I only think of The Handmaids Tale. That's put me right off the name Martha.

Allwillbefine · 23/08/2021 14:05

I find it an unpleasant lispy name that conjures up images on plain scullery maids from 100 years ago. I’ve never liked it. In my head it goes with Bertha, Ethel and Mabel - ugly names.

crouchingpheasant · 23/08/2021 14:06

I really like it. Sounds cool and edgy, but also traditional.

pucelleauxblanchesmains · 23/08/2021 14:07

Used to love it, then met several horrible girls with the name in succession at university.

ItsSunnyOutside · 23/08/2021 14:09

A cute name, I think of a homely, calm person who likes cooking, gardening and nature.

Holly60 · 23/08/2021 14:10

Beautiful name

Ilovedthe70s · 23/08/2021 14:11

I just think muffins

GreenClock · 23/08/2021 14:13

Handmaid’s Tale. I’ve only just binge-watched it so it’s on my mind.

A month ago, I’d have had no associations.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 23/08/2021 14:16

I love it, but that is because DD(8) is Martha! She’s so utterly joyful & happy & a great little sister to her ASD sibling (who chose her name!)

andpeggy1 · 23/08/2021 14:21

Child of an alcoholic mother from the archers.

BadgeronaMoped · 23/08/2021 14:22

I also find it inoffensive and it reminds me of the maid in The Secret Garden who teaches miss Mary to "talk Yorkshire".

SunbathingDragon · 23/08/2021 14:26

Of two little girls I know with that name. Both of them are lovely so it has positive connotations to me.

joystir59 · 23/08/2021 14:30

One of the fiestiest and kindest children I've known was called Martha. Martha acted in the f Broken about broken Britain in which she swore and was pretty feral, but she also won school recognition for being empathetic and kind. She was an ace footballer as well. Good name.

joystir59 · 23/08/2021 14:31

F= film

MydogWillow · 23/08/2021 14:33

I think it's a gorgeous name. One of my favourites.

MrsTumbletap · 23/08/2021 14:35

Old lady revival, cute.

Chunkymenrock · 23/08/2021 14:39

My niece! It's a lovely name.

PrettyinPink99 · 23/08/2021 14:53

I think it's a lovely name often spoilt by the fact so many instead pronounce it 'Marfa'...🙄🖕

ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 23/08/2021 15:18

Dowdy and biblical.

SciFiScream · 23/08/2021 15:20

A young relative. Gorgeous name and suits her perfectly.

SherbertLemons · 23/08/2021 15:21

I watched this really messed up film once. It had nuns in it and there was some sort of abuse going on. The main num was called Martha. That's what immediately comes to mind whenever I hear it. But that aside it's cutie sweet.

SirenSays · 23/08/2021 15:22

The only Marthas I've known have been old ladies or dogs. Now it makes me think of Handmaids tale

ragged · 23/08/2021 15:44

It's a family name for DC (great-grandmothers both sides). So kind of traditional for us.

it IS a bit dowdy but kids rejunvenate names.

TenThousandSpoons · 23/08/2021 16:19

A sweet girl. It was on my list but got vetoed.

Standrewsschool · 23/08/2021 16:20

I think it’s a name that will become popular in the next few years.

Perfectly fine name.
