to think that being an escort is a valid career choice?

I have a friend who is 19, unqualified and attractive. She was a lap dancer but is now considering escort work. She has tried it a few times and appears able to earn £200 an hour working for what appears to be a reputable (well as reputable as you can get I suppose!) agency in London. I have been thinking about how I feel about this (and discussing it with dh) and can see why she is doing it and I sort of think that I do think that it is a valid career choice (as long as she sticks with the agency who provide back up etc).

"So her choices were the army - killing people; or escorting - fucking people.? "

The army's main aim isn't just to kill people. You ignorant fool.

BitOfFun · 26/05/2010 19:46

I think that the real issue is actually that all the adults in her life have let her down repeatedly, and that she is now being further abused in the sex trade and nobody appears to give shit.

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 26/05/2010 19:51

The army's main aim may not be to kill people, but it's certainly a Key Performance Indicator.

WombFrootShoot · 26/05/2010 19:55

Er...OWO, THat was written by me, in response to:

"She tried the army but didn't like it as she didn't want to kill people which seemed fair enough" from the OP

Don't call ME an ignorant fool, thanks very much. Maybe you could learn about context and satire before posting again?

Just a thought?

whatkatydidathome · 26/05/2010 19:57

I would hope that my dd would grow up with the same morals as me and feel that sex was something that you did as part of a loving, long term and monogamous relationship BUT I accept that I am probably old fashioned in this. Most younger people these days seem to view casual sex as fun and okay. So no i would not want my dd selling sex and would hope that she would not decide to but I also would not turn her out if she did.

I would also be horrified if any of my children joined the forces.

The ignorant fool comment wasn't aimed at you, rather the direct link made between armed forces and killing people. Arf.

BritFish · 26/05/2010 19:59

people, step away from the army, its one of those mumsnets topics that is never even going to end in a polite 'agree to disagree' it just ends in, ironically, war.

WombFrootShoot · 26/05/2010 20:01

APOLOGISE OR SEE MY WRATH

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 26/05/2010 20:02

You'd have to be smoking crack to see a direct link between the armed forces and killing people.

OnlyWantsOne · 26/05/2010 20:03

wrath away - I shall sit back in interest

muggglewump · 26/05/2010 20:04

I've had a job in the sex industry, and it was the best job I've ever had, really.

No, I didn't have sex (I could have, I chose not to). but I was paid a lot, I was treated amazingly well, honestly, but for me, it was about the money firstly, and the fun, secondly, and it was fun.

I made enough in a week to pay for a two week holiday, I made nothing in a month because I decided I was taking a month off. My choice. I worked when I said.
It was a different country (Australia) so no problem with CV gaps, but I have no regrets at all and I'd do it again if I had my time again.

If someone really wants to have sex for money, and many of the girls I worked with did, then why not, so long as it is a choice.

skihorse · 26/05/2010 20:05

I'm gutted, one of my new friends told me she was in the Navy in catering. Now, via MN I find out she's been slaying pirates across the seven seas.

scottishmummy · 26/05/2010 20:05

escort=strangers getting rocks off and pay you. except the term escort sanitises it with euphimism for prostitution

and undoubtedly someone will rock up and trot out some glam tale of mate/self earning loads money to pay for law degree escorting well heeled busuiness men to business dinners.no gob jobs at all

no one coughs up £200 without expecting kecks off and sex

IWouldNotCouldNotWithAGoat · 26/05/2010 20:06

she's unlikely to be armed though, skihorse. Unless it's with a very heavy ladle.

WombFrootShoot · 26/05/2010 20:08

Damn you OWO. Damn you.

OP - you are now talking in circles, silly circles of contradiction. You're asking us about the morality of it while hoping your daughter has inherited your moral sense - which includes not fucking strangers for cash.

It's sad. Really, really sad that this is the "choice" she is making; but your posts come across as...some kind of advertisement for escorting in today's "economic climate" or something.

I wish I could find the energy to fuck DP, let alone strangers...

skihorse · 26/05/2010 20:12

Doh! That completely passed me by - as part of the "sales patter" I'd have to give out - 90 quid for A-Levels, 50 for O-Levels.

BritFish · 26/05/2010 20:13

hold on, theres no link between being in the army and killing people?
no link at all?

WombFrootShoot · 26/05/2010 20:14

I've got a few GCSE's

whatkatydidathome · 26/05/2010 20:21

I'm saying that my personal moral code includes sex being part of a relationship but I would not impose my standards on someone else - I do not claim to have some divine knowledge of what is absolutely right or wrong. I'm not trying to advertise escorting, I just posted originally partly to explore my feelings about this topic as it is not something that I'd be happy doing but also I can't see what is wrng with any activity between 2 consenting adults.

I guess the key question is whether or not any woman can truely consent to work in the sex industry. I think that my feelings are that they can but am not completely decided on this .
