This awful prayer my aunt had in her kitchen.

Lord of all pots and pans and things
Since I’ve not time to be
A saint by doing lovely things or
Watching late with Thee
Or dreaming in the dawn light or
Storming Heaven’s gates
Make me a saint by getting meals and
Washing up the plates.

Although I must have Martha’s hands,
I have a Mary mind
And when I black the boots and shoes,
Thy sandals Lord I find.
I think of how they trod the earth,
What time I scrub the floor
Accept this meditation Lord,
I haven’t time for more.

Warm all the kitchen with Thy love,
And light it with Thy peace
Forgive me all my worrying and make
My grumbling cease.
Thou who didst love to give men food,
In room or by the sea
Accept this service that I do,
I do it unto Thee.

My friend at school had a golden retriever called Martha

Nice name

doodleZ1 · 23/08/2021 13:23

Someone very old if I'm honest. Though if it's a baby's name they do fit into their name remarkably quickly.

Bellyups · 23/08/2021 13:25

An old lady

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/08/2021 13:26

I really like it. Unsual but everyone has heard of it.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 23/08/2021 13:26

I think of the Dr Who companion Martha, she was pretty awesome. I think its a lovely name.

PostMenPatWithACat · 23/08/2021 13:27

I always think of Mary and Martha in Luke. Mary was depicted as the higher being because she listened to Jesus and Martha as the lower because she carried on working like a little grafter.

I think women are superior to men because they multi-task and work and listen at the same time Grin.

I like it and there has always been a Martha dotted about my dc's friends and they are 20 somethings.

A colleague of mine has the most adorable little girl called Martha. I think it’s lovely and really suits her.

WhatIsThisPlease · 23/08/2021 13:34

I think "what a beautiful name".

APurpleSquirrel · 23/08/2021 13:37

I think of:

My old boss, who made me redundant whilst hiring her friend instead
Martha Stewart

However, DD (6) has a friend called Martha (who is 7 I believe ) so clearly it might be making a comeback.

RubertRoo · 23/08/2021 13:37

It's beautiful. I know a few under 3s called Martha - there are 2 Martha's at DDs nursery and have 2 friends used this name and it's such a lovely name

Inoffensive

PieceOfString · 23/08/2021 13:46

Sadly, I think of a young lady I know aged upper end of primary school who is quite tiresome as she is so entitled. It's not her fault, she is doted on by financially comfortable parents (the kind who can fund numerous hobbies with all the kit etc), she wants for nothing and is rarely contradicted in any way. I don't think she's a bad person, she's the product of her parents, but don't enjoy her company unfortunately as our children are connected so I do see her regularly. That's the only Martha I know.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 23/08/2021 13:49

Cute. One of the kindest girls at our school is a Martha.

GreyhoundG1rl · 23/08/2021 13:50

It's quite old fashioned, but I think it's beautiful.

Lulu1919 · 23/08/2021 13:50

Lovely name

Joolsin · 23/08/2021 13:58

Beautiful name. One of my grandmothers was called Martha, as a child I thought it was terribly old fashioned, but I love it now.
