Names that were posh but aren't now...

THe jolly hockey sticks Cordelia got me thinking......

I knew, growing up, a very posh Annabel, Amelia and Beatrice.

All names that could be used by anybody these days. Imogen is another one that was ouch posh when I was about 12.

So what is posh now? Clemency? Tuppence?

there are twins in my town who go the private school called Loveday and Octavia.

The posh kids round 'ere are all called Emma and Oliver.

To me Camilla is the ultimate posh name.

I think Jemima was posh but now has wider usage outside the huntin' fishin' shootin' set.

Titus will always be posh.

Isn't the point of truly posh names is that they always remain posh?

Cordelia is a Shakespearian name, like Regan, Miranda, Portia, Hero, etc. They're fairly old so are now timeless.

Other names, like Octavia, Lucia, Julia, etc. are old as time as they are feminisations of oft-used Roman names.

I like Loveday, there a few here, hatrick - we live in Cornwall.

I've never met a common Sebastian.

I teach a lot of Isabellas, Imogens and Olivers and I'm in a comp. Haven't come across a Loveday yet though! When I was little I remember a teenage friend of the family called Harry which seemed ultra posh, but now they're all over the place.

William has never really been that posh has it???

It's a common "family" name on my dad's side of the family and has been for as far back as they've managed to trace - as they've all been as common as muck

loveday? as pronounced love-day? never even heard of that as a name!

I've met a lot of non-white and white working men called Sebastian. I think it only has this posh thing connotation here because of England and all its class stuff.

In other places, it's just a name. It's fairly commonly occurring in some Latin American nations.
