Michael for a girl

DP has been set on Michael for a boy for this and our last pregnancy, however each time the baby has been a girl. I'm due shortly and we still dont have a name. I was watching Derry Girls which has Sister Michael it and I've actually started thinking I really like it for a girl. Is this just my hormones making me go mental?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Yes this. Kyle Richards is called Kyle because her father really wanted a son. It's quite sad.

I wondered why she was called Kyle.

It can’t be nice to know you’ve been given a boys name because your parent was so set on having a boy they just tossed the name to you instead without any thought to how you would feel.

There's a massive right wing proto nazi royal princess who's called Michael isn't there? So that would put me off. But, also, Ma Walton, who is a good role model.

NellietheNumpty · 31/05/2023 17:03

Another vote for Mickie

SheilaFentiman · 31/05/2023 17:03

@Larner she’s not actually named Michael, she took her husband’s first name - Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.

She was born Marie-Christine

We love the name James for a girl. It's on our shortlist. Michael though I just can't get behind. Love the idea for Mica for you though

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 31/05/2023 17:09

It’s hormones. I think we need to stop parents registering names until baby is 6 months and your not still mental.

Michael would just be setting her up to have the stuffing kicked out of her in school, kids are evil.

CurlewKate · 31/05/2023 17:09

Those of you who would call your girl Michael, would you call your boy Emily? If not, why not?

Ohyoudodoyou · 31/05/2023 17:13

If not that, then keeping with the theme, how about 'Ted'?

CurlewKate · 31/05/2023 17:15

@Ohyoudodoyou I think Dougal's sweetly pretty for a girl...

Hush your mouth. C of E. Hench a vicar not a priest.

Not so. C of E have deacons, priests, bishops as orders of ministry. Being a vicar - or a chaplain, or a rector, or a curate etc -- is just the job title.

Because Michael is a genderless angel's name, whereas Emily is the feminine derivative of Emil, a masculine boys name.

Going against the grain here and saying I love Michael for a girl!

There's a woman in the new Star Trek called Michael and she's very cool and wears it well

Nope. Making the point about the programme. Characters clearly not RC.

daisychain42 · 31/05/2023 17:25

Maybe look at other angel names that might be more suitable eg. Gabriel.

The producer always names his heroines a traditionally male name. He also produced Dead Like Me where the main girl is called George, and something else too.

Answering the point about Michael and Michael sounding different.
English is the main language where it's My-kul. In Irish it's Mee-hal. Michele is Italian masculine version and sounds pretty much like Michaela.

SunnyFog · 31/05/2023 17:30

Michaela and Michael sounding different, spellchecker sorry.

Ah sorry. Understand now.

booksandbrooks · 31/05/2023 17:31

Omg the flashbacks to trying to name my kids whilst pregnant. Half my list is actually insane and I still consider deed poll from time to time. Grin

RoseMarigoldViolet · 31/05/2023 17:37

Hormones. Don’t do it!

IglesiasPiggl · 31/05/2023 17:39

You could perhaps get away with it as a middle name but not as a first name. I always think it's ill-advised to set up your child for a lifetime of explaining their name.

Littleroseseverywhere · 31/05/2023 17:44

If you’re going to do that to your kid do it properly. Fill your boots. Call her Kevin. Much better than Mike.

Babyroobs · 31/05/2023 17:44

These baby name threads get stranger by the day.
