Fiachra - thoughts?

pontipinemum · 09/04/2024 11:14

I'm Irish and live in Ireland.

I found out I am having a boy 🤗I already have a Pádraig, we are looking for something else Irish, and preferably not super popular. I've posted before, I have a massive family so a lot of names have been used already

What are thoughts on Fiachra? Non Irish people, would you have any idea how to say it?

Peadar
Mac
Mal
Cillian or Killian

Axx · 17/04/2024 08:52

I used to have a donkey called Seamus, I love that name.

Would Senan be an option?

I'm not too keen on the sound of Rory and think the other one would get that a lot.

Axx · 17/04/2024 08:53

Meant to say I like Cormac too, I think Mac would be a cool nn.

GeorgesMarvelousCalpol · 17/04/2024 09:39

Cormac is a great name, and I love the nn Mac for it 😍

I know you've stated quite a few names you can't use for various reasons, so apologies if I'm repeating some..... but here's a few other suggestions:

Donal
Declan
Lorcan
Ultan
Diarmuid
Cuan
Tomás

Please come back and let us know what you decide 🙂

Abhannmor · 17/04/2024 11:49

Fionnbarr
Enda
Caoilte
Niall
Felim

TwirlBar · 17/04/2024 14:36

I like Caoilte too @Abhannmorq, and remember Caoilte Mac Rónáin from the old stories. Does it sound a bit too much like Coillte, the forestry gang, to be usable though?

Abhannmor · 17/04/2024 15:06

I only ever knew one Caoilte. We all called him Keel - che. But I'm not 100% sure of the correct pronunciation! All his brothers had Fianna type names too. So we got a bit of practice!

Abhannmor · 17/04/2024 15:07

Ps. Rónán itself is nice = little seal.

I don't know any Caoilte, but using my pronunciation of Caoimhe I'd go with the softer Queel-ta (obviously not exactly, but it's hard to anglicise).
For the forestry service I'd pronounce it Quil-cha. I can understand someone doesn't know Irish not noticing a difference; it's subtle, but it is there.

TwirlBar · 17/04/2024 15:28

Coillte is said more like queel-te where I am @GeorgesMarvelousCalpol. The slender t doesn't have the ch sound that it does up the country. So it isn't quil-cha here. It does depend where you are though. I'm in Cork.

ememem84 · 17/04/2024 15:30

this isn't a name i've heard of, but i'd probably attempt pronunciation as Feeackra which is more than likely wrong.

pontipinemum · 17/04/2024 16:00

@GeorgesMarvelousCalpol I like Cormac. But I really appreciate everyone taking the time to post.

@Abhannmor Caoilte - I thought of the tree people too. I had the biggest crush on Ronan Keeting when I was about 6 😍boyzone before they were mad famous played in our small town hall, my 2 older sisters got to go but I was told I was too young 😭

@ememem84 no you're right :)

ooh win.

i've said this before on here, but the most unpronounceable name i've ever seen is xiaoxi. it was someone i was working with, but had never met or spoken to on the phone. so had no idea ho to say their name.

turns out its pronounced shaowshi. but i'd never have guessed that.

The Caoilte I know pronounces it this way (or his parents do, he is only 10 months old). Both his parents have Irish as their first language.

Darkherds · 18/04/2024 08:23

I think the pronunciation of Caoilte is dependent on dialect too though?
The pronunciation @GeorgesMarvelousCalpol gave is also used.

From the link below it would seem Caoilte and Coillte could be confused some places but not others.

https://www.teanglann.ie/en/fuaim/coillte

I think Cormac is lovely OP. It's one everyone knows in Ireland anyway. Very strong name imho.

I'll try again with than link to Caoilte!

Itsmychristmasdress · 18/04/2024 12:57

What about Ruadhàn.

pontipinemum · 18/04/2024 15:11

@Darkherds Cormac is a very strong name I must mention it to DH later.

@Itsmychristmasdress I like Ruadhán and I looked it up before I'd just be worried I have a flat mid-lands accent instead of Roo-awn it'd be Roo-in like ruin!

I know two brothers Caoilte (pronounced Keel Ta) and Cormac, everyone calls him Mac or Macker

pontipinemum · 23/04/2024 10:47

Myself again, I was looking at Maitiú do any of ye know any?

I think it's pronounced Ma-chew, no emphasis on the TH like there is in Mathew but very similar.

Never seen it before - it looks a bit like someone has tried to put an Irish spelling on the name Matthew, but open to correction on that.

In any case, I first read it with a H as in maith thú, meaning well done. So I wouldn't use it for that reason.

pontipinemum · 23/04/2024 11:13

@CelesteCunningham it is Matthew, my son is Pádraig which is just the Irish form of Patrick.

OP posts:
ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 23/04/2024 11:22

Pádraig is its own distinct name though. When it comes to names that sound 99% like the 'original' version I think I'd just go with that version. I know an Éimí (Amy) which I am slight eye-rolly about. I don't see the point.

pontipinemum · 23/04/2024 11:25

@ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey fair enough. I wasn't sure if it was known in some parts of the country. I would think he'd prob go thro life just being called and know and Matthew. Which is actually a very nice name I think. Bin that one so!

Yes, that's what I meant Smile

Éimí is amazing haha.
