(Though, to be honest, I couldn't give a hoot about the world cup.)

EddieIzzardismyhero · 10/06/2010 13:24

mozette, do you mean it winds the Scots up or the English?

IME most of my English friends think it's quite funny - which winds the Scottish contingent up even more, cos we don't even care that they hate us!

shimmerysilverglitter · 10/06/2010 13:24

I agree with OP however I had an ex boyfriend who was Scottish and he supported England over everyone even Scotland and it actually put me right off him tbh. Just seemed odd to have such active dislike for your own countrymen. I had never come across that before.

Janos · 10/06/2010 13:25

Btw what is a 'die hard Scot?

Are there degrees of Scottishness?

helyg · 10/06/2010 13:26

I have nothing against anyone who isn't English supporting England, that is up to them.

But I have to admit that we are a little bit ABE (anyone but England). DS1&2 have decided to support Spain, not sure why.

I think the Liverpool/Everton analogy is very good. Football supporting is almost tribal, you don't tend to switch alliegance.

mozette · 10/06/2010 13:26

winds the English up - just look at the reaction on this thread! Why are England so insecure that they want the support of a wee nation a 10th of their size?

pagwatch · 10/06/2010 13:27

Bessie
I think you have missed the point
I don't think anyone is suggesting scots should support england.
It is the 'anyone but england' tribe who will support whoever is playing England and watch primarily to hope that England get kicked out that the OP is talking about.

The teeny penis fans

Saltire · 10/06/2010 13:27

The Liverpool/Everton comparison is good - it would be like me saying to DH "Oh well, that's Hearts out of the Scottish Cup, so why don't you support Hibs because they are still in".

needsharesinduracell · 10/06/2010 13:27

I do see that mozette, about it being largely banter. I'm speaking from a bit of personal experience as well though. I found myself in a situation of watching an England match during the last world cup with a group of people my husband was working with at the time, all from Scotland, mostly Scottish. They were absolutely deadly serious, and it wasn't any kind of banter situation.

I just thought they all needed to get a grip and grow up to be honest! I think it's a shame if other 'home nations' don't feel they want to support England - as I say, I always would. But just don't support either side then.

scanty · 10/06/2010 13:29

It's not an arrogance thing as someone said. It's a minority, chip on shoulder for being misunderstood and often denegrated by the larger more domineering force.

As was said in the notorious Welsh language thread - most enlish will never be able to understand from the point of the minorit country or culture - you've had too much power and too dominant. BTW- I would definately support the Welsh in the WC as with the Irish.

Ach this is such a complicated subject- it's down to you beating us all those years ago, Jimmy Hill, Thatcher, harping on about your taxes all going to Scotland etc. It is silly but very difficult for most Scots not to feel this way.

Lately I started to hear a lot of 'almost resentment/dislike' towards Scotland which wasn't so obvious before. Would Gordon Brown have been quite so unpopular if he had been English?

backtotalkaboutthis · 10/06/2010 13:29

yanbu, just stupid racism

mozette · 10/06/2010 13:30

I agree with you scanty most Scots know its silly to feel like that but its hard not to feel that way!

OrmRenewed · 10/06/2010 13:30

Isn't that one of the reasons some of the Scots have such an irritation with England. That the English don't even care enough to refuse to support the Scottish team. It's as if the English see Scotland as an adjunct of England so not worth opposing properly. Ditto independence - English people tend to say 'Oh give them independence if they want it so much' which must be infuriating if it's something you feel strongly about.

BessieBoots · 10/06/2010 13:31

Aaaah right.

I think mozette is right- People do it because it gets a reaction. IME it's not only Wales, Scotland, and Ireland that feel like this either... It's just so easy to wind you up.

Also, it may be because if England ever win the world cup, we have to sit through HOURS of programmes about how wonderful it was...

pagwatch · 10/06/2010 13:32

Mozette.

I don't think anyone minds if the scots don't support england although their fans are great when they are behind their own team and tend to be great travelling fans ( well certainly they are for rugby). It would be great to have a kind of home nations attitude to the world cup - as most English would ( and did ) when scotland or Ireland do well for example.
So I am not sure that when Scots are buying shirts by the thousand for every team England plays makes England the insecure part of that equation.

mozette · 10/06/2010 13:32

och shush Backto - we're the same bloody race as you so how can it be racist?

backtotalkaboutthis · 10/06/2010 13:33

ok, will bigotry do?

let's say bigotry

mozette · 10/06/2010 13:34

pag insecurity and to wind the English up has a HUGE part to play. but Orm has hit the nail on the head!

UndertheBoredWalk · 10/06/2010 13:36

Actually am not sure the Liverpool/Everton analogy is that good. Am a scouser a Liverpool supporter, and have always supported Everton in big games as long as they're not playing us, My brother an Evertonian the same the other way around as are all of the people I know.

needsharesinduracell · 10/06/2010 13:36

I don't see Scotland as an adjunct of England. We are all part of the same (supposedly) United Kingdom, so I'll happily support the other teams, although understand if people don't want to actively support my own.

I'm also one for self-determination - if Scottish people all voted SNP and wanted complete independence, that would be fine with me. It would be a shame, but I wouldn't want to stop anyone from being independent if they wanted to be.

Am I infuriating to Scottish people then?

mozette · 10/06/2010 13:36

backto you have to remember the we have a city which excels in bigotry (Glasgow!) but please know that not everyone in Scotland supports Anyone but England just as not all Celtic and Rangers fans hate each other. There is only 5 million of us and i'm sure its not a majority who feel that way!

Now if England didn't qualify and Scotland did do you think that there would be St Andrews flags on Mars Bars, 3 adverts per break about Scotland winning the world cup? Or is that me being narrow minded and bigoted?

glasgowmandy · 10/06/2010 13:37

ok think its getting a bit crazy here now, i just wanted to say that i will be supporting england, regardless if my family like it or not. and i do hope they do well

OP posts:
pagwatch · 10/06/2010 13:37

Oh yes ,good point Orm..

perhaps rugby is slightly different though because England view the Scots at the worst team to lose too - hate them. Yet we can still support the Scots especially against the Southern Hemisphere sides.

And I think the Scots rugby supporters are less anti-english

helyg · 10/06/2010 13:37

Orm you are spot on.

OrmRenewed · 10/06/2010 13:38

Thankyou mozette Hurray!
