Fiachra - thoughts?

I'm Irish and live in Ireland.

I found out I am having a boy 🤗I already have a Pádraig, we are looking for something else Irish, and preferably not super popular. I've posted before, I have a massive family so a lot of names have been used already

What are thoughts on Fiachra? Non Irish people, would you have any idea how to say it?

I wouldn’t know how to say it, but once they told me then I’d know and hopefully pronounce it correctly. Same with all other names I don’t know how to initially pronounce. I work with a lot of people who I wouldn’t immediately know how to say their name, but once shown how to say correctly, in my experience there doesn’t seem to be an issue.

I like it, but it has always reminded me of fiacla (teeth) as well.

@BrotherUrgh that's interesting, I only did Irish until 6th class and I was terrible at it! I spotted it in the Children on Lir story I was reading to my son the other day

This is exactly what I came here to say. No big deal, I wouldn't know how to pronounce it, would ask if necessary, and would learn something new!

it's not one of my faves, but it's fine.

I like it. I haven't heard it in years though I went to school with a Fiachra. It does remind me of fiacla though.

Fiach is another option.

I guessed at the pronunciation you then clarified BUT I am perhaps not the best English person to go by as I'm Scouse and we get lots of Irish names in Liverpool.

I've not heard of this one before though!

What about Ferdia?

I am Irish living abroad and have a colleague called Fiachra.

He gets called:
Fee-ACK-rah
FIGH-ah-crah
Fee-ah-cah-ah-rah

And everything in between

@TheBirdintheCave thanks, ah I'm not too concerned about his name translating well to other countries. We won't be moving him and if he decides to move as an adult and it causes issued he could always create a nn for himself.

@LadyWiddiothethird that give me Spanish/ Portuguese thoughts and I'm not sure why! Although if this child takes after my side of the family it might be appropriate. I've very pale but Spanish people talk to me in Spanish when they meet me and a lot of my family are dark. Sort of like the Seoige sisters but not as beautiful!

Lovely name, I use to be in the same class as a Fiachra. You get used to the pronunciation.

@Namerchanger1 I don't rhyme it with viagra. More like fee-ah-cra, cra as in cranberries.

Never really liked it personally but I've always heard it pronounced as 'Fake-ra'

Yes as soon as I said it as an English person with no clue how it would be pronounced in Irish I thought that reminds me of Viagra and how awful that would be.

There was a Trans murderer on 'Lewis' many years ago with that name.
She changed her name to Felicity and proceeded to attempt to murder Hathaway but with no success. 😦

I'm irish and I love it. It's my top boy name if I have another child !
