AIBU Books Game Part Six

MoominMymbleandMy · 26/01/2010 19:16

Now, we're on thread number six!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to think I'm seeing a ghost?

OP posts:
CJCregg · 11/02/2010 21:30

Well done, treacle - he has indeed met an old acquaintance, although to be honest I'm not too worried as he was much closer friends with the brother than the sister. And she's quite up herself, frankly!

MCP ...

SnowWoman · 11/02/2010 21:32

Work does get in the way of this thread sometimes.

...no, I'm not an evacuee, but you could say I live in a place of safety.

steamedtreaclesponge · 12/02/2010 09:11

Hmm... MCP everyone!

...Well, that's the problem - I'm not sure which one I really love! And then there's the other man - I don't love him but I think he'll help advance my career...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 12/02/2010 12:41

Hmm Treacle, are you already secretly married?

...No, I'm a married man! We have such a lot of interests in common...

steamedtreaclesponge · 12/02/2010 13:02

Hmm... you're starting to sound a bit dodgy, Elephants! She's not the daughter of your landlady, by any chance?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 12/02/2010 13:36

Actually treacle she's her adopted daughter, yes. I don't know what you mean by "dodgy" though - she's the odd one out at home and it's nice for her to get away from all those women sometimes.

MoominMymbleandMy · 12/02/2010 17:56

Evening all!

Hmm, budge up and make room in the boat please, because I am definitely drowning here. MCP all!

It is fun having a Marlow addict DD, Pogle, but you could always hook your DS on Patrick O'Brian when he's a bit older.

What was your cruise one, CJ? It's still not ringing any bells even now.

...It's a good thing I'm such a successful author, because I'm sure we'd have the bailiffs into Todefright otherwise...

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 12/02/2010 18:27

Well if you are all going to be in the boat eating dairy milk and drinking, can I come too? I'll bring wine...(might bring cough mixture too - have caught DH's nasty cold type thing,sniff,cough..)

MCP,all!

Pogleswood · 13/02/2010 22:54

Well, thats not what I was expecting yours to be,Moomin! it's on my "to read" list - would you recommend it?

pollywollydoodle · 13/02/2010 22:59

ooh, thats on my to read pile too moomin...any good?

pogle...just bring old-style under the counter benylin....

....he thinks it will be dangerous so soon after the war and that i should think of our daughter...i think it's just for a weekend and it's important

MoominMymbleandMy · 14/02/2010 14:51

Oh dear, still completely adrift here! But I have discovered some Green&Black's in my pocket

I enjoyed it tremendously, Pogle and Polly. It has all sorts of clever subtexts but it is, at the same time, very readable, rather like a verison of the Cazalets in Edwardian times and with more Bohemian tendencies.

MCP all!

AIBU to find a job at the local factory?

OP posts:
CJCregg · 14/02/2010 17:50

Moomin, what was the Edwardian Cazalets?

Working in a factory? Are you under age and risking your life?

MoominMymbleandMy · 14/02/2010 18:00

Swap you for the title of your cruise one, CJ! Mine was The Children's Book by AS Byatt.

...There are lots of accidents but they don't mind my age because children are cheaper to employ. We do really need the money now and I shall be very careful...

OP posts:
SnowWoman · 14/02/2010 18:47

oohh, The Children's Book is on my to be read pile/heap whatever...

Is your name Lyddie, Moomin?

....all my neighbours are much much older than me. I had a friend but she moved away when I was 5.

MCP everyone

MoominMymbleandMy · 14/02/2010 18:57

We must all have bought a copy at the same time, which is probably a triumph for bookshop marketing techniques!

Hmm, your foster parents wouldn't happen to be dead, would they, Snow?

...I'm not called Lyddie, but I am a girl...

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 14/02/2010 19:11

MCP everyone...

...I just don't know if I want to be married at all, really. But he's given me a week to decide. My friend is trying to convince me otherwise but I keep cunningly deflecting her by telling her stories...

SnowWoman · 14/02/2010 19:29

Funny you should say that Moomin, they can be a bit transparent at times!

AIBU to want a pet?

CJCregg · 14/02/2010 21:56

Moomin, do you have to collect the fluff?

Mine was Brideshead, Moomin - Charles Ryder's wife on the Atlantic liner, languishing ill while he dallied with Julia Flyte.

MoominMymbleandMy · 14/02/2010 23:41

Ooh, CJ, how shameful. I did it for O Level! Eek! my age is showing.

...Why yes I am. It would spoil the carpets otherwise...

MCP!

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 15/02/2010 10:09

Brideshead?! Argh! And I don't know what Snow's was...or Moomin's...and stuck on Treacle and polly...

CJCregg · 15/02/2010 11:57

Actually, technically it wasn't really a cruise, more of a crossing, so I'm sorry if I misled anybody there.

Moomin, I know who you are but can't remember your name. Maybe you could start a business collecting cigar ends and making them into new ones?

Pogleswood · 15/02/2010 12:50

Describing it as a crossing wouldn't have made any difference to me - my mind was trying to work on quite differnt lines!

AIBU to think I am being unfairly passed over?

SnowWoman · 15/02/2010 13:29

Pogle, mine was The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. I don't have a clue about any of the others at the moment.

Me and my brother and my friend next door really really want a pet, but all the parents have said no. It's not fair.

MoominMymbleandMy · 15/02/2010 14:07

Pogle, come back! And bring the turtle with you. There's good eating on those things!

Bang on the nose, CJ! I am indeed Anna-Marie Murgatroyd from Joan Aiken's Midnight is a Place.

And I am now as stumped as a stumped thing. MCP!

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 15/02/2010 14:21

Aha - Moomin, I was sure you were a Joan Aiken, but I just couldn't think which one...

No idea on anyone else, MCP!

Pogle, are you being passed over for promotion?

...I suppose he has a right to be angry with me - after all, I did agree to marry him before, and then didn't turn up. Still, I'm not sure that's any excuse for criminal behaviour...
