my whole family are die hard scots, and every single one of them is bashing england to loose the cup, i dont understand it, i hope they do their best and will support them all the way! arnt we all british supporters??

if i talk about it to any of them they are horrified, just this afternoon, my brother was saying he thinks im upsetting dad with supporting them.. oh my god its football, get a grip!!

well come on england!!

OP posts:
backtotalkaboutthis · 10/06/2010 13:39

yes, actually

i would support scotland certainly

really, it's not a majority?

let's see how the thread turns out.. the majority seem so far to see it as a totally harmless wind up

it's chip on the shoulder bigotry

scanty · 10/06/2010 13:40

lets face it, it's a silly childish way of poking our tongues out at you. It's also a lot of fun, especially when we have been so crap and are not there ourselves. Unfortunately there is a really ugly side to it and some Scots are very biggoted against the english - but they are usually morons who like to hate lots of people.

Saltire · 10/06/2010 13:41

I think a big part of the problem with Scots is the -mainly England based- media.

lorelilee · 10/06/2010 13:43

This is such a convoluted subject, with many different facets. Being Scottish and, having lived in England for 20 years, I had many, many discussions/arguments about it. (I have used the Liverpool/Everton analogy many times). It has a LOT to do with the way sport is broadcast in the UK - basically, its almost always the case that the content is biased towards England - the Soccer Aid game at the weekend was a HUGE case in point - although Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland made up part of the ROW team, it was obvious that the reporting team/panel wanted England to win. Another thing - if it was just Scotland who had qualified, do you honestly think for a minute that David Cameron would have flown the Saltire from no 10 - NOT ON YOUR LIFE! Finally, I was always amazed that my English colleagues expect us to support their team just because they had chosen to support ours - how arrogant?!!

Having said all that, I do find the rampant anti-England/English movement up here ridiculous - if anything goes wrong, it's always 'their' fault. We have got enough to be proud of without always doing our neighbours down!

backtotalkaboutthis · 10/06/2010 13:45

well you shouldn't play up to it then scanty

we have the same with the BNP "stealing" the flag, St George and all that

when supporting England you have to be bloody careful not to offend ..any hint of it is jumped on, looked at sideways

really I do think Scotland ought to be given independence if they hate England so much

mozette · 10/06/2010 13:46

"given independence"???? Really? How generous of you!

MollieO · 10/06/2010 13:47

I find the whole anti-English thing really rather odd. I remember supporting Scotland in the 1978 world cup when England didn't qualify. It would have felt odd not to do so or to support a team playing against Scotland. However this has always been an issue for Scottish people and much less so for us English.

backtotalkaboutthis · 10/06/2010 13:48

well the alternative would seem to be fighting for it? I certainly wouldn't fight you for it

would roll over just like that

BessieBoots · 10/06/2010 13:50

I think the point is that, in essence, Scotland is not yours to give.

TheCrackFox · 10/06/2010 13:50

I'm scottish but will be supporting England.

However, the English that get their knickers in a twist over this are as equally pathetic as the ABE crew. It.is.just.football.

mozette · 10/06/2010 13:51

What I meant was Backto is its not "yours" to give. If Scotland wants independence (which I certainly don't) people will vote for it

Great posts by Saltire and Lorelilee

backtotalkaboutthis · 10/06/2010 13:51

but independence is for the union to give

to dissolve itself

christ sometimes I wish it would

don't you want it then?

LetThereBeRock · 10/06/2010 13:51

The bigotry works both ways at times, not really regarding football ,but there was no shortage of Anti Scottish comments during the election, particuarly in the politics forum.

BessieBoots · 10/06/2010 13:53

This thread could go nasty if we start debating the "union" and its origins.

Let's not... The OP was about football.

mozette · 10/06/2010 13:54

Personally I don't want it cos I don't want a slimey little toad like Alex Salmond running the country

Saltire · 10/06/2010 13:54

Letthereberock - During the last rugby world cup I got a lot of what I considered racist abuse by 2 (at the time long serving mumsnetters) over me saying I was going to support South Africa during their match against England. Their comments were left in .One of the MNetters concerned was always very detrimental to the Scots on here but would always always add a after every comment as if that made it ok

It was, as you said, the same during the election, in fact one poster made a comment about what did it have to do with Scotland, another asked why Scotland had MPs at Westminster

lorelilee · 10/06/2010 13:58

Forgot to mention in my original post that the phone number to donate for Soccer Aid ended in 1966! I quite honestly believe that (wrongly, of course) the charity would have missed out on some donations because of that.

EddieIzzardismyhero · 10/06/2010 13:59

"Now if England didn't qualify and Scotland did"

But that's never going to happen mozette, so no need to worry !

Honestly, I think the number of English people bothered by the ABE of the Scots is small - we're too busy fretting about how crap our team are and how many penalty shoot outs we're going to face to waste time worrying whether the Scots care what happens to us!!

PigletJohn · 10/06/2010 13:59

there's a lot of casual racism in some parts of the UK. If it's against the English, it's considered acceptable.

mozette · 10/06/2010 14:00

very true EddieI very true - we can but dream!

EddieIzzardismyhero · 10/06/2010 14:00

Hahaha! Just read MollieO's post and realised it did happen in 1978 - I stand corrected!

mozette · 10/06/2010 14:01

BessieBoots · 10/06/2010 14:01

there's a lot of casual racism in some parts of the UK. If it's against the Welsh, it's considered acceptable.

Fimbo · 10/06/2010 14:02

Well nobody can beat my son, he was born in England, speaks with an English accent but has Scottish parents, he wears a Scottish t-shirt with English socks and English baseball cap.

EddieIzzardismyhero · 10/06/2010 14:02

Really mozette?

I don't think any of my Scottish friends have encountered racism here, but have a number of English friends who have encountered quite nasty racism/bigotry in Scotland .
