Michael for a girl

DP has been set on Michael for a boy for this and our last pregnancy, however each time the baby has been a girl. I'm due shortly and we still dont have a name. I was watching Derry Girls which has Sister Michael it and I've actually started thinking I really like it for a girl. Is this just my hormones making me go mental?

@LysHastighed goggle it is her surname, it's a joke she is actually called George Michael

Hahahahaha this is peak MN. People going off topic to chat pure shit for the sake of it and being completely wrong. Speaking on something you know nothing about to try and have a dig at their ‘dynamic.’

You are incredibly bad vibes.

In defence of that pp I drew exactly the same inference until OP clarified, and having RTFT so did two other posters. OP didn't mention her sons and said that DH was 'set on' Michael for this pregnancy and the last, so as far as anyone was concerned she has (or is soon to have) two daughters and briefly considered naming this one Michael. It wasn't an unreasonable inference, even if we now know it was wrong.

oldernotwiser73 · 01/06/2023 09:35

Goodness, no!

The problem is, is that many people think they know what’s happening in the OP based on one post.

It’s one thing to say, ‘oh OP, I know this doesn’t answer your question but is DH wanting to name your child Michael regardless of sex because he really wants to have a boy?’

It’s a completely different thing to completely ignore the question, jump to a conclusion and then have the cheek to say, ‘Yeah. That sounds like a really healthy dynamic for your precious baby’ in a very snarky tone.

Yet again, people on here want to pass judgement and offer their opinion on something they know literally nothing about. That’s why I said that poster is bad vibes

Freshfoods · 01/06/2023 09:39

Another no here. Michael is a boy's name. Michelle is fine.

Thanks for the defence @LudicrouslyCapaciousBag but it's a fair cop and @ItsBritneyBitchhhh is right. I have really strong views on the inherent misogyny of girls being given boys' names but never the reverse and it was really unreasonable of me to let that colour my interpretation of the OP. I apologise @tova Flowers

That’s really quite big of you.
Much respect🫡

Michael can be a girl's name. Like Michael Steele, Michael Michele and Michael Learned to name a few famous people. The main character in the new star trek series is called Michael Burnham.

Or is you are unsure, go for the female equivalent, Michaela? I know a Michaela who's nickname was Mike.

CurlewKate · 01/06/2023 10:30

@Florissante Well, if you can think of a reason it's OK to call girls boy's names but not the other way round that isn't to do with misogyny I'd be delighted to hear it!

continentallentil · 01/06/2023 21:58

Yes, that would be an awful awful thing to do to her

Or given the fact the only reason they are calling her Michael is because her father wants a boy, think of another bloody name than Michael or Michaela. There is nothing wrong with the latter - except if it’s because you were hoping for a bit.

I think you need to read the full thread or at the very least, my subsequent comments...

Thank you @ZoyaTheDestroyer, it's rare to see an apology on mumsnet so it's genuinely appreciated.

I'm the last of a line of girls, also a girl, with a sometimes male name.I honestly have loved it, and never assumed it was misogynistic. Perhaps because they couldn't make up their minds and it was a female name before the male was chosen.

Cressie2 · 02/06/2023 20:49

Don’t…

Sealover123 · 02/06/2023 22:26

Would you like your name to be Michael? I wouldn't.

Maybe something inspired by Michael that sounds a bit more feminine:
Michelle, Mika (meeka), Mikelle (Mee-kell)
Mia, Makayla, Maquelle (mah-kell), Maria, Makea

fantasmasgoria1 · 07/06/2023 13:41

There was an actress called Michael learned who played Olivia Walton in the Walton's. Micheal Steele bassist for the bangles.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 08/06/2023 00:04

Hormones.
A lifetime of mix ups and teasing for your girl.
Michele
Michaela
Melissa
Melanie
Myla

MedievalMadness · 08/06/2023 00:31

No I'd not do it. I know a Mikhal and a Michaela. My family are Orthodox Jewish..

Mychal · 07/03/2025 22:19

Female “Michael” here (: despite all the dumb comments on here, I love my name. It made me feel like I could be treated as one of them from a psychological aspect honestly… even though I am extremely girlie. Also, one time, in the 3rd grade the teacher sat everyone boy/girl on the first day and misgendered me so I got to sit next to my friends..

Sometimes I wonder if my blind confidence is because of having a name like this - I even have people tell me, when I meet you I feel like I need to start calling other Michael’s Mike 😂 so yall can eat it

Absolutely not.

And as I think a PP has explained, nuns names aren't their actual given names.
