AIBU Books Game Part 5

1000 replies

MoominMymbleandMy · 04/10/2009 20:46

Now we've made it to a fifth thread!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to set all my sights on getting a rich husband?

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 14/01/2010 17:12

I think your employer might have an opinion on that,Elephants! I discovered this book last year and I love it ,though I feel a bit embarrassed to admit it - it's just so positive and nice !

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 14/01/2010 17:49

Ah well done Pogle! Yes he seems quite adamant that I keep it for some reason!

Don't be ashamed, i love her writing and somehow she manages to do really nice characters without making them insipid or loathsome.

Right, AIBU to think that pie-making is a good steady job for a young woman?

Pogleswood · 14/01/2010 18:03

Well, cooking is always needed, isn't it - I suppose it depends what the alternatives are.And how good the young woman in question is at making pies.
MCP!

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 14/01/2010 18:07

My attitude exactly Pogle, much better than this flouncing around just being stared at by men. At least she's pretty safe round her, these guys just think of their stomachs.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 14/01/2010 18:08

oh and MCP from everyone else!

Pogleswood · 14/01/2010 18:15

I might be wrong of course, but what if she is happier flouncing around being stared at by men? (Are you sure they are men,by the way?)

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 15/01/2010 09:35

Well, they've got beards... it's hard to tell in the city these days!

Poledra · 15/01/2010 09:49

Elephants, are you in Ankh-Morpok? Though if you are, I have no idea which character you are - must be one I haven't read.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 15/01/2010 10:34

Yes indeed Pol! It's recent.

My previous one was The Secret Countess by Eva Ibbotson btw.

steamedtreaclesponge · 15/01/2010 10:42

Ooh, this thread has suddenly moved on very quickly!

Pie-making is indeed a good steady job, Elephants - especially for people with the stomach capacities of your employers. Mind you guard that Ploughman's recipe carefully though!

...Don't know about nature, but I think I might be in danger of my life - my father is definitely deranged...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 15/01/2010 11:02

Ah well done Treacle!! I am indeed Glenda Sugarbean, pie-maker extraordinaire, from Unseen Academicals.

Is your cousin going with you?

steamedtreaclesponge · 15/01/2010 14:36

...No, she'll have to go back. She's not as closely related to all the badness as I am. I'll have to start a new life somewhere far away - very far away...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 15/01/2010 15:37

Are you wanted for murder, Treacle? Are you thinking about travelling in discguise?

Pogleswood · 16/01/2010 10:36

Hmm,still stuck here.Are you royal,Treacle?
deranged homicidal fathers often seem to be higher up the social scale..

llandb,if you are out there - I'm still keen to know who your ghostly family are!

CJCregg · 16/01/2010 11:38

Treacle, are you Shakespearean?! Totally stuck otherwise.

Well, the zoo trip was a disaster. Not only did she ignore me AGAIN, but I got in with a very dodgy crowd. Next time she suggests a trip I'm simply NOT GOING.

Pogleswood · 16/01/2010 16:43

I am only posting to say, please, more clues...
Yours sounds as if it should be blatantly obvious by now,CJ,but sadly it isn't!

CJCregg · 16/01/2010 16:58

I know - and the really sad thing is, I think I've done it before ... I'm starting to think maybe we could bend the rules slightly and have the odd play?

steamedtreaclesponge · 16/01/2010 17:35

Hmm... sorry CJ, stumped here too!

I think plays should be acceptable - they're still in books, after all

...not royal, but very well off. We have a family business that's brought us lots of money! But my brother's started to get involved now too, I really think he's evil...

Pogleswood · 16/01/2010 18:17

So,CJ,all we need to do is re-read all the threads??

I think plays should be acceptable but it'd be down to you to solve them! Actually I think anything with a story should be ok - we've done fairy stories, nursery rhymes, poems and legends after all, haven't we?

CJCregg · 16/01/2010 19:59

Yeah, Pogle - just whip back through nearly 5,000 posts, shouldn't take you long!

We don't have to do plays, it's just that I seem to have worn my bookshelves (and brain) out - every time I go to scan them for ideas they've all been done before.

I don't know that many plays, anyway!

Oh, good Lord - now she's talking about a trip to the seaside. How can I get out of it?

Pogleswood · 17/01/2010 00:36

Ho ho!

You're not Teddy Robinson, are you? (my data bank of stuffed heroes is distinctly limited!)

And I get the same feeling looking at my bookshelves...

llandb · 17/01/2010 00:43

Hello everyone! Sorry to run off mid-AIBU, caught unwares by lurgeys and aunts and such

Belated hello to Pol and hello to Tortoise (or was it Turtle? -sorry, several minutes since I skimmed studied the latest pages) and to Elephants!

Not a hope of getting my head around any of yours.
... if only my DS could go to school with the little boy who's just moved in! They're about the same age - Grade 3, /i think...

Pogleswood · 17/01/2010 13:55

llandb! Glad you are back - yours is driving me mad, more clues please!
(are you aunt and lurgy free again? presumably the aunts are good and the lurgy is bad?)

llandb · 17/01/2010 14:16

Hello Pogle! Yes, free of both (the aunt was good but short-notice!)

Oh, how nice, we've made contact with the family and they've taken it quite well that they're sharing their house with a family of ghosts. They seem to think my DSs could go to school with their DS! Now which shall I send - Mortimer or Wilbur?

(Will ask for MCP when caught up! )

pollywollydoodle · 17/01/2010 21:01

i can't keep up with the reading of this thread but is yours the ghosts who went to school llandb.....can't remember the bit about the gravy tho', if it is the same one
