I'm starting a Baby Names mutiny... Who will join me?

CheeseAndBunion · 09/07/2012 21:56

Last year Mumsnetters rallied behind a seemingly pointless quest of mine to find a lost teddy and helped give my son a very Merry Xmas. The comments and posts on my thread were unbelievably kind and I was struck by what a great bunch of people Mumsnetters must be. On the Baby Names forum though I often read comments which would give the impression we are the total opposite and that instead it's populated by quite a vicious bunch.

I have read some awful things written about my child's name on here, comments that have sometimes really stung. If I was posting to ask advice about his weight, hair colour, acne or sexuality then I have no doubt people would reply with kindness but instead I've seen endless posts about how 'x' will never be a doctor or using 'y' is akin to child abuse and that you shouldn't have been allowed to breed if you were going to name your baby 'z' (or worse something beginning with k). I've seen parents and children described in the most awful way just because their naming style differs from others and for the most part the names being attacked are ones in the current top 100. Names that will be unremarkable, commonplace and totally acceptable once our youngsters are young no more. As most people on this forum are likely to be hormonal parents to be, or sleep deprived and angst ridden, I wonder if an intervention is needed?

I'm going to start an appreciation society for the hyphenated. A support network for those with the initial K. A meeting place for the made up, awkwardly spelt and abbreviated. You're all welcome - membership is free and there is booze on offer. Founder members include Tony and Cherie (nickname and slightly common sounding), Condoleeza Rice (made up spelling), Madonna (sounds like a sex worker) and Willie Walsh (never going to get a decent job with a name like that). Kay Burley, Kirsty Young and Kate Middleton have shown interest in joining. Yes, Kate has the far more acceptable 'Catherine' to fall back on but it's obvious she has experienced first hand the negative affect on your life a 'K' name can cause. Our hyphenated patrons have asked to remain anonymous as they know the persecution that might follow if the unfortunate dash in their name becomes public.

So I'll start...

My name is CheeseandBunion and I have a child with a nickname on their birth certificate... And I like it.

BringBack1996 · 09/07/2012 22:14

Great thread!

My name is BringBack and my DC have boring names. They will grow up to be unidentifiable and anonymous, but who cares because I love their names!

gwenniebee · 09/07/2012 22:15

My name in rl is an English misspelling derivative of a Welsh name. I'm named after my granny, so it's not a modern name. I've never met anyone else with "my" spelling although I believe there are some.

I have my opinions on names - as a teacher you get "things" about certain names because of their associations. However, I would never judge a child before knowing them (even if their initial was K)!!

[Waves at blondie whose daughter's name is really pretty :)]

usualsuspect · 09/07/2012 22:15

The K thing is weird.

IHeartKingThistle · 09/07/2012 22:15

Brilliant OP!

Can I hijack a bit? Was it the stripy monkey? I have often wondered what that little boy's Christmas morning was like!

CalamityJones · 09/07/2012 22:16

My name is CalamityJones and sadly CalamityJonesJr may never be a high court judge, apparently solely due to her name.

But it's a very cool name and I love it!

ChickensHaveNoLips · 09/07/2012 22:16

I am a mother to a Jack, and damned proud of it. And yes, he is one of 17 in his class. I give not a shit

PrisonerOfWaugh · 09/07/2012 22:16

I'm here to represent the apparently 'trying too hard' posse Grin

RobinSparkles · 09/07/2012 22:17

TimeToSmile my DD1 is the same. She has a very popular name and not an unusual spelling as such but her spelling isn't the most popular. She wanted a cup with her name on and I couldn't find one.

LegoAcupuncture · 09/07/2012 22:18

I am Lego, and all three of my ds's names are in the top 20. I care not one jot.

Hullygully · 09/07/2012 22:18

My beautiful children, Arthur-Concave-Tinkerbell and Jane say thank you OP.

MadStaringEyes · 09/07/2012 22:19

I'm MadStaringEyes and my name begins with a K. My pfb's first name is American and his middle name is a place. My psb has a Scottish name, and surname, but no Scottish roots.

WendyWobble · 09/07/2012 22:19

ahh a safe haven thread, One of my children's names is met, on here, with will never be a DR/Lawyer crap. My daughter's name appeared alot on the recent name hate thread, although it always crops up on favorite name discussions!

manicinsomniac · 09/07/2012 22:20

I have 2 daughters - one with an mn condemned 'chavvy' name and the other with a 'boring' name.

But I love them.

Mind you, I am happy to say I don't like various names. We're all different and that's a good thing.

WhosPickleisThatOnion · 09/07/2012 22:20

Mad your only a hyphen away from a full house Grin

PrettyInDecadence · 09/07/2012 22:20

My name is PrettyInDecadence and my DS's name is girly and a Scottish insult.

If DC2 is a boy he will most probably have a WAG endorsed 'K' name, along with a horribly dated middle name.

If a girl, DC2 will have a name that is also a describing word.

I am a three time offender on the baby names board

whenyouseeitwaveorcheer · 09/07/2012 22:20

Oh, I've just remembered that both DD1 and DD2 have names that have been dismissed as 'soppy' on here

Grin
SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 09/07/2012 22:21

My name is SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward and I have a K name.

My son also has a K name that is spelt differntky to how MN expect

I am not ashamed!

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 09/07/2012 22:21

My name is MrsD and I have children with names that include:
Jaidon
Harley
Coltrane
Rudy
Levi
Jordon
Hendrix
Lennon
Ashton

No Ks but I feel this group needs to include those with 'chavvy' names too.

I am a long time baby names thread botherer. I just...cant....stay....away....

Me and usualsuspect are always battling away on that sodding board.

AnnaFender · 09/07/2012 22:21

My name is AnnaFender. My DD1 has a 'cutsey' name that ends in an 'ee' sound and is within the top 25 baby names. I chose it back in my blissful days when I had no idea about baby name lists and statistics and connotations and I just thought it was a lovely name that suited my lovely baby.

Great thread cheeseandbunion

Whitershadeofpale · 09/07/2012 22:22

My name is whitershadeofpale and my rp name is hyphenated and begins
with a K.

sydneysuze · 09/07/2012 22:22

I'm in! Agree totally OP, people say the most horrendous things about baby names.

My name is sydneysuze and my children both have names which are foreign, unusual and needtobeexplained. Dammit even my Aussie husband has a Spanish name - we are clearly beyond hope over here at Sydney Towers Wink

ShangriLaLaLa · 09/07/2012 22:22

My name is shangrilalala and I have been daft enough to give my gorgeous DS the most wonderful, strong Welsh name. It's often derided as 'chavvy' on BabyNames. Makes me want to educate the blinkered. Lost cause. Wonderful name, still.

SPsFanjoLovesRussellHoward · 09/07/2012 22:22

Fuck it I'm a Kelly and proud!

Son is a Kailum and proud!

Down with prejudice!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 09/07/2012 22:23

My first is one of 5 in the school and his name is very, very over used, it prompts people to go "nooooo he'll be one of trillions" and it's true, he is 7 and signs mothers/fathers day cards with first name. Initial (think Bob.X)

Ds2 has a nickname as his name and gets cross at people assuming he has a longer version on his bc. Also over used and given during the time of a very popular media character so will be just one of trillions ( this was by accident I didn't cotton onto the world of film/ book/ tv at the time of registration)

DS3 will be given a name that is spelt a bit peculiar, it's not made up or anything it's the way we spell it in our family, he will spend forever correcting it or just letting people spell it the more common way. Or I'll end up calling him a shortened version to save his sanity. Grin

usualsuspect · 09/07/2012 22:23

I am constantly told on that sodding board that I pronounce my own DSs name the wrong way.
