I'm starting a Baby Names mutiny... Who will join me?

CheeseAndBunion · 09/07/2012 21:56

Last year Mumsnetters rallied behind a seemingly pointless quest of mine to find a lost teddy and helped give my son a very Merry Xmas. The comments and posts on my thread were unbelievably kind and I was struck by what a great bunch of people Mumsnetters must be. On the Baby Names forum though I often read comments which would give the impression we are the total opposite and that instead it's populated by quite a vicious bunch.

I have read some awful things written about my child's name on here, comments that have sometimes really stung. If I was posting to ask advice about his weight, hair colour, acne or sexuality then I have no doubt people would reply with kindness but instead I've seen endless posts about how 'x' will never be a doctor or using 'y' is akin to child abuse and that you shouldn't have been allowed to breed if you were going to name your baby 'z' (or worse something beginning with k). I've seen parents and children described in the most awful way just because their naming style differs from others and for the most part the names being attacked are ones in the current top 100. Names that will be unremarkable, commonplace and totally acceptable once our youngsters are young no more. As most people on this forum are likely to be hormonal parents to be, or sleep deprived and angst ridden, I wonder if an intervention is needed?

I'm going to start an appreciation society for the hyphenated. A support network for those with the initial K. A meeting place for the made up, awkwardly spelt and abbreviated. You're all welcome - membership is free and there is booze on offer. Founder members include Tony and Cherie (nickname and slightly common sounding), Condoleeza Rice (made up spelling), Madonna (sounds like a sex worker) and Willie Walsh (never going to get a decent job with a name like that). Kay Burley, Kirsty Young and Kate Middleton have shown interest in joining. Yes, Kate has the far more acceptable 'Catherine' to fall back on but it's obvious she has experienced first hand the negative affect on your life a 'K' name can cause. Our hyphenated patrons have asked to remain anonymous as they know the persecution that might follow if the unfortunate dash in their name becomes public.

So I'll start...

My name is CheeseandBunion and I have a child with a nickname on their birth certificate... And I like it.

Good idea, I'm all for debate but some people get strangely vitriolic over names!

So, my name is Sl1nkyMalinki and I'm hyphenated. And my dd has a beautiful name of which I tweaked the spelling and she will now suffer the same fate as me: always having to repeat yourself and spell it out Blush. DS is always known by his nickname. Oh dear Confused

cakeismysaviour · 09/07/2012 22:24

I am cakeismysaviour and if DC2 is a boy, I want him to be called Bruno Hercules.

lauratheexplorer · 09/07/2012 22:24

I have a hyphenated first name as does DD1. No K's.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 09/07/2012 22:24

You can see that I have commited the sins of using surnames as first names, shortened names AND my 5 DCs have 21 names between them.

AND if DC5 had been a girl he would have been named Tallulah Honey Butterfly Bo.

NER!

MadStaringEyes · 09/07/2012 22:24

Oh, also Dp and ds1 share the dodgy middle name.

I am but a hyphen away from a full house!

whenyouseeitwaveorcheer · 09/07/2012 22:25

Titsalina - is DS2 a Harry?

MrsRhettButler · 09/07/2012 22:25

Oooh I'm in and I'm just dying to know your gc's names Usual

Its a shame we have to be annonymous as I'd love to have a thread full of posters admitting to having dc call Jayden ( which I think is lovely btw) I am NOT a name snob and my dd1's name is so unheard of I only know of one more and that mother stole it from me and also saw one on Maury!

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 09/07/2012 22:25

Oh and names that end in an i are also a worry too. No judges with names ending with an i.

Quite a lot of welsh names end with an i so we are all a bit buggered.

LegoAcupuncture · 09/07/2012 22:26

Mrsdeveeres, I love the name Coltrane!

I've apparently been pronouncing ds1's name wrong all his life, going off some threads on here.

MagdalenaAlec · 09/07/2012 22:26

I'll join too:

My name is Magdalena and I gave DS a nn as name (shame on me) which sounds old-fashioned and v Scottish (again, shame on me) to DS1 and I am about to inflict either an horribly posh name (I am a terrible Mom) or a loo cleaner/mouthwash name (I definitely should not be able to breed) on DC2.
And I don't care at all.

Great post btw, OP!!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 09/07/2012 22:26

Of course he is! Grin here is me being a massive Potter fan and I still didn't click until someone asked if I'd named him after Harry Potter Blush
He gets quite cross when people assume he is a Harrison or a Harold though. Grin

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 09/07/2012 22:27

Usual I am v v curious now!

Rachel130690 · 09/07/2012 22:27

My name is Rachel and I'm due to call my ds an uncommon name, that's a nn and ends in ie :) and I couldn't care what others think.

tethersend · 09/07/2012 22:28

I am tethersend and I named both my daughters after middle aged women.

Angie & Shirley.

People from all different backgrounds are united in eyebrow raising and fixed smiles when told their names Grin

PrettyInDecadence · 09/07/2012 22:28

Our proposed name for DC2 ends in an 'i', too

He is most definitely destined to be a loo cleaner now.

Showmethemhappyfeet · 09/07/2012 22:28

MrsDV I love your kids names! Coltrane is great!

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 09/07/2012 22:28

shangrilala never! The neeeeerve!

MagdalenaAlec · 09/07/2012 22:28

oh, I forgot to add that I give TWO middle names to my DCs. :o

Doilooklikeatourist · 09/07/2012 22:29

My name is Doilooklikearourist , and my children both have boringly normal names but they won't be high court judges , not ambitious in that direction

My RL name is so classic that the midwife told my mother she shouldn't give the baby that nasty old fashioned name ( well it was 1960 , they told it like it is then, not PC at all )

MrsRhettButler · 09/07/2012 22:29

Usual is your dd's name Shaniqua? Shaniqua gets picked on everywhere, I have one in my family and she's a gorgeous girl. :)

whenyouseeitwaveorcheer · 09/07/2012 22:29

Harry is a lush name titsalina, it's my grandad's name and I would have used it if either of my DC had have had a willy!

TheWoollybacksWife · 09/07/2012 22:29

My name is TheWoollybacksWife and 2 of my 3 children have names that have been in the top 10 baby names since records began. Smile BTW they are the only ones in their respective years with those names.

Surely at some point in history all names have been made up or we would all be called Athelstan and Wulfrida (Apologies to those of you with DC's called those lovely names). It's a point I love to discuss with my Mum who called my sister a saint's name (her only naming criterion) that was a nickname until the saint was canonised. (Bernadette - St Bernadette's real name was Marie Bernarde).

My RL name is usually mentioned within 2 or 3 posts when there is a "What names will NEVER come back into fashion" thread. Grin

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 09/07/2012 22:30

I don't even think you can clean loos if your name ends with an i. Dear o dear.

BettyTurnip · 09/07/2012 22:30

My name is Betty and I'm standing up for my daughter's name, which according to some of the miserable biatches around these parts, is of the "God, I hate those fluffy, cutesy, ickle girl, will never be PM or brain surgeon, ending in -ie- type of names" persuasion.

We love it, she loves it, what's the big deal?

PrincessOfChina · 09/07/2012 22:31

My name is PoC and my daughter has a Mumsnet name. Nobody in RL had heard of it when we announces her birth, we're frequently asked if we made it up and the anaesthetist had to Google it while they were stitching me up. It's suggested on most threads on here though.

As penance, she does have an Old Lady name as a middle name.
