I'm starting a Baby Names mutiny... Who will join me?

CheeseAndBunion · 09/07/2012 21:56

Last year Mumsnetters rallied behind a seemingly pointless quest of mine to find a lost teddy and helped give my son a very Merry Xmas. The comments and posts on my thread were unbelievably kind and I was struck by what a great bunch of people Mumsnetters must be. On the Baby Names forum though I often read comments which would give the impression we are the total opposite and that instead it's populated by quite a vicious bunch.

I have read some awful things written about my child's name on here, comments that have sometimes really stung. If I was posting to ask advice about his weight, hair colour, acne or sexuality then I have no doubt people would reply with kindness but instead I've seen endless posts about how 'x' will never be a doctor or using 'y' is akin to child abuse and that you shouldn't have been allowed to breed if you were going to name your baby 'z' (or worse something beginning with k). I've seen parents and children described in the most awful way just because their naming style differs from others and for the most part the names being attacked are ones in the current top 100. Names that will be unremarkable, commonplace and totally acceptable once our youngsters are young no more. As most people on this forum are likely to be hormonal parents to be, or sleep deprived and angst ridden, I wonder if an intervention is needed?

I'm going to start an appreciation society for the hyphenated. A support network for those with the initial K. A meeting place for the made up, awkwardly spelt and abbreviated. You're all welcome - membership is free and there is booze on offer. Founder members include Tony and Cherie (nickname and slightly common sounding), Condoleeza Rice (made up spelling), Madonna (sounds like a sex worker) and Willie Walsh (never going to get a decent job with a name like that). Kay Burley, Kirsty Young and Kate Middleton have shown interest in joining. Yes, Kate has the far more acceptable 'Catherine' to fall back on but it's obvious she has experienced first hand the negative affect on your life a 'K' name can cause. Our hyphenated patrons have asked to remain anonymous as they know the persecution that might follow if the unfortunate dash in their name becomes public.

So I'll start...

My name is CheeseandBunion and I have a child with a nickname on their birth certificate... And I like it.

Tits, ds3 is also a Harry, even more he is Harry James! I think another mner has a son with the same name, born within days of mine (SOH maybe?)

whenyouseeitwaveorcheer · 09/07/2012 22:33

lego...freakishly I remember a MNer announcing a Harry James being born (cos was just after my DD1 was born) - think it was MamaG, is that you under a namechange or is that the other MNer?

usualsuspect · 09/07/2012 22:33

No its not Shaniqua think birds of a feather Grin

MrsRhettButler · 09/07/2012 22:34

Fanjo I love the name Kailum and I am now going to remember that I like you just for that fact :) (not that wouldn't have liked you anyway you understand) Wink

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 09/07/2012 22:34

Tracey?

gwenniebee · 09/07/2012 22:35

I've only just remembered/realised that our proposed middle name for DC1 (now 11 days overdue Angry) will have a funny spelling, thanks to his (if indeed it is he) paternal gf.

So that will be two of us with dodgy spellings.

I did, however, put a pushy cousin off the scent of our proposed names by telling her that I quite liked Kzylie-Aleeqsha, with a silent z and a silent q. Which makes me a bad person, doesn't it? Blush

usualsuspect · 09/07/2012 22:35

Yep , without the e though.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 09/07/2012 22:36

I had a 50:50!!!

MrsRhettButler · 09/07/2012 22:37

Ohh ok Grin no chance you'll tell us those gs names? I've told my dc names on here before but never both at the same time on the same thread. Not sure what I'm scared of though!

PrettyInDecadence · 09/07/2012 22:38

Oh crap, is two middle names not the done thing either?

Not only could DC2 have a name beginning in a 'K' and ending in an 'i' but they will also have two middle names.

No point in him even going to school, he will be judged and fail to achieve anything anyway Hmm

amck5700 · 09/07/2012 22:39

lol - love this!

Anyone who is told that their child can't be clever or a success with a cute name......just mention Doctor Pixie Mckenna (though to be fair, I don't think that's her real name - think it is Bernadette really)

MrsRhettButler · 09/07/2012 22:39

My best friend is called Tracey :) I don't get why MN hates these names so much.

I'd love to know what those posters on the baby names threads named their dc!

gwenniebee · 09/07/2012 22:39

This DC will have two middle names, whatever gender....

tammy234 · 09/07/2012 22:40

I'll join - my ds's name has been described as 'poncy' and mumsnetters have predicted that his name will make him gay Shock Grin! And my dd's name is too common!

LegoAcupuncture · 09/07/2012 22:40

Actually, I think it may be mamaG. I think you're right.

amck5700 · 09/07/2012 22:41

oh - and my kids have names that begin with C but are pronounced with a K sound......and one of them is an unusual spelling and is apparantly horrible. I like it and love him :)

CheeseAndBunion · 09/07/2012 22:41

Hooray. We're taking over the world already!!

Come on board the chavvy, over-popular, try hards, place names, unisex and borings. I'd forgotten about all of you. In fact even liking a dubious name shall make you eligible to join this elite band of rebels.

I'm thinking of asking Blue Peter if we can have all their old badges now that they're moving off proper telly and no-one will care about them anymore. They called themselves Blue (which as we all know is an offence to humanity) so I'm sure they'll be happy to help.

And yes, tis me with the Stripey monkey story although that was for my 'getting far too popular' named son.

My name starts with a K. It's spelled in an unusual way (which is actually a forrin spelling)
I used to be considered posh before I ventured onto babynames!

PMMummy · 09/07/2012 22:43

Love it! My name is PMMummy and I have two DDs, one P and the other M of the cutesy ickle girlie names never destined to become brain surgeons.

They're both bloody gorgeous and in training to be supermodels instead Wink

TheWoollybacksWife · 09/07/2012 22:43

amck5700

See my post about Bernadette. Wink

MrsRhettButler · 09/07/2012 22:48

I'm itching to guess everyones kids names! PMM are yours Poppy and Molly? Don't answer if you don't want to :)

Fuck it, dd1 is called A n a i a (don't want it to be googleable) and dd2 has a terrible k name Kaiya. There, I'm outed

Oh and they fucking rhyme with each other! Which everyone thinks I did on purpose Angry

PMMummy · 09/07/2012 22:49

MrsRhettButler - one right one nearly right! And your names are gorgeous.
