AIBU Books Game Part 5

1000 replies

MoominMymbleandMy · 04/10/2009 20:46

Now we've made it to a fifth thread!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to set all my sights on getting a rich husband?

Evening all,

I have nothing to say, just wanted to use the thrilling new emoticon

MoominPlotsTreason · 04/11/2009 18:57

Hmm, because I am thoroughly perplexed. MCP, Treacle and Llandb.

What about GunpowderTreacleandPlot, Treacle?

I've not heard of your one, CJ, but I shall definitely make a note of it. Btw, Jane's Adventures was a huge hit with DD when we were in the Cotswolds.

...It's very strange. The locals seem pleasant but when they realise why I'm here they all fall silent...

gunpowdertreacleandplot · 05/11/2009 10:14

Good one, Moomin! Has she left robots or dogs as bequests?

MCP!

...it's such a shame that the house is going to rack and ruin - Hundreds Hall was such a beautiful place before the war...

squaLLANDBonfire · 05/11/2009 11:26

Morning, All!

Ah, treacle, thanks for the googlable clue - is there a little stranger involved?

... those pesky children looked delicious. I hadn't expected them to rescued!...

MCP!

MoominPlotsTreason · 05/11/2009 11:59

Ah, might your one involve a reptile, Llandb?

Glad you liked it, Treacle. I haven't read your one yet. What do you think of it? I was a bit disappointed by the last one.

...No interesting bequests. Just a lonely old house surrounded by marshes which can only be reached by a causeway when the tides are right...

gunpowdertreacleandplot · 05/11/2009 12:19

Well done llandb! What was yours?

I'm actually only half way through at the moment, Moomin - it's too scary to read when there's no-one else around so it's taking me a little while to finish! Am enjoying it so far though.

MCP!

AIBU to wish the children would stop playing the piano?

squaLLANDBonfire · 05/11/2009 16:38

Well, not exactly a reptile, but there was a big fish... of the shark variety... he had to off to a specialist hospital though...

squaLLANDBonfire · 05/11/2009 17:48

Whoosh, bang, everyone!

(Oops, already done this one, haven't I? But as a different character...)

NIMCP!

squaLLANDBonfire · 05/11/2009 22:40

Nah, treacle, all the talent is on your part for providing such googlable clues (haven't even read it).

Still going on mine - are you morphing into me with merging threads?

Moomin, yours sounds familiar but mebbe that's just because every proper adventure has a floodable causeway! Are there wolves? (Fishing wildly)

Everybody, NIMCP and

...it was a very specific hospital just for that part of the anatomy of that particular creature.

But that's by the by. My guard was distracted through embarrasment and he had to run off to a very specific country just for people with no trousers! (I have no idea why he had no durps)

'Night, all. Are we still being scary after today?

MoominPlotsTreason · 05/11/2009 22:51

You're not being Badjelly again, are you, Llandb? I don't remember any fish but everything else fits.

Treacle, MCP!

...I would welcome a wolf out on these marshes. What a lonely life she must have led. Her land agent and I were the only two mourners at the funeral, apart from that very ill-looking young woman in heavy mourning who slipped in halfway through. I wonder who she was...

gunpowdertreacleandplot · 06/11/2009 10:09

...I wouldn't mind, but why play it in the middle of the night? And I don't know why they want to study Latin, since it's the holidays...

Completely lost on everyone else's!

squaLLANDBonfire · 06/11/2009 13:37

Morning 'Afternoon, All!

Yay, Moomin, chandeliers on a broomstick to ye! (History does not note whether Badjelly's knickers, knickers, knickers were made of lycra )

Er, I've only heard the record and not read the book so perhaps there is no shark to be bopped on the nose by Dinglemouse (necessitating a quick-smart trip to sharks' nose hospital)

AIBU to open the window?

NIMCP!

MoominPlotsTreason · 06/11/2009 15:35

Ah, Treacle, a spot of trouble with a ghostly governess, perchance. Don't worry, they'll never have problems remembering the dates of the Kings and Queens of England.

Llandb, we have the book and a videotape of Badjelly, but I never knew there was a record - mind you, we don't have a record player so all the hits of yesteryear are gathering dust in the loft.

And YABU if it's freezing but YANBU if you're going to be sick out of it, so another clue or two, please. No harm in continuing to be scary if you want.

...But when I mentioned the young woman to Mr Jerome I thought he was going to collapse...

CJCregg · 06/11/2009 16:54

Moomin, you are Mr Kipps and I claim my £5.

MoominPlotsTreason · 06/11/2009 19:04

Bang on the nose, CJ! We gave a copy of this to my FIL some years ago, and he took it away for some bedtime holiday reading in a 200-year-old creaky cottage in lonely countryside that was filled with spookily shrieking wildlife. Oddly, enough, he had some trouble sleeping that night.

AIBU to air my knowledge of history?

squaLLANDBonfire · 06/11/2009 21:34

What were yours, Treacle and Moomin? (Just so I know to wait until I'm in a sunny, crowded piazza before taking a peek)

Er, well, Moomin, I haven't listened to Badjelly for several decades - back when people actually had record players!

...It was to allow someone's soul to escape. But I fear I left it too late. I hope it's not true that she'll be trapped in limbo...

MCP

squaLLANDBonfire · 06/11/2009 21:46

Cor blimey. A google for badjelly and shark has few hits. And disproporionately many of those are from a certain small country where the particular record I'd have listened to would have been procured.

I wonder whether we got our very own shark-infested edition?

squaLLANDBonfire · 06/11/2009 22:01

And I think shark had a West Country accent (Bill Bailey does hobbit and gollum stylee)

MoominPlotsTreason · 06/11/2009 22:28

No, Llandb, I beg your pardon, there is a shark in the book, just not on the video. I've just checked with DD.

My one was The Woman in Black by Susan Hill, and it is spine chilling! But very, very good.

Now, your one is sounding nigglingly familiar. And I have such a bad record on the ones that sound nigglingly familiar.

MCP!

...I didn't think I was. It was just an old story to me. How was I to know it was going to land us in all this trouble...

gunpowdertreacleandplot · 07/11/2009 10:46

Well done, Moomin! Llandb, mine was a short story by Joan Aiken from All But a Few - one of my favourite books, I think.

MCP!

Pogleswood · 07/11/2009 11:44

Have been lurking due to total lack of inspiration - but I'm glad I didn't recognise The Woman in Black, which I found absolutely petrifying, and which gave me nightmares!

However I think,Moomin, you may have been remembering the 5th of November, when you really shouldn't have known about it? Not a good idea to know about gunpowder, treason and plot before they happen...

MCP about the window llandb!

squaLLANDBonfire · 07/11/2009 14:26
squaLLANDBonfire · 07/11/2009 14:31

Ooh, glad to lose one piece of evidence that I have gone potty - but slightly disappointed that there are not multiple versions of Badjelly (I was hoping the British one would have a pirate)

Pogleswood · 07/11/2009 14:36

Hmmm - MCP! And who/what on earth is Badjelly?

MoominPlotsTreason · 07/11/2009 15:07

Have a toffee apple, Pogle! I couldn't let Bonfire Night pass without one Gunpowder Plot AIBU.

Badjelly the Witch was written and illustrated by Spike Milligan and is very funny and anarchic, unsurprisingly.

NIMCP on your one, Llandb, but it sounds intriguing.

AIBU to whistle?
