Fiachra - thoughts?

I'm Irish and live in Ireland.

I found out I am having a boy 🤗I already have a Pádraig, we are looking for something else Irish, and preferably not super popular. I've posted before, I have a massive family so a lot of names have been used already

What are thoughts on Fiachra? Non Irish people, would you have any idea how to say it?

I love Mathghamhain but for some reason DH would not have it on the list. 😂

Abhannmor · 23/04/2024 15:29

Pronounced something like Mahon?

And meaning "bearcub".
Obviously Math meaning "bear" is more suitable for an grown up.

pontipinemum · 23/04/2024 16:35

@SunnyFog wow that's quite the name! I don't think I'll be going with it

I know a Maitiú. But I can see the thread has moved on. Grin

pontipinemum · 23/04/2024 17:04

@Octocat I hope I don't end of boring the shite out of ye all. I'm only 24 weeks and WFH so no where to air my random name thoughts during the day. I could switch many times

Always thought Art meant a bear? Maybe that's Welsh.

Oscar - deer friend , also spelt Osgur but I don't care for that version.

Art also means bear.
Scary predators have lots of names.

I'm back :)

Fintan is the one knocking about in there today. DH veto'd Finbar.

DH was talking about someone he knows called Faylie but my guess is that is Faolan?

OP posts:
GeorgesMarvelousCalpol · 01/05/2024 17:13

I like Fintan, better than Finbar for me. The only Finbar I know goes by Barry (although I always thought Barry was a name in its own right).

Faylie?? 🤔 any chance that's Féilim?

pontipinemum · 01/05/2024 17:16

@GeorgesMarvelousCalpol could be, we have a Feilim in the family we don't really shorten his name. Maybe Fay fay when he was small. He's a teen now so don't

So this week I'm thinking Séamus I think I did mention it before. I have always liked it but was put off by an old gran uncle with the same name dying last year. My aunt (my age) said people wouldn't think I was naming the baby after him.

I like Séamus, Shay for short, maybe Shayme to me/ DH. She said that the last two baby boys she knows were called Shay so I recon that's going to be popular.

35 baby Séamus's last year. 109 Shay's but 152 in 2022

Pádraig and Séamus sound good together - although that hasn't been one of my thinking factors.

Hopingtobe4 · 13/05/2024 11:08

I think Shay,Shea and Sé are all so popular atm.

Be worth checking the 3 spellings fir popularity..in saying that I love It.

How about Ronan ? Daragh? Rossa?

harrietm87 · 13/05/2024 11:26

I like Seamus but really dislike Shay - for some reason I think of it as a rough boy name.

Have you ruled out Conn/Conall and Art? I love all of those.

If you like an S name, what about Senan?

Darkherds · 13/05/2024 11:43

Séamus is lovely, but I'm another one who doesn't like Shay. Not sure if Séamus would get shortened though. The one I know doesn't.

GeorgesMarvelousCalpol · 13/05/2024 12:04

I'm the opposite of PPs, in that I love Shay/ Sé but not particularly Séamus.
I think it gives great options for a child and an adult, and works well with Pádraig.

pontipinemum · 13/05/2024 12:45

We thought Pádraig might get shortened to Paudie, it still might he's only 1.5yrs but Séamus might not as well.

Not gone on Con names. I know Art doesn't mean artist but we are prob some of the least arty people going so wouldn't be for me.

I don't really like Senan

Rossa is nice! And I do also like Faolán.

harrietm87 · 13/05/2024 20:27

If I lived in Ireland I would have called my DS Iarla. I absolutely adore it (and Iarla O Lionaird has the voice of an angel).

Sadly I live in England and the English would totally mangle it.

Donnacha is the other one I love.
