Michael for a girl

DP has been set on Michael for a boy for this and our last pregnancy, however each time the baby has been a girl. I'm due shortly and we still dont have a name. I was watching Derry Girls which has Sister Michael it and I've actually started thinking I really like it for a girl. Is this just my hormones making me go mental?

Don't lumber your dd with a boy's name. She will get teased mercilessly at school.

MrsCarson · 31/05/2023 17:53

I used to work with a woman called Michael, not Michaela or other variation. She didn't seem to mind people thinking she was a he before they met her, she just rolled her eyes each time someone said Oh I thought you were a man. This was in the 80's.

CurlewKate · 31/05/2023 18:14

@ODFOx "Because Michael is a genderless angel's name, whereas Emily is the feminine derivative of Emil, a masculine boys name."

Yeah, sure. That's why!😉

EmmaGrundyForPM · 31/05/2023 18:15

My dh has a name that could be male or female (along the lines of Jordan or Ashley). It's never bothered him that some people assume he's female before they meet him.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 31/05/2023 18:17

Mickie?

Helenloveslee4eva · 31/05/2023 18:19

The actress who plays mum in the Walton’s was called Michael …

I assume he'd be happy to call his son Lily, then.[insert girl's name of choice.]

Only on MN do you read/hear of supposed intelligent adults wanting to name girls Michael or James.

They are male names, like it or not.

It really is another world on here.

Would you call your newborn son Sophie or Imogen, thought not.

Florissante · 31/05/2023 19:02

SheilaFentiman · 31/05/2023 17:03

@Larner she’s not actually named Michael, she took her husband’s first name - Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.

She was born Marie-Christine

It's her title, not her name, as this is the protocol for the wife of the younger son of a peer. Her first name is the same.

I think you're being quite unkind with your words, personally. Both our late fathers were called James and we aren't finding out the gender of our baby so potentially, she WILL be called James as we quite like it. We know a couple of girls called James and we may choose a feminine middle name.

everyone is entitled to their opinion but kindness goes a long way...

No, we called our sons traditional boys names.

I was just saying that some names move from being boys to being girls names over time (Hilary, Shirley, Kim etc) and others are flexible.

feralunderclass · 31/05/2023 19:06

I went to school with a girl called Michael but it was spelled Michel, apparently it is biblical (her parents purposely spelled it different as they didn't want everyone saying it was a boys name). It caused a lot of confusion and in the end she informally changed it to Michelle.

CurlewKate · 31/05/2023 19:25

@CR7 and will you call a subsequent son Iris?

So your husband really wants a son but so far his swimmers have only managed to create girls, and he now wants to give your final child a boys’ name regardless of their sex? Yeah. That sounds like a really healthy dynamic for your precious baby.

Did you ever notice that names quite commonly shift from male to female but they never go the other way? Ever thought about why that might be?

CurlewKate · 31/05/2023 19:31

@CR7 I presume you don't live in the UK? Because there have been no girls called James in the UK since 1996......

Unfortunately we are unable to have more children

I honestly don't know where you and the other poster who said something similar have got that from. We already have two boys, just the last pregnancy and this one, before we knew they were girls, the name that he liked if it was a boy is Michael. He's besotted with our daughter and will be with the one on the way too.

Thanks for the additional info.

Your OP and subsequent posts weren’t clear about that in the slightest. You said this and the ‘last pregnancy’ had been girls. You gave no information about any other children. Perhaps if two totally separate MNers have made the same inference you might consider that we ‘got it from’ your posts.

But I didn't say anything to suggest that he wanted a boy over a girl? Only that the name he liked if they were boys was Michael..

Anyway, it seems to be becoming a bit serious on this thread now and had started off quite light hearted. I had a moment of madness while watching Derry Girls but I don't intend to call my daughter Michael.

What about the female/jewish version of Michael, Michal.

I was going to suggest this. I have a lovely friend from the US called Michal. Pronounced pretty much the same, her nickname is Mikie (said My-key) and I love both her full name and nickname. It draws a line as it looks like a girl's name or possibly unisex that Michael doesn't, while also having the same pronunciation. Congratulations and good luck ☺️

For the sake of your baby I am genuinely pleased to hear this. All the best.

LatteLady · 31/05/2023 20:38

My mother had my eldest brother in Dublin and her obstetrician was De Valera's son, so a deeply religious family. He asked my mother if she would call the baby, Mary. She said she would consider it for a girl but obviously not for a girl but he apparently was very persuasive. My eldest brother's name is Michael James Mary... it should make it easy find him, but it didn't, but that as they say is a whole other thread.

knobheeeeed · 31/05/2023 21:36

Lord, no.
Nun's names are not their real names. They are given a name of a saint when they enter the novitiate (I think). Sometimes they choose their own and sometimes they are given a name - depends on the order. And in some orders they keep their own name. The idea is to choose a saint they would like to be more like or a saint who has a special meaning to them - that's why they sometimes have male saint's names.

Not so. C of E have deacons, priests, bishops as orders of ministry. Being a vicar - or a chaplain, or a rector, or a curate etc -- is just the job title.

Far too confusing Chuch of Scotland has Ministers, church elders help run the parish, and the Moderator is a Minister who's voted in to the post for a year.
