Michael for a girl

tova · 31/05/2023 15:07

DP has been set on Michael for a boy for this and our last pregnancy, however each time the baby has been a girl. I'm due shortly and we still dont have a name. I was watching Derry Girls which has Sister Michael it and I've actually started thinking I really like it for a girl. Is this just my hormones making me go mental?

OP posts:

I assume your on the wind-up?

They aren’t all Catholic (most are). Call The Midwife, the Nuns are Anglican for example. You get Lutheran and Orthodox Nuns too.

Oh I thought call the midwife nuns were Catholic

Hush your mouth. C of E. Hench a vicar not a priest.

I think you're right, it's definitely the hormones...

I'm don't mind Michaela but not 100% about it.

That’s not how nuns names work! We had a sister Mary Joseph. I assume it’s just a saint they admire, but like when you choose your confirmation name.

TinyTear · 31/05/2023 16:19

Add Mary to the start but call her Michael

In Portugal it was very common to have a Mary John and Mary Joseph that everyone knew as John or Joseph - I know at least 3 female Johns and one Joseph in Portugal (Maria Joao and Maria Jose)

Also Buddhist nuns

RichTeaCheddars · 31/05/2023 16:24

I like the name Michael for a boy but I had a girl and I couldn't find a good female alternative either so I'm reading this thread with interest.

To me Michaela although only one letter different sounds too different to Michael to be a replacement. Probably my issue with all female versions tbh.

'my-call' 'mi-cul'

'me-kay-la' ''me-shell'

TheHandbag · 31/05/2023 16:26

Michaela or Michelle for a girl rather than Michael.

ActDottie · 31/05/2023 16:30

Don’t do it! And don’t do michaela either it’s a chavvy name!

There are Protestant nuns ( actually, the original nursing order in Call the Midwife are Anglican , not Roman Catholic).

Maireas · 31/05/2023 16:33

I think we're going round in circles now....
Anyway OP, let us know what name you choose!

Tiddlypomtiddlypom · 31/05/2023 16:36

I don’t even really like it for a boy. It’s very meh. But for a girl? You’ve lost me.

LatteLady · 31/05/2023 16:44

Michael is actually a unisex name, Michael Learned is the actress who played Olivia Walton.

willWillSmithsmith · 31/05/2023 16:45

Please don’t do it. Call her Michaela (Mik ay la). Speaking as a female I would seriously hate being called Michael and would resent my parents for it. I’d also change my name.

willWillSmithsmith · 31/05/2023 16:49

Maireas · 31/05/2023 15:26

What about when they're in the woods?

You beat me to it but mine was more crude 😁

JaneJeffer · 31/05/2023 15:58

What do you mean @Sugarfree23? It's a fact Confused

I ended up googling 🤯
My brains are blown to bits!

It’s like James though. Although apparently unisex they’re just too male to most people. It’s the same as some names that can be used for boys - Shirley, Marion, Hilary, Lyndsey, Tracey, they’re just too feminine for my taste to lumber on a boy.

Cheers 🍻 for the education and enlightenment. I seriously did not know that.

Sugarfree23 · 31/05/2023 16:54

Is Michelle not a female form of Micheal?
Although it seems a sorted of dated 1970s name.

You’d better move to Portugal then OP as it’s probably the only place (or other strongly Catholic countries) where she won’t feel embarrassed. 😁

Framboisery · 31/05/2023 16:56

JaneJeffer · 31/05/2023 15:16

The actress who played Olivia Walton is called Michael Learned. And the bass player in The Bangles is called Michael Steele.

Americans do seem to be more into unisex names than brits.

She also played Jeffrey Dahmer's grandma in the recent series Dahmer.

STLLAP08 · 31/05/2023 16:56

As a Star Trek fan lead character on discovery is a woman and called Michael which I thought was odd. I think to be honest your child might not appreciate it

MakeMineADouble81 · 31/05/2023 16:56

pizzaHeart · 31/05/2023 15:58

Don’t do this OP , please .
It would be forever with your little girl that she was a disappointment: her father wanted a boy so much that couldn’t accept that she’s a girl and even gave her boy’s name.

Yes this. Kyle Richards is called Kyle because her father really wanted a son. It's quite sad.

Paintandpots · 31/05/2023 16:58

JaneJeffer · 31/05/2023 15:19

Harsh

But true.
A name should be something the kid is proud of.

Absolem76 · 31/05/2023 16:59

Michael is a boy's name. Nuns lose their own names and are named after saints many have boys names. It doesn't mean it's a suitable name for a girl.
Michelle or Michaela is the female version
