New Year & a New thread - post what you hope to start/finish this week!

I have bought lots of fabby gemstones & I want to try & make some different types of jewellery, different ways of stringing etc.

DH also bought me some rainbow fluorite & I want to make myself a necklace & bracelet, although am still pondering what style I fancy!

(& my bog is sadly neglected, I must try harder!)

Oh christ, I'll make a cuppa before Gordon comes on ....

meridian · 30/01/2008 22:16

whizzz- i have just read a bit of that thread.. and my head is spinning will read some more tommrow... DH is hovering and muttering at me.

Gingermonkey · 30/01/2008 23:15

blooming heck - it's too late, I can't even get to grips with it. I'll read it tomorrow, when I have had a coffee or 3
Why is it that a few people have to always ruin things for everyone else

Nbg · 31/01/2008 13:44

Not sure I have the time to read that thread

Dizzy, I'm wishing your cousin well and hope he has a speedy recovery

Well my mum came and put the sewing machine to rights. But you were all right, it was the tension that was wrong.

Anyway I've had a play, massacred a curtain and made a little fox
I just need to sew his limbs on and I'll put his picture up tomorrow.

I've also had an idea for the easter swap so if I get chance today I'm going to make a start on it.

Now I need to go bead shopping for the fair!

Champs · 31/01/2008 14:02

looong thread there.... really no time to sift through any argy bargy
as lazy as it sounds (and i am...) is there any points that we should know about?

finally remembered to take photos of cards and chocs.... the cards are very basic so play nice

i've been debating about posting my blog as there's updates onthere about MIL which down the line may or may not mean i have to remove links to it from mnet....

chocs

cards more cards and more ahem

meridian · 31/01/2008 14:59

aside from sorting out the new mumsnet crafters blog

i have made 3 bracelets the amathyst is for my mom. thats about it... going to pull some knitting out and tommrow hopefully going to upload some stuff to the etsy shop...

dizzy-- hope all goes well with your cousin.. sorry must have missed your posting before

whizzz- can you just update us on any relevant bits on that mumsnet for sale thread? I honestly tried to read some but the day jsut isn't long enough. never sold anything on there anyway.

champs- will have a look at your pics in a bit my server is being evil to me and not opening things properly

Gingermonkey · 31/01/2008 16:08

Meri - that cake from a couple of days ago looks amazing. You are inspiring me to try and bake, but I have a feeling it will all end in tears (I can cook, quite well apparently, but baking and me are not friends ). DD wants nutella cupcakes...maybe I should give it a go.

Whizzz · 31/01/2008 16:14

OK - here's a summary of the For Sale hoo-ha !

Basically For Sale recently seems to have been 'taken over' by posters who only use MN for buying & selling. I whole new sub-culture seems to have sprung up & its even got so far that the sellers are starting Chat threads in For Sale (so they don't have to venture out of For Sale!). There have been a few instances where sellers have been buying stuff specifically to sell on & these threads have been deleted by MNHQ, again there have been instances where people feel they have been scammed by senign money & not receiving goods & are posting quite nasty threads to try & 'flush out' the seller. 'Regular' MNers (ie those that use the whole board & only want to sell a few bits & bobs) are being squeezed out as the sale threads are being continously bumped, the same items are being repeat listed etc.

To try & solve this MN HQ asked for input from all on the thread I linked to. The upshot for us crafters is, that by some we may be considered alongside the traders (although I must add I haven't seen anything yet that does suggest this). I thought I'd better highlight the issue just in case - to be honest that's why I have never openly 'advertised' the bits & bobs I make on here, I try not to put prices down & ask people to email me rather than discussing it on the board. Like most on here, I don't consider myself a business - just someone covering the cost of a hobby. Hope that makes sense to all

Fubsy · 31/01/2008 16:25

Surely if people are just sellling to eachother on A&C, or say if someone comes looking for Whizzz for an item, thats a private transaction and nothing to do with anyone else?

I must say I dont look at messages in the last 15 mins any more, because I had to scroll through loads of for sale threads, and active convos is a bit like that too.

I wouldnt bother to put anything on the for sale board as it wouldnt stay visible for long.

Meridian that sky on your blog looks awfully like my desktop!

meridian · 31/01/2008 16:28

gm- the nutella cupcakes are easy... all it is is constant mixer action, really its a one bowl job (but I will seperate things into measured bits for ds to help) .. and then once baked and cooled top with nutella... if you want it to be smoother you can mix the nutella in a bowl with cream but they wont last as long... I use muffin tins bought from Ikea for my cupcakes... and its the same basic cake recipe for the cupcakes and the raspberry short cake....

whizzz- dodgy goings on there... and I don't think of crafters as traders ... if anything there should be a second subsection for crafters who want to sell a few bits here and there... I don't want to be a bit buisness I just want to be able to see a few bits to be able to buy more beads and paints and so on to keep crafting.. so I don't get in trouble with DH for spending too much on crafty things... thanks for the info

Whizzz · 31/01/2008 16:28

Yes I agree Fubsy but it has got so nasty at times on For Sale, I would hate for someone to unknowingly get dragged into it

OP posts:
lucykate · 31/01/2008 16:29

i've followed a bit of whats been going on with the for sale bit. so far, i haven't seen any mention of the a&c board specifically, but i do seem to remember a while ago, there was a thread started (the person was just a bit miffed about being ticked off themselves by mn towers for selling) which did have a bit of a moan about crafters selling stuff, and whether or not it should be classed as free advertising

maybe, just so not to antagonize anyone, any selling/private commissions should be kept off board or on the new mumsnet craft blog?

Fubsy · 31/01/2008 19:08

I see what you mean Whizzz. I dont really go there; I have no need for a quinny buzz, whatever that might be!

But I might some day need a nice piece of jewellery or a soft toy!

Shame its getting nasty tho. It does annoy me a bit that some are just traders. Thats what has spoilt most local markets I think, people who buy up tat and sell it on as something great. Ebay is full of it, I dont use that much now.

Gingermonkey · 31/01/2008 19:26

meri - they won't last 2 minutes in my house anyway!!!! My greedy DCs (DD in particular) can gobble down cake like lightening (as can their mother, something I am incredibly proud of!!!). DD asked for a slice of cake the other day, so I cut her a bit, it was nice sized, about 4 inches wide....the greedy little bugger went 'what's that? It's TINY!!!' Greedy, greedy, greedy.
I do have some muffin tins (she says after rummaging around in the cupboard and pulling out some dusty thing), but as we are going to Ikea I'll have a look at the ones you have and maybe buy those (for luck!). I need some bits from the baking tray section (exciting shopping list - not!)

I sold some of DS's clothes recently, because I am fed up with taking really nice stuff to the charity shop for the people that work there to snaffle it . But it was a pain in the bum, the thread just kept disappearing in the depths of 'XXX give me my money you cow or I'm calling the police' and 'anyone want a bumbo/musty spider (or whatever it's called)/quinny/bugaboo/phil and ted etc etc'. Even trying to get rid of stuff for free was difficult (gap pjs for free - you'd think someone would want em!!! )

Gingermonkey · 31/01/2008 20:08

Remember ages ago we were talking about clothkits setting up again? Well, they're previewing at kids.modern at the end of Feb (which for lucky Londoners is in Dulwich).

vInTaGeVioLeT · 31/01/2008 20:33

i have been a very good girl today
i hoovered my skanky dog hair coated stairs cleaned and hoovered and tidied ds's bedroom all while he was at pre-school which thankfully he likes again!!!!
yeah yeah not very crafty BUT afterwards i took some of my cards/scrapbook designs to be looked at by a local shop who are looking for people to join their DESIGN-TEAM i'm so excited and nervous - i hope they like my stuff and don't say what a load of crap "not quite what we had in mind"

Fubsy · 31/01/2008 20:40

Wow - good luck with that - fingers crossed!

vInTaGeVioLeT · 31/01/2008 21:37

thanks fusby

NBG - glad your mum sorted out your naughty sewing machine . . . .now when can she do mine?

meridian - i'm loving the new blog!!! i wish i was as productive as you - i just spend my time wasteing time and putting things off!

WHIZZZ - it's blardy scary on the "for sale" section

meridian · 01/02/2008 08:55

vintage- I hope they like your stuff. I'm sure they will though... ... and really i'm not that productive... I can mimic it very well

Nbg · 01/02/2008 09:34

Meridian, I had to look twice at that photo!
It looks like something generated by a computer.
Totally amazing.

With regards to the for sale stuff, I think if anyone wants to buy from us they will say so. For example I know Whizzz has been shouted a few times for things and I dont honestly think that other "regular" mumsnetters would have a problem with us crafters as we are all "regulars" too (am I making sense?)

I dont think I'm going to be doing much sewing stuff for a while.
Dh and I were chatting yesterday about things and when I realisticly (sp) look at what time I have on my hands, I'll only really have chance to do jewellery ready for the fair (even though its in April!)
The other problem I have is that thanks to an ebay item I sold going missing in the post and us having to fork out the refund even though we had proof of post etc, dh had deleted our ebay account.
So that now means I have to find somewhere else to buy my stuff

meridian · 01/02/2008 09:55

NBG- i know it looked completly fake when it was up in the sky.. a bit like aliens were coming.

sorry to hear about your ebay troubles.. post office troubles... etsy has a supplies section here i haven't bought anything yet but have my eye on some beads .. and I dare not look at the yarns

I suppose I will go do something useful now... like make coffee and find a buiscuit...

Fubsy · 01/02/2008 10:56

Meridian - that was a bad move linking those supplies - just something else for me to waste time drooling over!

Nbg · 01/02/2008 11:20

I've just been doing the same thing fubsy

At least I have somewhere else to fall back on now.
Theres some great stuff on there.

dizzyday07 · 01/02/2008 12:16

Oh my - I've just looked at that suppliers link on Etsy and found this

How can I resist buying these gorgeous fabrics for DD's patchwork uilt!!

meridian · 01/02/2008 12:43

oh dear am i in trouble now?

DH says I need to sell something else before I can buy anything more

so i'm just bookmarking for now...

have not done any real painting jsut messed about with three little canvases I did awhile ago,,, will see how they dry then might bung them on the etsy shop and see what happens.
