AIBU Books Game Part Six

MoominMymbleandMy · 26/01/2010 19:16

Now, we're on thread number six!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to think I'm seeing a ghost?

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 15/02/2010 14:59

Treacle, having re-read your posts I do think YAdefinatelyBU! But I still have no idea who you are...

So,Snow do you and your brother and your friend plan do go out and find a pet anyway?

...It is a job I have always wanted - I'm not sure whether you'd call it a promotion though...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 15/02/2010 15:01

For a promotion Pogle?

No idea on yours Treacle but sounds intriguing!

...We have lots of fun with my citroen, she's very mechanically adept.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 15/02/2010 15:06

x-post with Pogle. Well, it sounds like YANBU, do you have a theory as to why you are being overlooked?

Pogleswood · 15/02/2010 15:13

Well,Elephants, it does sound as if you are doing a good thing - and I've always thought that if what you really wanted to do was to own a garage, stage school would be ghastly - might this apply to your friend at all?

...Actually,no - no theories - my work in my present position is good, though I'm not as popular as some of my colleagues - I think popularity can be over-rated ...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 15/02/2010 15:27

Interesting point, Pogle. Yes I think Petrova would agree, and prancing around on stage is not likely to get her name in the history books either.

Well done Wish I had some idea on yours but I just keep thinking of the Office. So, what is it about the dream job that attracts you so much?

Is it possible to lose AIBU Books privileges by virtue of pure stupidity? If so I feel a swift kick off the thread must be on its way...

AIBU to disapprove of my sister's DH?

steamedtreaclesponge · 15/02/2010 15:40

Hmm... are you fed up with being Potions master, Pogle?

...He's just come out of jail after socking a policeman, I'm not surprised he's still cross! Ah well, no time to worry now - I've got a gig this evening and I'm running late...

Pogleswood · 15/02/2010 16:03

Yes,Treacle!I think I'm eminently qualified to teach Defence against the Dark Arts - certainly better qualified than the run of cover teachers Dumbledore has employed so far!
Every post you make confuses me more! Are you a musician then? And why did he sock the policeman?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 15/02/2010 16:04

Ah Treacle you are so right - must be Snape, twas on the tip of my tongue. (waits to be wrong)

SnowWoman · 15/02/2010 16:08

Would you believe it, they've given in, well our Mum and Dad have, not Dad next door, and we're getting a pet!!!

and to miss guessing Snape (shakes head at own lack of brain cells)

steamedtreaclesponge · 15/02/2010 16:18

...He socked the policeman after going on a blinder after I jilted him. And I'm a singer in a nightclub, yes...

CJCregg · 16/02/2010 11:18

Treacle are you in a Martin Amis novel?

Can't believe I missed Snape - bloody half term!

Moomin, thanks for confirming Midnight is a Place - I've been thinking about that one for ages, wanting to do it, but for the life of me I couldn't remember the name of the book. Bizarrely, although I'd forgotten the title, that book has stayed with me far longer than Wolves of Willoughby Chase and others.

Elephants, I feel thick constantly on this thread. On the very rare occasions that I guess one (or even know what people are talking about) it's a short-lived achievement and I'm cast back onto my driftwood again.

AIBU to despair of my fiance?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 16/02/2010 11:42

Thanks CJ

Have you got your pet then Snow?

I hope your fiance isn't sleeping with someone else, CJ?

...I'm worried that this marriage could be the end of her...

SnowWoman · 16/02/2010 15:24

We've got two hamsters now. The man in the shop says they are both girls, which is a shame really as babies would be cute.

steamedtreaclesponge · 16/02/2010 15:29

Is your fiance boring, CJ?

Elephants, do you think your sister's DH is planning to murder her?

...Not Martin Amis, no! Well, it all kicked off tonight - the man who proposed to me and the man I'm slightly obsessed with came to fisticuffs in the Scarlet Peacock nightclub! Now if only I could work out where my friend has gone - the last I saw of her she was heading off in a taxi with a man she only met tonight, the naughty thing...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 16/02/2010 15:47

Google-powered question: do you think she might be needing some fresh air, Treacle, after all she's fitted rather a lot into one day hasn't she?

...Well he's certainly got form. AIBU to stick around in their bedroom to keep an eye on them?

MoominMymbleandMy · 16/02/2010 16:14

Sounds very U on the face of it, Elephants. I can't imagine many DHs taking kindly to a snooping relative in the marital bedroom. No ideas on it though.

As CJ says, every single one of us has felt remarkably stupid several times over on these threads but it doesn't matter a bit. It is still great fun and a super source of books to read (bit expensive though!).

And what a clever Ballet Shoes AIBU. Leaving a little girl to spend her weekends with the lodger does sound very dodgy to modern ears.

Anyone read "The Whicharts", btw? It's Noel Streatfeild's adult version of Ballet Shoes and I am pining for a copy.

Snape! Bah!

Snow, are the hamsters not long for this world?

MCP!

AIBU to think my friend brought it on himself?

OP posts:
MoominMymbleandMy · 16/02/2010 16:27

Ohh! So that's who you are, Treacle! Lovely book. Are you a Persephone addict too then?

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 16/02/2010 16:35

Well done, Elephants! Are you in Shakespeare? Can't think which you might be but you are certainly sounding like some Jacobean farce!

Yes, Moomin, I love Persephone - have a sadly tiny collection at present and am pining for more. They're just such beautiful objects, aside from everything else!

MCP everyone...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 16/02/2010 18:40

Oh goody, is it a good book Treacle? Was thinking of picking it up on amazon.

Thanks Moomin you are very kind I was surgically attached to my copy of Ballet Shoes as a child so The Whicharts sounds fascinating. I always knew Petrova was her favourite. Thank goodness for Mr Simpson though, she was so clever and must have been bored stiff at home.

...Jacobean? Can you be a sorceror that you can see into the future?

...Anyway I stayed in the room as planned and did what my Dsis told me. She's not out of the woods yet but thanks to her unique skills she lives to fight another day...

Pogleswood · 16/02/2010 19:06

The possibilities for feeling like an idiot here are endless,I find! You can't solve other people's AIBUs,or other people can't solve your AIBUs, or (alternatively) other people can solve your AIBUs and do so instantly. That's without mentioning the AIBUs you are still completely bemused by when everyone else on the thread is exchanging witty comments about them Yet here we still are!

You sound a bit fairy tale-ish to me,Elephants - MCP,and to everyone else too!

MoominMymbleandMy · 16/02/2010 19:14

Ooh, Elephants, is your sister a dab hand in the story-telling department?

The Whicharts apparently came first. Then someone suggested NS try her hand at a children's book and she rewrote it. But it has three half sisters, who are all the illegitimate children of the GUM figure and they live with one of his old mistresses, instead of Garnie and Nana! I would love to read it.

And I'm sure you would love Treacle's. It's a very happy book. Actually, there are very few Persephones I don't enjoy, and yes, Treacle, you are so right about their beauty. I always ask for "silver grey books" for birthdays and Christmas.

...I think he did. He should have given it to me...

OP posts:
pollywollydoodle · 16/02/2010 20:44

...well i am feeling as overlooked on this thread as in my marriage...nobody is really interested in me...if only paul was still alive...

nimcp on all others

must confess to never having had a persephone book but they do look gorgeous and (whispers) i have never read ballet shoes...must stop reading thrillers and gore for a bit and immerse myself in AF and some classics

MoominMymbleandMy · 16/02/2010 21:23

Never overlooked, Polly

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 16/02/2010 21:50

Well,Moomin,my gut instinct on yours is that killing people because they won't give you the shiny thing you lust after is very wrong - but I could be way off!!

I am interested in you, polly and have been brooding on Prague in fiction, but with no success! MCP!

MoominMymbleandMy · 16/02/2010 23:12

...But it's my Preciousss...

Well done, Pogle!

MCP and night all!
