Fiachra - thoughts?

I'm Irish and live in Ireland.

I found out I am having a boy 🤗I already have a Pádraig, we are looking for something else Irish, and preferably not super popular. I've posted before, I have a massive family so a lot of names have been used already

What are thoughts on Fiachra? Non Irish people, would you have any idea how to say it?

There was a Trans murderer on 'Lewis' many years ago with that name.
She changed her name to Felicity and proceeded to attempt to murder Hathaway but with no success. 😦

Poor effort from Fiachra/Felicity. Hathaway is such a sullen pain in the arse!

TextureSeeker · 09/04/2024 11:56

Isn't Fiachra one of those names that is always used when people mock the D4, private school types with that accent. That's what comes to mind when I hear the name anyway.

SoupDragon · 09/04/2024 11:57

Not a clue!

edit: it's Fia-cra so said fairly how it's spelt

that was the pronunciation I ruled out 😂😂

LenaLamont · 09/04/2024 11:59

I’d think it rhymes with Niagara or Viagra.

pontipinemum · 09/04/2024 12:02

@SoupDragon to be fair, ruling out the obvious pronunciation is usually the correct course of action with Irish names!

@TextureSeeker god we're so far from D4s, we're complete culchies who live on a farm.

😂absolutely never made the viagra comparison.

Am I the only Irish person who associates the name with Fiachra frog from Bosco? I wouldn’t use any name that ends in “a” for a boy, it sounds too feminine.

pontipinemum · 09/04/2024 12:08

@Berlinlover I do know who Bosco is but I was a child in the 90s he wasn't on (as much!) I don't remember the frog.

I like it,I'm.irish too. Never thought of the viagra reference until now 🫣

Cillian and Oisin are very popular with us. So much my 2 year old has 3 friends called Oisin - he nearly was Oisin too !

I'm a child of the 80, have surely watched 87% of all episodes of Bosco, and have no memory of a frog called Fiachra! Shock

MolkosTeenageAngst · 09/04/2024 12:18

I would have assumed it was a girls name just from reading it, wouldn’t have known how to pronounce it but would have guessed at Fee-ach-ra.

Antibetty · 09/04/2024 12:18

I love it and wouldn't have even thought of pronouncing it any other way. I am Scottish though, and I would say a soft "ch" rather than a hard "c"

Any memory of Gregory Grainneog, Charlie Crann or Susie Snail?

I remember Gregory! And I remember the tongue twister couple whose necks would extend and then twist back down(?). But I'm drawing blanks for the others. Maybe they passed me by as I was in a state of high excitement waiting for the knock on the magic door.

DrJoanAllenby · 09/04/2024 12:30

I'm not Irish and it sounds like a name of a car.

zurg123 · 09/04/2024 12:52

I know a few Fiachra's. Tbh it's not my fav boys name. I think it sounds quite clunky. What about Fionnan (fada) on the a.

Octocat · 09/04/2024 13:02

It's one of my favourite Irish names, I love it.

pontipinemum · 09/04/2024 13:47

@Hopingtobe4 I really like Oisín but there are a a few in the creche/ play group we go to

Fiachra seems to be getting split opinions. We had a very positive yes when I asked on here about Pádraig

Absolutely fine if you live in Ireland, its a great name. If he moves abroad, he’ll be a grown-up and he’ll deal with it.

It does not make me think of Viagra or Fiacla 🤣

Gensola · 09/04/2024 14:21

I’m Irish and have always heard it Fee-och-ra

GoodVibesHere · 09/04/2024 14:24

I've never come across it, and wouldn't know how to pronounce it but Viagra would definately be my first thought. Seems an odd choice of name given that it sounds or looks so similar to a libido medication.

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 09/04/2024 14:37

well the name pre-dates the medication by just a year or two. and it isn't pronounced anything like viagra...

Susie snail???
What happened to Síle Seilide (Sheila Snail in English)?

SunnyFog · 09/04/2024 14:55

It's a great name.
I guess Fiach would be a possibility to get away from the Viagra connection.
However, there are so many girls called Fiadh.
Fraoch or Faolán b'fheidir?

TwirlBar · 09/04/2024 14:58

I would never have thought of viagra, but Fiachna is a similar name if you're worried about it.

Abhannmor · 09/04/2024 15:02

Its easy enough. Fiakra. Becoming a bit more popular lately. Nice name.
