That's only half of it though carrie. We still have much more in common with each other than with proper furriners.

When I fly back from Abroad, I kiss the ground, be it in Luton or Prestwick.

I grab my Guardian, my Pret sandwich and a scalding hot cup of tea and thank the lord for making me BRITISH.

Omarlittlest · 12/06/2010 01:37

Could you all just please somehow remember that Ireland is not part of Britian - Northern Ireland is but not the rest of us ..... an independent republic ... own passports different currency and all!

I truly despair of the arrogance/ignorance sometimes - if you British cant get that right what hope is there for sensitivity amongst your own interesting and complex federation.....

gaelicsheep · 12/06/2010 01:42

The Scots/Welsh/N Irish failing to support England is simply sour grapes because they are even more crap at football (if that were possible).

How long will I have to suffer this god forsaken World Cup for? It's day 1 and I'm bored already!

chipmonkey · 12/06/2010 02:17

Omar, where did anyone say Ireland was part of Britain?

SwansEatQuince · 12/06/2010 07:31

Ooh - This argument appears to disappear during Wimbledon.

No 'See You Jimmy' hats there.

gaelicsheep- The Scots/Welsh/Irish are brilliant at football - they just prefer to give the other countries a chance.....

LittleMissSnowShine · 12/06/2010 08:00

@Omarlittlest - Lol, pretty sure that if you're looking for sensitivity then maybe you should remember that there are a hell of a lot of people in NI who would dispute that they are 'part of Britain'.

@gaelicsheep - Surely you understand that it couldn't possibly be sour grapes but is necessarily related to 800 years of umm conquest or oppression or something?? couldn't possibly be as trivial as feeling a bit jealous ha ha

As I said before - world cup football chat = national jingoism and general insensitivity all round. Yawn. Almost makes me want to watch Big Bro to avoid it all

backtotalkaboutthis · 12/06/2010 08:02

people in NI aren't part of Britain, they are part of the UK

Gt Britain = England Scotland Wales
UK = E S W NI

Riven, you've got my vote

@balktotalkaboutthis - really not worth getting into all of this. over 3000 people dead, hundreds more left maimed all more or less over this one issue. people in NI can be British or Irish or both or neither. safest just to leave it at that and hope we manage to have a reasonably peaceful summer since neither NI or ROI got into world cup....

backtotalkaboutthis · 12/06/2010 09:49

er it's not a debate and nothing to do with the troubles

it's just the facts of the matter

Great Britain (geo) is one (more or less) island, Ireland is another island, UK (pol) is Great Britain plus northern Ireland

it's not really a debating issue, rights and wrongs of it and so on

that's the way the geo and pol borders are at the moment

backtotalkaboutthis · 12/06/2010 09:51

Riven that is funny.

Chisel of Cornwall and vote for me. V good. Five points.

It all makes me quite mad. All the historic stuff between England, Ireland (& N Ireland), Scotland etc is just that - historic. England (and Gt Britain) did some awful things way back years ago and certainly long before we, and generations of our ancestors were born.

I find the Irish are the worst for being anti-English and I speak from having 3 stepchildren who were born and brought up in Dublin. My husband is Welsh and tbh, I have never encountered any serious anti-English remarks from the Welsh - just the Scots and Irish. As somebody else earlier stated, if one of the other countries from the UK or Britain were in the World Cup and not England, I would support them all the way.

Why can't people just be nice to each other? .

Ooooh and where I live, there is a large Greek contingent of people born and bred here in England, but family from Greece (or more to the point, Cyprus). They refuse to support England (well, Greece are in the World Cup too so a little bit different) but would it be so bad to support England until they met Greece? All most odd I think.

backtotalkaboutthis · 12/06/2010 11:03

oh my gawd

we've arrived at Tebbit's cricket test

i feel a need to forgive the cornish as they are so completely powerless in every way poor loves

Sod the football!

Riven, gimme your life story! You were raised near Dublin? Welsh somewhere I'm guessing? Lived in the US? All sounds really interesting, I need a timeline

Rockbird · 12/06/2010 13:53
