I'm starting a Baby Names mutiny... Who will join me?

CheeseAndBunion · 09/07/2012 21:56

Last year Mumsnetters rallied behind a seemingly pointless quest of mine to find a lost teddy and helped give my son a very Merry Xmas. The comments and posts on my thread were unbelievably kind and I was struck by what a great bunch of people Mumsnetters must be. On the Baby Names forum though I often read comments which would give the impression we are the total opposite and that instead it's populated by quite a vicious bunch.

I have read some awful things written about my child's name on here, comments that have sometimes really stung. If I was posting to ask advice about his weight, hair colour, acne or sexuality then I have no doubt people would reply with kindness but instead I've seen endless posts about how 'x' will never be a doctor or using 'y' is akin to child abuse and that you shouldn't have been allowed to breed if you were going to name your baby 'z' (or worse something beginning with k). I've seen parents and children described in the most awful way just because their naming style differs from others and for the most part the names being attacked are ones in the current top 100. Names that will be unremarkable, commonplace and totally acceptable once our youngsters are young no more. As most people on this forum are likely to be hormonal parents to be, or sleep deprived and angst ridden, I wonder if an intervention is needed?

I'm going to start an appreciation society for the hyphenated. A support network for those with the initial K. A meeting place for the made up, awkwardly spelt and abbreviated. You're all welcome - membership is free and there is booze on offer. Founder members include Tony and Cherie (nickname and slightly common sounding), Condoleeza Rice (made up spelling), Madonna (sounds like a sex worker) and Willie Walsh (never going to get a decent job with a name like that). Kay Burley, Kirsty Young and Kate Middleton have shown interest in joining. Yes, Kate has the far more acceptable 'Catherine' to fall back on but it's obvious she has experienced first hand the negative affect on your life a 'K' name can cause. Our hyphenated patrons have asked to remain anonymous as they know the persecution that might follow if the unfortunate dash in their name becomes public.

So I'll start...

My name is CheeseandBunion and I have a child with a nickname on their birth certificate... And I like it.

One thing I will say for the baby names topic, is that they are great at coming up with ideas when people need some inspiration.

I have gone off my girls name choice for DC2. I am off to start a suggestions topic in Baby Names now.

Grin I'm sort of wishing I had a Poppy now!

WhispersOfWickedness · 09/07/2012 23:07

Oh, although her middle name is very old lady ish, i.e. never coming back into fashion.

amck5700 · 09/07/2012 23:08

wiggles - my son was going to be called Sam by the midwifes - i went into labour on the 3rd of July and after 14 hours of labour they were sure he would be born on the 4th - alas for them (and for me but for other reasons!!) he wasn't born until about 4 shifts later on afternoon of the 5th

UnSocialite · 09/07/2012 23:08

My name is UnSocialite and I am the proud owner or a Daisy.

I've never quite got this 'I can't imagine an adult X' thing. Given that Alfie, Charlie, Evie and Jack are all in the top 10 at the moment, the adults of 30 years time will all have 'cutesy' names so no one will bat an eyelid at a doctor called Poppy!

UnSocialite · 09/07/2012 23:09

Sorry, not 'all' have cutesy names but they won't be unusual, IYSWIM, and an adult Alfie would be considered normal.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 09/07/2012 23:09

I know of two brothers who called their sons Tyron and Oberon.
The mother of Oberon was dead miffed when he was referred to as "King of the fairies" - she thought it would be too obscure!
They were both dead miffed when we all started referring to them as the two Ronnies!

ScrambledSmegs · 09/07/2012 23:10

My name is ScrambledSmegs, and my DD has a 'try-hard' name on her birth certificate, and a nickname which is apparently too popular and Victorian housemaidy Hmm Confused Sod it,I love her name, and I don't give a stuff what spiteful, judgy-types think.

Thank you OP Smile

oldgreyknickertest · 09/07/2012 23:11

Good thinking OP.

Ds is our LO. He has three family names, one of which is a v usual boys name, one which is a normal surname and one which is an unusual surname turned into a first name about 250 years ago in our family.

So what.

If we had had more, I would have gone for names I see flamed by inverse snobs as well as names flamed by snobs.

I have what was then an unusual name, more usual now, and I love it.

MrsRhettButler · 09/07/2012 23:11

Aww Wiggles Love would have been a lovely middle name :) Jennifer Love Hewitt managed it after all. I wanted Blue as a middle name for dd1 but dp is boring when it comes to names.

If it were soley up to me the dd?s would be called Desiree, Imaani, Tyra, Jaya... Or Simone, I love Simone :) I would love to use Lolita but even I realised its not suitable. Grin

FateLovesTheFearless · 09/07/2012 23:12

If I had had my way ds1 would have been Damian. Love that name and don't give a flying fuck about the film!

usualsuspect · 09/07/2012 23:14

My niece has one of those names , MRsRB

BettyTurnip · 09/07/2012 23:16

wigglesrock - or you could have just called her Val?!

gnushoes - am dying to know your dd'd name - is it Ethel?

PPMummy - thank you for the solidarity with the cutesy names, my dd's also begins with M but not the same as yours

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 09/07/2012 23:17

Sorry, realised have not entered the spirit of the the thread. CBA to say my NN see above. My DD1 has a name not hard to guess if you like my username song. My DD2' s nickname sounds almost the same, butt he full version has an f not a ph, and my son has 3 names in order not to upset any Grandfathers, he is the light of my life.
?!

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 09/07/2012 23:20

Oh, MrsRB, I had the same problem with Jezebel.
And Pagan.

Plaguegroup · 09/07/2012 23:22

Both my DSs' names end in the same letter, I only recently discovered this was a heinous crime against taste and decency.

DS1 is too posh and try hard.

DS2 is too trendy and becoming popular.

Whenever my name comes up people always dislike it, quite often they are unable to explain the reason, they just dislike it.

You can't please everyone. Grin

GnocchiNineDoors · 09/07/2012 23:22

Can I join? My dds name is a nickname and appears on her birth certificate as that.

BettyTurnip · 09/07/2012 23:22

Exactly - I've said this all along. These names will be the norm, the same as our generation have Nicola, Karen, Sarah, Louise, Paul, Mark, Stephen and so on.

MrsRhettButler · 09/07/2012 23:25

Yes! Jezebel is another one I love and I've never thought of it before but Pagan is a really nice name.

Come on then, who's going to admit to having a Nevaeh? Grin

My DD has a girly flowery name which is very popular; and she will apparently never be a high court judge or a surgeon and will never be taken seriously.

I have a boring 80s name which was the most popular girls name in the year I was born. There were 5 of us in one of my classes at secondary school, but it never bothered me!

MrsDV - I adore all of your children's names.

usualsuspect · 09/07/2012 23:28

I know two girls called Nevaeh.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 09/07/2012 23:32

I used to know a wonderful woman called Nevaeh, she was Trinidadian.
Actually making me choke thinking about her.

StateofConfusion · 09/07/2012 23:35

My name is StateofConfusion, my son has a name I've seen described here as "common as muck and boring as fuck" it was no1 boys name for years, but it suits him and has family relevance to us.

My dds name lola has been noted as "stripper"
