Michael for a girl

DP has been set on Michael for a boy for this and our last pregnancy, however each time the baby has been a girl. I'm due shortly and we still dont have a name. I was watching Derry Girls which has Sister Michael it and I've actually started thinking I really like it for a girl. Is this just my hormones making me go mental?

God no just no lol

PickledMuffin · 31/05/2023 22:10

Ah the name michael. my neighbour's husband is called michael, their son michael, their grandson called michael and their cat - yes also called michael! I thought she was winding me up when she told me her cats name but it was true! Must be confusing to know which michael someone is referring to when being called 🤪

PoxyAndIKnowIt · 31/05/2023 22:18

Whilst angels may be regarded as sexless, they are generally referred to with masculine pronouns and, indeed, in one passage in the bible I read, two angels (who went into a pub) were referred to as “the men”.

Michael is male name. (As is James, for that matter🙄)

Usernamaste · 31/05/2023 22:30

My middle name is Michael. It was hellish at school, but now I’ve made peace with it.
On balance I would say that your daughter won’t thank you for it.
People used to call me Mike, and it made me cry.
Michaela is even worse.

Flowergirls19 · 31/05/2023 23:04

Michael for a girl is not ok 🤣 made me laugh that you realised almost immediately that it wasn’t a good idea! ❤️

Copperoliverbear · 31/05/2023 23:19

Sister Michael in Derry girls, Michael is her Surname , please don't call a girl Michael, Michaela is nice x

Orders76 · 31/05/2023 23:52

Ok I'm going against the grain here but Michael is a wonderful name.
The arc angel, the warrior, it's fantastic.

If you decide you can't stick it, then Misha, Michelle and Mika are also fab.

I quite like Michel as in the Bible character, pronounced the same as Michael, but I’ve never used it because it seems like one the child would either love or absolutely hate and I try to avoid those.

I see no reason why anyone with no connection to the Catholic Church should know anything about the habits (see what I did there?) or lifestyle of nuns....

Bollocks. It’s about knowing stuff in general! Anyone with a bit of basic cultural knowledge should know this. You don’t have to practice a religion to have some basic understanding of how it works.

Judgyjudgy · 01/06/2023 02:56

No. Just no. And I'm usually reasonable with weird names. Michael is sooo masculine. What about James, Sam, Charlie, Max. Basically anything but Michael ... or David!!

So your husband really wants a son but so far his swimmers have only managed to create girls, and he now wants to give your final child a boys’ name regardless of their sex? Yeah. That sounds like a really healthy dynamic for your precious baby.

Hahahahaha this is peak MN. People going off topic to chat pure shit for the sake of it and being completely wrong. Speaking on something you know nothing about to try and have a dig at their ‘dynamic.’

You are incredibly bad vibes.

CurlewKate · 01/06/2023 04:36

I find it fascinating that a vanishingly small number of people are ever prepared to address the issue of why it's OK to call a girl a boy's name but not to call a boy a girl's name.

I am one of the vanishingly small number of people who doesn't care.

Gettingbysomehow · 01/06/2023 07:11

Don't try to be edgy at your child's expense. Imagine being Michal as an adult. Everyone think she is 'transitioning and will be confused about her pronouns.

NashvilleQueen · 01/06/2023 07:18

It would be forever with your little girl that she was a disappointment: her father wanted a boy so much that couldn’t accept that she’s a girl and even gave her boy’s name.

This is the primary reason not to do it for me.

Also in this current world of gender identity issues it would also have the potential to cause her to question things from a very early age simply by virtue of her name.

SunshineAndFizz · 01/06/2023 07:32

Give over 😂😂😂

SunnyFog · 01/06/2023 07:34

In Ireland, boys whose names include Mary would at one time had a word like Maol or Giolla meaning "disciple" or "servant". Eg
Maol Mhuire - "Mallory"
Giolla Mhuire - "Gilmore" or all kinds of variations.
John Wayne's name "Marian" is not the girls' name, but a grammatical form like "American" or "Asian".
ie the boys aren't named Mary, but dedicated to Mary the Mother of Jesus.

Oh yeah this! I'd probably be confused myslef if I met a woman called Michael

ThomasinaLivesHere · 01/06/2023 07:38

I was named Michelle after a Michael but as it was such a common name growing up I wish they’d chosen Michaela as it’s a nice name and never been common. Though I’d choose Michelle over Michael for a girl. So if you like the sound of Michael there are options for girls. Like others say with issues around gender and identity I think it’s important not to cause potential issues for your child.

CurlewKate · 01/06/2023 08:08

@Florissante "I am one of the vanishingly small number of people who doesn't care."

Fair enough. Personally, I think misogyny should always be called out.

Florissante · 01/06/2023 08:15

It's hardly misogyny.

mdh2020 · 01/06/2023 08:54

Or the French version - Michelle

That's not going against the grain because no one is saying Michael is a bad name - it's not; they're saying it's not a name for a girl.

Sister Michael in Derry girls, Michael is her Surname , please don't call a girl Michael, Michaela is nice x

It’s not her surname. It’s her first name (changed when she became a nun)
