AIBU Books Game Part 5

1000 replies

MoominMymbleandMy · 04/10/2009 20:46

Now we've made it to a fifth thread!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to set all my sights on getting a rich husband?

OP posts:
pollywobbledoodle · 13/10/2009 10:49

aibu to think that a house can have too many alberts?

treaclespongeofdeath · 13/10/2009 14:04

NIMCP!

...And she doesn't even seem to like watching the telly...

MoominOnABroomstick · 13/10/2009 15:46

I am completely baffled on everybody's but you have my deepest sympathies if you've been unblocking the loo, Polly.

And that was fast, Treacle! It is a pity, but I suppose I wasn't cut out for being married to a clergyman.

And to return to a very well-worn theme:

AIBU to run away from school?

MoominOnABroomstick · 13/10/2009 15:53

Oops, sorry, Llandb, the book of fairytales one was The Forgotten Garden by Kate Moreton, and you would do well to forget it.

treaclespongeofdeath · 13/10/2009 16:09

No, Moomin, I suspect you would have made a highly unsuitable wife for him!

MCP everyone!

...Oh well, now she's at school I expect she'll straighten up. I hear the headmistress is a real disciplinarian...

MoominOnABroomstick · 13/10/2009 17:26

I keep thinking I ought to know yours, Treacle, but I'm still utterly stumped on all of them.

...I never wanted to come here. My parents sent me because they were going to Kenya, and the Colonial Office was prepared to help with the fees...

Pogleswood · 13/10/2009 20:50

Sidles sheepishly back on to thread, after enforced absence due to computer breakdown, and extreme tiredness...
Hello everyone!
Will your daughter be taught by the headmistress,Treacle? I hear one of the teachers is a real honey, and not strict at all...

pollywobbledoodle · 13/10/2009 21:08

hello pogle

my little brother is called albert and he only knows one word....fish

nimcp!

MoominOnABroomstick · 13/10/2009 21:13

Hooray, Pogle! Lovely to have you back again. I'm glad you know at least one of the current crop of AIBUs because I am clueless.

...I haven't got any real friends and some people think I've been stealing from them...

Pogleswood · 13/10/2009 22:09

Hi Moomin! Sadly that's all the inspiration I have ,and I may be wrong..

dangheckskuLLANDBone · 13/10/2009 22:25

Staggers wild-eyed back onto thread, having been caught unawares on the telephone by an Aunt... (in fairness to aunts everywhere, not all of mine are Bertie Wooster-stylee)

Wave at CJ and Pol!

Um, polly, ...

Well, the timing is right for slavery but I don't think it featues here. I'm more for doing away with public hangings. Good move, that. Because just this once, someone told me, 'do,' not 'don't'!

NIMCPPP (pretty please)?

CJCregg · 13/10/2009 22:33

Hi all, sorry for extended absences but I've been awfully stuck for ages and just couldn't come up with even a feeble guess ... nothing's changed!

My AIBU that nobody got was Temples of Delight by Barbara Trapido. God I love that book. But haven't read it for ages so was probably a bit stumped for suitable clues.

So, throwing myself energetically back into the fray, WIBU to taste the trifle?

dangheckskuLLANDBone · 13/10/2009 22:43

Not sure, CJ, but I can tell you that from RL that you should never use tasting as a gauge of whether there is sufficient sherry if it is done under the influence of a heavy cold

Is it a trifle you have made yourself? And is there any parallel with my RL trifle experience?

('Night, all!)

MoominOnABroomstick · 13/10/2009 23:02

I have made a mental note of Temples of Delight, CJ, but that seems to be all the cerebral activity going on here at the moment.

However, The Cricket Term arrived this morning and I have had such a lovely wallow. What a prize twerp Lawrie is.

Not another auntie, Llandb, or is this a repeater?

NIMC please!

...And when the biology teacher called me "a nasty, dirty over-sexed little girl" it was the last straw...

Poledra · 13/10/2009 23:28

Evening all

Moomin, yours does not sound like any school story I have ever read - v v dodgy!

No idea on any of the others either (got Moomin's Mary Crawford but only after Treacle - gah!).

BTW, thank you for your kind welcome back. DDs have been much more lurgy-free over the last months or so, thank god!

MoominOnABroomstick · 13/10/2009 23:42

Ah well, you see Pol, it's more a school novel than a school story. But well worth reading.

And good to hear you're plague-free .

...Just because I asked her if she'd seen the gardener's boy. I was only worried because no one had given the pets their food and water...

treaclespongeofdeath · 14/10/2009 10:58

Everyone's back! Hooray! Lovely to see you all. And well done Pogle.

Completely stuck on everyone else's. NIMCP!

AIBU to consider marrying for money?

Poledra · 14/10/2009 11:52

So what was it Treacle? I feel i should know....... (but then, I so often feel like that but never quite manage to get there!).

dangheckskuLLANDBone · 14/10/2009 11:57

Hello Pogle and Pol, sounds as though you're being reasonable! (Meant to wave at pogle, not pol, but wave to both
)

CJ, I suspected you of cooking with anodyne liniment, but that was a cake!, so MCP?

Oh dear polly, my cheating efforts have come up with icky stuff but no books, so MCP?

Treacle, MCP?

Moomin, I don't know what yours is but it sounds as though you're much nicer than your biology teacher and I hope the pets and gardener's boy are ok. Any chance that teach knows more about the lad's disappearance, and you will unmask a scandal?

Um, well, generally nincompoop....

.... and there's a moustachioed blackmailing polygamist dashing about....

treaclespongeofdeath · 14/10/2009 12:05

Mine was Matilda, Pol!

Oh dear, totally stumped on everyone else's. They all sound quite exciting though!

...He's not exactly a looker, but there is something about him...

dangheckskuLLANDBone · 14/10/2009 12:09

Something other than the dosh, Treacle?
Is he much older and very kind, and are you a French governess?

treaclespongeofdeath · 14/10/2009 12:16

No- but what is that? It sounds familiar...

...And then there's that ward of his - what a brat...

dangheckskuLLANDBone · 14/10/2009 12:22

In fact, the French governess who marries the much older, very kind man for his money, is in mine! So I thought p'raps we wuz doing the same one!

And she is being blackmailed by the moustachioed polygamist villian (in fact, she's being blackmailed by pretty dangheckskullandboned-much everyone!)

Hmmm, are you an English governess (though I don't recall brattishness in t'ward). Or a governess at all at all?

MoominOnABroomstick · 14/10/2009 12:29

Ohh! Matilda!

Llandb, is there a woman in white floating about too?

CJ, was it a case of the maker of the trifle being U rather than the taster?

NIMC please!

No dead bodies in my one, just some scandal.

...Everything is at sixes and sevens with the polio outbreak...

treaclespongeofdeath · 14/10/2009 12:32

...No, I'm not a governess, although there is one of them around here somewhere - mousy little thing...

Can't think what yours can be, it sounds great! Nothing like a bit of moustache to brighten my day...
