Fiachra - thoughts?

pontipinemum · 09/04/2024 11:14

I'm Irish and live in Ireland.

I found out I am having a boy 🤗I already have a Pádraig, we are looking for something else Irish, and preferably not super popular. I've posted before, I have a massive family so a lot of names have been used already

What are thoughts on Fiachra? Non Irish people, would you have any idea how to say it?

I would never choose a name I did not know how to pronounce!!

But OP does know how to pronounce it 🤔

What a weird thing to say!

@pontipinemum you've had some great suggestions here, and on your earlier thread. Shay, or Sé, is a fab name - I would suggest going with Séamus for the longer name.

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 15/04/2024 11:39

I like Séamus/Shay/Séamie. Baby Séamie is adorbs.

I've always liked Conal. Prob due to a crush I had on one when I was about 12.

After the success of Normal People and the obsession people have with Paul Mescal and that character I wouldn't be surprised to see Connell rise in popularity. I prefer Conal though.

Orders76 · 15/04/2024 11:53

I love the name Con!

pontipinemum · 15/04/2024 12:24

@ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey I just checked the CSO it took a 'spike' to 13 in 2021, back down to 5 in 2023

I'm a big fan of Séamus, DH not so much. I did have an uncle called Séamus who died last year I'd hope people wouldn't think I was naming DS after him. He was a hard man to get along with!

I'm wondering if I've fallen into a gap in the space/time continuum, I know a female Naoise and a female Breffni.

I wonder when the UK stats are finally released if it will show Connell having taken a leap here. People really did lose the run of themselves over that young man and his silver chain.

I shouldn’t laugh at your not very dear but departed uncle Seamus. People in the town will be all ‘they must have been in the will, it’s the only explanation’. Grin

pontipinemum · 15/04/2024 15:30

@Octocat I was surprised to see Naoise is a male name. I only know one Breffni and he's a 30 ish yr old man.

@ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey they did here as well, so I'm surprised! And the GAA shorts 😂

God I wish, but you're right. More so I think in my own family they'd be like, really after that grouchy old man and I don't really want my baby compared to that. DH mentioned he liked his departed uncles name, his uncle actually was really rich (but naturally enough all went to his wife/kids) DS though would have the same 1st and 2nd name as that uncle we live in a tiny village so god only knows what'd be said!

Donnacha is lovely and is my boy name in waiting!

Well , Breffni is kind of a asexual I guess , being a place name. Naoise is very much a boys name. Character in a legend. Was it Deirdre of the Sorrows?

Nollaig is unisex too - Christmas.

TwirlBar · 15/04/2024 21:50

Yes, Deirdre and the sons of Uisneach. I know Naoise has become more unisex now but I think it's a pity.

SunnyFog · 15/04/2024 22:54

The spelling Noísiu looks more masculine but it feels like a feminine name.
the Indian name Nisha is feminine although i don't know how many people know that.

Abhannmor · 16/04/2024 08:43

Names becoming unisex is a bit conflicting. I mean I have no objection. The problem is , when a boys' name is adopted for girls parents tend to think ' I can't give him that name - he'll be bullied at school' That's another boy's name gone.

By the same token , Florence is still a popular name among McCarthys and related families. But for how long I wonder.

pontipinemum · 16/04/2024 09:48

@Abhannmor Florence for a boy?

Yeah, it's only ever boy names being adopted by girls. I can't think of any girl names that have become boys' names or unisex.

@Abhannmor Florence for a boy?

It was certainly used for men. I know a couple personally. They go by Flor or Florry. The younger of the two is in his 50s now though. I don't know if it's still used.

Florry??? I've heard that as a man's name, but he was about 80 when I was 10.... I can't see it as popular these days.

harrietm87 · 16/04/2024 10:28

Yeah my great uncle (born 1920) had a friend called Florry. But then again he also had a male friend called Mary (went by his middle name) - I think naming customs have changed a bit since then!

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 16/04/2024 10:30

I've heard of Florries but I've never met a Florry.

Aside from Flurry Knox. I'm assuming he was a Florence.
