Names that were posh but aren't now...

THe jolly hockey sticks Cordelia got me thinking......

I knew, growing up, a very posh Annabel, Amelia and Beatrice.

All names that could be used by anybody these days. Imogen is another one that was ouch posh when I was about 12.

So what is posh now? Clemency? Tuppence?

My DB who is 63 is a Roderick, or Rod.

Since this thread was started, a lot of names considered posh have become mainstream - Clemency, Jemima, Sebastian, Quentin for example. Although Araminta and Roderick still sound posh to my ears.

I don't actually thank any names are posh. A person may be posh or chav (in the UK, at least ), but a name is just a collection of letters. It is up the the owner of any name to make of it what he wants!

Most names that are considered 'posh' by some are simply elegant, classic, beautiful names in my opinion .

Love the name Lucian (pronounced Loo-sian, not Looshan!)

Lots of names on here that we thought of as 'posh' are no longer so imo. I know quite a few 'normal' state school Sebastians, Quentins, Hugos, Florences, Violets and Floras!

Agree about Freakonimics - names may start off 'posh' but tend to move down the ranks as people look for new names and these eventually become mainstream.

I can't believe that we have got to 8 pages on this thread and no-one has yet mentioned freakonomics. It used to be mentioned all the time on here .

But a lot of the names I see on here, I would put down as middle class rather than posh. Names like Beatrice, Annabel, Isabella and so on I see a plenty in state schools, so would deem them more middle class than really 'posh'.

In fact, the few people I've known who were truly upper class, actually have quite normal names (like Georgina).
