Baby names

Which completely inoffensive names do you absolutely hate for no justifiable reason?

I will start.

Francis.

Loathe it. Couldn't say why really. There are no bad connotations - it's neither 'chav' nor 'toff'. It's not made-up or too-trendy or old-fashioned. I couldn't say that the sound of it is awful. It doesn't remind me someone who bullied me at school. It's not even boring. I just fucking hate that name. Whenever I am introduced to a new baby called Francis, my reaction is always: "But why? For pity's sake, why? Out of all the possible names available, you chose Francis? You have some seriously terrible taste there, people." "Gosh, how lovely."

Same goes for Christopher. And Jenny.

Perfectly inoffensive names. Could give no good reason for my antipathy whatsoever.

There are loads now but I won't name too many as it will offend some people if their DCs are called any of them.

The ones I always had an irrational hatred of (when I was a child/teenager) growing up were Patricia, Pamela, Beverley and Hilary.

I don't think people should be offended. After all, the point of the thread is that it is about an 'irrational' dislike for certain names. Not that the names are unlikeable. Dislikeable. Sorry, it's been a long night Grin

Phoebe. I really can't stand it. Also Olive ( nb, I do like olives).

TheHairyDieter · 13/11/2012 05:46

I also do not like 'Olive'. It reminds me of Olive from On the Buses.

If we don't like something there is normally a reason for it, whether rational or irrational.

I hope I'm not offending anyone but these are the names I don't like much
'Cutey' nickname names - Alfie/Archie/Percy/Ellie/Milly/Tilly/Poppy
Names with unfortunate meanings - Claudia/Hector/Cecilia
Names that I hear too often - Harry/Jack/Amelia/Sophie

lol at 'screw you minty' Grin

I nearly called dd Frances, it's a lovely name (imo) - and I like Francis as well.

My unreasonable dislike is Charlotte. It is so dull imo.

Amelia. I just really, really don't like it. No idea why and I know I am in the minority.

Thomas. It reminds me of farts. Always had done. I must have met a smelly Thomas in my infancy. In my twenties, I ended going out with one for years but he went by Tom so it was bearable.

And Lesley. Just because....

I can't stand Amelia. But I like Emilia.

Ditto dislike of Catherine (it's WRONG) but really like Katharine. Kathryn shouldn't even be allowed.

I don't like Maddie - I always think of a very MAD child.

Toby - toes, and dogs (although all I have met have been lovely)
Nathan - big adolescent feet
Sarah - booooring

Mind you, DHs name has been mentioned and a version of my own. Plus I like terrible embarrassing names that a lot of you would hate (like Ira and Freda).

Well, my name, my DD's name, my mums name, two of my brothers names and two of my nephews names are all on here...

But my DH's isn't??! And he actually has the worst name ever! Even his parents don't like it and call him by his middle name Hmm

I don't care because she is beautiful and lovely and if you met her you would instantly change your minds Wink.

Keith - yuk, yuk, yuk

A lot of '70's names I think are pretty awful but I won't name them because most of us (myself included) will have one!!

I personally like a lot of the names on this thread though especially Alice Smile
