I'm starting a Baby Names mutiny... Who will join me?

CheeseAndBunion · 09/07/2012 21:56

Last year Mumsnetters rallied behind a seemingly pointless quest of mine to find a lost teddy and helped give my son a very Merry Xmas. The comments and posts on my thread were unbelievably kind and I was struck by what a great bunch of people Mumsnetters must be. On the Baby Names forum though I often read comments which would give the impression we are the total opposite and that instead it's populated by quite a vicious bunch.

I have read some awful things written about my child's name on here, comments that have sometimes really stung. If I was posting to ask advice about his weight, hair colour, acne or sexuality then I have no doubt people would reply with kindness but instead I've seen endless posts about how 'x' will never be a doctor or using 'y' is akin to child abuse and that you shouldn't have been allowed to breed if you were going to name your baby 'z' (or worse something beginning with k). I've seen parents and children described in the most awful way just because their naming style differs from others and for the most part the names being attacked are ones in the current top 100. Names that will be unremarkable, commonplace and totally acceptable once our youngsters are young no more. As most people on this forum are likely to be hormonal parents to be, or sleep deprived and angst ridden, I wonder if an intervention is needed?

I'm going to start an appreciation society for the hyphenated. A support network for those with the initial K. A meeting place for the made up, awkwardly spelt and abbreviated. You're all welcome - membership is free and there is booze on offer. Founder members include Tony and Cherie (nickname and slightly common sounding), Condoleeza Rice (made up spelling), Madonna (sounds like a sex worker) and Willie Walsh (never going to get a decent job with a name like that). Kay Burley, Kirsty Young and Kate Middleton have shown interest in joining. Yes, Kate has the far more acceptable 'Catherine' to fall back on but it's obvious she has experienced first hand the negative affect on your life a 'K' name can cause. Our hyphenated patrons have asked to remain anonymous as they know the persecution that might follow if the unfortunate dash in their name becomes public.

So I'll start...

My name is CheeseandBunion and I have a child with a nickname on their birth certificate... And I like it.

This is the first time I have read anything on the about baby names on mumsnet. Obviously should have checked sooner as my just turned one DD has a k name (with an awkward spelling) and two middle names ( one biblical and one random Norwegian one cos that's where I met DH).

My name is a typical 80s one and my mum got the inspiration from the actress who played the bionic woman!

amck5700 · 13/07/2012 16:14

I agree with people suggesting names that are clearly of their own agenda and not inkeeping with the style that the person has given.

We all (well, most of us :)) know what names are suitable in the area that we live in. Some people live in upper/middle class areas and some people don't, some people live in multicultural areas and others don't so when someone asks for opinions of say Kyle or Jack, suggesting that you prefer Crispin or Cecil is not necessarily helpful or appropriate

amck5700 · 13/07/2012 16:16

sorry, i meant I agree with the comments about that, not agree that they should do it!

hypoxia · 13/07/2012 16:20

amck5700, I LOVE the names Crispin and Cecil! Might have to have another son to use them... :)

amck5700 · 13/07/2012 16:47

lol hypoxia, that's the point, there is nothing wrong with any of the names, it's just down to what you like and whether you feel that it fits in with your family and surroundings. I do know and adult Crispin but no kids - have I just come up with a mums net name?!!

kerala · 13/07/2012 18:19

I was told on MN that DD2s name sounded like a boat. Never been able to forget that comment!

bamboozledAardvark · 13/07/2012 18:23

See, I don't know where I fit in here! DD has a very Mumsnetty, Greek goddess name Hebe whilst DS has, apparently, got a 90s 'chav' name Levi. He has a Mumsnetty middle name though so it's all right :o

Igmum · 13/07/2012 21:36

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful thread!

DD has a name beginning with Z cos I think it is cool and she is already used to repeating it several times until people get the idea. Might also be the reason she is so bad at spelling mind... Grin

Jins · 14/07/2012 12:39

DS1's name is described as 'incredibly dull'
DS2's name is generally liked. I obviously got the hang of it

TitWillow · 14/07/2012 14:03

My name is TitWillow, and my RL name was last popular in the 1800's, I have never met another, and spent my childhood having the piss ripped out of me. 8 out of 10 people still make a joke when they meet me. DH grew up with a German name in rural Wales.

So DS has a top ten, boring name. One which has been referred to on here as "poxy." Don't care.

ThisTimeNextYearRodney · 14/07/2012 16:03

I have a K name, and DS2 had an Irish name that I spell with a K Shock

DS1's name is often described as wet, and occasionally as try hard

I love them

hurricanewyn · 14/07/2012 17:04

My name is hurricanewyn & I have just made the mistake of doing an advanced search of my DDs name Sad.
Well, one of the first threads is 10 pages of vitriol and snobbery. 10 whole pages.

Fuck 'em. I'm in.

Flutterbutterby · 14/07/2012 21:51

My name is Flutter and as well as having an unusual name myself (which probably wouldn't fit MN criteria but I've always loved it and never met another) we called our DD a K name AND it came to me in a dream; G*d forbid! DS is a Marmite name. I love both of their names and they are (so far) the only ones we've met. They don't make a logical "sibset" but I really don't care; they SOUND great together! (sorry for random shouting, can't figure out italics on phone!).

Also, just remembered that upon meeting my new boyfriend (now DH) one friend said "he's lovely, shame about his name". Which I thought a) incredibly rude and b) weird because I really love his name! Maybe that says something about my naming style?

Flutterbutterby · 14/07/2012 21:59

Oh, I forgot to mention that DD's name is ALSO spelt phonetically, shock horror, what WERE we thinking?! (again, sorry for shouting).

MabliD · 14/07/2012 22:27

My name is Mabli, and my daughter has a cutesy-poo ie name has a over popular old lady name has a nickname on her bc has a horrible old lady name is called Elsie. And perfect for her it is too.

And she has two middle names too. :D

Mrschristiangray · 15/07/2012 22:09

My ds and dd have names starting with the same letter which will, according to many, lead to a life of complete postal confusion and farce like mail opening of wrong letters!!

rockinhippy · 16/07/2012 13:51

I don't give a rat's arse whether my DCs' names would pass the high court judge test. Frankly, I can't think of a more tedious profession anyway and I hope they'll all be super creative instead

Oh YESSSSSS!!!! I second that too ? apart from having what I don't doubt would be seen as a "try too hard name" by the MN judgeypants my own DD (according to her teachers) has the ability to do pretty much anything she chooses - yet I LOVE the fact that so far her dream job is to be a Tattooist - so Neeerrrrr from me tooGrin

rezzle · 20/07/2012 23:42

DS is Harley - does that meet the requirements?

PrettyInDecadence · 21/07/2012 15:45

Depends, rezzle - does he have a number of middle names with a double barrelled surname?

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 21/07/2012 17:29

I have one of them rezzle . Because he is my dc2 he only has the 2 middle names (took me a while to warm up, poor old dc5 Grin)

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 21/07/2012 17:30

rezzle · 21/07/2012 17:41

Only the two middle names?! How many does your DC5 have :o

rezzle · 21/07/2012 17:42

And yes, two middle names and a double barrelled surname. Is that not the done thing?

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 21/07/2012 17:49

He has four. Grin

rezzle · 21/07/2012 17:51

That's great, what a way of using all of your favourite names!
