how to say it but I'm not sure that's relevant as you are naming your child for the life that they will be leading. If I was to meet someone with this name, they would (presumably) tell me how it's pronounced so I would then be aware . Like I am with names from people of various other backgrounds I come into contact with.

This is far too sensible a mindset for an Irish baby names thread.

I'm English and I don't know how to pronounce it. But I'd learn if you told me how to pronounce it so I'm not sure how much it matters!

I was thinking about this thread earlier, it’s like some posters on baby name threads try to free-associate to see how many unpleasant connotations they can come up with, no matter how far-fetched. I was thinking what they might do with common English names if they were unfamiliar… Simon (sounds a bit like semen, or else “sigh, man”), Peter (starts with Pee! He’ll get teased so badly!) and let’s not even go there with Lucy.

YES! We should potter onto the English baby name threads with comments of "Charlotte sounds like harlot, are you giving birth to a sex worker?" and "Kit sounds like spit, why do you hate your baby?".

Irish also and love the name Fiachra! Considered it for DS but unfortunately in our area it’s always shortened to Fakey which I don’t understand as it mutilates a beautiful name!

However we have a beautiful baby girl instead and we choose Éala for her name, I also have an Irish name and yes I’ve been asked how to pronounce/spell it a million times but it doesn’t annoy me at all and I like having an Irish name so wanted the same for my kids.

DH isn't too sold on Fiachra.

We are now thinking back to Ruairí or Donnacha

I like both of them and for what it's worth I've minded 2 Ruarí's over the years & no one ever called them Rory. (I know you mentioned that in a previous post)

Never seen either of these.

In my head they are:

Roo-Airy. And Don-Akk-Uh

i quite like the name Conlith. Have a lovely Irish friend called that.

This has been an interesting thread, and I wouldn't let pronunciation-challenged English people stop you from giving your Irish baby the Irish name of your choice.

@Brexile I am not put off at all, I knew an Irish name thread would mostly attract Irish people. But threw in that question in case anyone not Irish wanted to put in their thoughts. DS is called Pádraig, so we will be going with an Irish name. They can always amend their names if they wanted but if he goes to live in say Germany I'm sure they'd make a stab at it.

Donncha is very popular in Cork and Kerry. Sometimes softened to Donough / Donagh. Also Dónal / Domhnall quite common here. Breffni has become popular especially among O Rourkes. It is the old petty kingdom which is now basically County Leitrim. Oran is an unusual name. Seems to be confined to mid Cork.

Breffni where I am would mean you're a big Cavan fan! I do know a lad in his 30s called that.

We have an Odhran in the family. Great name.

Naming a person is hard!

@Octocat honestly have always seen the "Harlot" in Charlotte 😂 but never Viagra in Fiachra and I was in the same class as one in Dublin.

Breffni used to span a huge area Sligo to louth, and into Meath at one stage. Also of importance to Reilly/ UI Reilly's

Tiernan is another nice name from those families I think ?

@Abhannmor I like Tiernan, there is a little Tierna in DSs creche. But DH veto'd it because he knows one and does not like him.

We both like Shay, but I like it short of Seamus, DH for Shane

Shay for Seamus is so lovely. I also love Ruairi and Donnacha.

what about Mícheál, Cillian, Cormac, Eoin, Conal, Declan

I know someone who has a little Séimí. An alternative to Shay. They live in the Gaeltacht so no issues with spelling, pronunciation.

I would never choose a name I did not know how to pronounce!!
