I'm starting a Baby Names mutiny... Who will join me?

CheeseAndBunion · 09/07/2012 21:56

Last year Mumsnetters rallied behind a seemingly pointless quest of mine to find a lost teddy and helped give my son a very Merry Xmas. The comments and posts on my thread were unbelievably kind and I was struck by what a great bunch of people Mumsnetters must be. On the Baby Names forum though I often read comments which would give the impression we are the total opposite and that instead it's populated by quite a vicious bunch.

I have read some awful things written about my child's name on here, comments that have sometimes really stung. If I was posting to ask advice about his weight, hair colour, acne or sexuality then I have no doubt people would reply with kindness but instead I've seen endless posts about how 'x' will never be a doctor or using 'y' is akin to child abuse and that you shouldn't have been allowed to breed if you were going to name your baby 'z' (or worse something beginning with k). I've seen parents and children described in the most awful way just because their naming style differs from others and for the most part the names being attacked are ones in the current top 100. Names that will be unremarkable, commonplace and totally acceptable once our youngsters are young no more. As most people on this forum are likely to be hormonal parents to be, or sleep deprived and angst ridden, I wonder if an intervention is needed?

I'm going to start an appreciation society for the hyphenated. A support network for those with the initial K. A meeting place for the made up, awkwardly spelt and abbreviated. You're all welcome - membership is free and there is booze on offer. Founder members include Tony and Cherie (nickname and slightly common sounding), Condoleeza Rice (made up spelling), Madonna (sounds like a sex worker) and Willie Walsh (never going to get a decent job with a name like that). Kay Burley, Kirsty Young and Kate Middleton have shown interest in joining. Yes, Kate has the far more acceptable 'Catherine' to fall back on but it's obvious she has experienced first hand the negative affect on your life a 'K' name can cause. Our hyphenated patrons have asked to remain anonymous as they know the persecution that might follow if the unfortunate dash in their name becomes public.

So I'll start...

My name is CheeseandBunion and I have a child with a nickname on their birth certificate... And I like it.

I don't really get the baby names thread.

It's hard enough to choose a name that you and your DH both like, without trying to please a whole load of random strangers on the Internet.

FateLovesTheFearless · 09/07/2012 22:51

I am fatelovesthefearless. My dd1 is named after a season, dd2 has an old lady name and ends in ie, the horror! Ds1 name sparked a 242 replies thread because it's a surname, linked to a certain community with a white glove and trouser leg pulled up, is the name of a canning company in America and means he can never live in Glasgow. Ds2 has a surname, two middle names. I love all their names Grin

PMMummy · 09/07/2012 22:51

Got it in one - they got flamed on the names thread the other day Sad

IHeartKingThistle · 09/07/2012 22:52

Yay! Stripey monkey was you!

If I join the thread properly will you tell me what his reaction was when he opened the monkey? I must sound like an idiot but I have been wondering since Christmas - I loved that thread!

DS has a surname as first name. DD's name ends in -ie. Sign me up!

amck5700 · 09/07/2012 22:52

I think to be fair, if someone asks you if they like their names or to rate them or whatever, it's okay to give a view but a simple "I like name A", "not keen on name B" or whatever is enough for the OP to guage popularity if that is what they are looking for. I really don't think they are looking for a rant or abuse - a comment as to whether you think it goes with the surname etc again is fine but some seem to get really out of hand!!

usualsuspect · 09/07/2012 22:52

I don't mind posters saying they don't like a name TBH, it's the bloody vile comments that seem acceptable on baby names threads that annoy me,

FateLovesTheFearless · 09/07/2012 22:53

Oh and I have never seen my own name appear on baby names ever. It must be up there with adolf! Confused

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 09/07/2012 22:53

There is nothing wrong with saying you don't like a name but saying a child is trailer trash is awful!

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 09/07/2012 22:54

Mind googling at female version of adolf!

Heavensmells · 09/07/2012 22:55

My dd has a semi popular American type name which has been called chavvy, common and 'just horrid' on here.
Ds1 has a very popular name which was top 10 6 years ago.
Ds2 has a very Italian (though v popular in uk). He does not have Italian roots and looks more celtic than mediterranean.
My name has also been called chavvy on here, baby names threads are more brutal than any aibu threads I have ever seen!

amck5700 · 09/07/2012 22:56

Adolphia-Rose - with a silent K, but just putting dolphie on the bc :o

usualsuspect · 09/07/2012 22:57

Yes, AIBU is a walk in the park compared to the baby names thread.

Flossbert · 09/07/2012 22:57

I rarely venture on to Baby Names thread because it's so unpleasant, but am happy to stand up and be counted in the "trying too hard" brigade.

I will also take this as a lesson not too inwardly sneer at those trying even harder than me!

FateLovesTheFearless · 09/07/2012 22:57

Grin it's not a feminine version of adolf but must be as unacceptable or just not very appealing!

MrsRhettButler · 09/07/2012 22:58

PMM both those names are lovely! I was born on poppy day nov 11th and was outraged my entire childhood that my parents missed the ideal opportuntity to call me Poppy! I'd still like to be called Poppy now tbh Grin

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 09/07/2012 22:59

I love the names poppy and milly they are happy names!

MrsRhettButler · 09/07/2012 23:00

Hmm, just realised I've outed my birthday and kids names on the same thread. Is that really bad do we think?

Cremolafoam · 09/07/2012 23:01

I'm in too . I am married to a K have a dd whose name always gets misheard and spelt wrong and it is often assumed she is a bloke.
Cheers to all the K's and girls with boys names in the whole world!

MagdalenaAlec · 09/07/2012 23:02

Just realized there was a MN's fatwa on names ending in "i": if DC2 turns out to be a DS2, he will probably end up being a posh/trying too hard loo cleaner (or a chavvy high court judge? haha) then.

PrettyInDecadence · 09/07/2012 23:02

I've already outed myself on here as no one checks on baby names but DS is Jesse and, shock horror, DC2 may well be Kai.

PMMummy · 09/07/2012 23:02

Aw thanks ladies, I too have a secret yearning to be called Poppy. Mind you if I'd have had my way she would have been Tallulah ......

gnushoes · 09/07/2012 23:03

Can you join if your kid has the old lady name to end all old lady names? It doesn't begin with a K.

amck5700 · 09/07/2012 23:03

MRB - you might need to change a couple of passwords or rename your children - your choice :o

wigglesrock · 09/07/2012 23:05

MrsRhettButler I went into labour with dd3 on Valentines Day and I had my fingers half crossed that she would make an appearance on the 14th so I could somehow work love into her name Blush She just missed that life blighting middle name by 90 mins Grin

WhispersOfWickedness · 09/07/2012 23:05

Great thread Smile

My name is Whispers and my RL name begins with a K. DS's name has shot up the charts in the 3 years since we picked it, and now regularly appears on the names you irrationally hate/overused names threads. I couldn't give a stuff about popularity personally. Seem to have got away with DD's name though, it appears to be very much approved of here.
