AIBU Books Game Part 5

1000 replies

MoominMymbleandMy · 04/10/2009 20:46

Now we've made it to a fifth thread!

As before, we frame an AIBU from the point of view of a character in a book and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please.

New thread, new AIBU...

AIBU to set all my sights on getting a rich husband?

OP posts:

Had to google, Moomin, sorry ... didn't even pick up the Rye clue, doh. You are Hester Ward, and that looks like a very creepy story indeed.

I've just got together with an old love of mine. He's big trouble, but I can't resist him. I just don't want him to die. I wonder if my two aunts could give me any advice?

pollywobbledoodle · 02/11/2009 09:56

halloween aunts cj

moomin, when i was 16, dennis wheatley seemed very risque...not sure it would stand the test of time tbh

MoominOnABroomstick · 02/11/2009 12:39

Afternoon all!

CJ, your one is turning into one of those irritating, tantalising ones that niggle away all day because they remind you of something you simply can't place. Only, when I do remember, it generally turns out to be the wrong book anyway.

Well done on The Face. One of the most hauntingly creepy stories I've ever read and definitely not to be read at night.

...AIBU to go sight-seeing instead of straight home?

pollywobbledoodle · 02/11/2009 12:59

if you will be going round
a)a castle
b)a candlelit stately home
c)an antiques shop

or your surname is smith, then moomin, YABVU [hgrin]

treaclespongeofdeath · 02/11/2009 13:03

Are you going to see the elephant, Moomin?

Hello everyone!

AIBU to break a promise?

CJCregg · 02/11/2009 13:05

Moomin, are you in Rome?

(No idea what anyone else is talking about, by the way)

MoominOnABroomstick · 02/11/2009 13:59

Aw, mean old MN is not celebrating Witch Week after all.

It sounds very U on the face of it, Treacle, but no doubt you have reasons. More details please, so we can decide on the U-ness.

CJ, umm, help!

...I am in Italy and I am planning to cross another old building off my list before heading home to my flat and my DH...

CJCregg · 02/11/2009 14:52

Uh-oh - I knew we were cursed. I've killed my boyfriend - it was an accident, honest, but what should I do now? Maybe my sister in Long Island can help? I know she's really busy bringing up her girls on her own, but she is my sister, no matter how much we've fallen out.

treaclespongeofdeath · 02/11/2009 14:55

NIMCP! Am very behind on everyone's...

...He'll be furious with me for telling his family, but I think it's for the best...

MoominOnABroomstick · 03/11/2009 00:05

Blimey, CJ! Whatever was niggling is most certainly not this!

NIMCP!

...It won't take that long to climb 470 steps and I'm sure the view will be wonderful. I'll probably be able to see Florence from the top...

pollywobbledoodle · 03/11/2009 10:02

moomin are you the gwyneth paltrow character out of talented mr ripley?

CJCregg · 03/11/2009 10:16

I'm taking Jimmy's body to my sister's. She'll know what to do. We didn't grow up with aunts like those two without learning a thing or two ..

treaclespongeofdeath · 03/11/2009 11:34

Ooh, would this be a tower, Moomin? Better take care when you get to the top, you wouldn't want to fall off...

NIMCP everyone else!

...I think his problems from the war must be cropping up again, poor fellow - after all, that story couldn't be true...

CJCregg · 03/11/2009 12:44

I have deduced - I think - that Moomin is climbing the tower of the Duomo, but I can't get any further than that ...

We're going to bury Jimmy in the garden. Hope it doesn't adversely affect the tomato plants.

MoominOnABroomstick · 03/11/2009 15:13

Afternoon all.

I've still no idea what your one is, CJ, but I think it will probably do the tomato plants a world of good - lots of nitrogen!

MCP all!

And well done, Treacle, it was The Tower I was climbing. Fabulously scary!

...AIBU to insist on finishing this commission?

treaclespongeofdeath · 03/11/2009 15:22

Yay! Who wrote it, Moomin, can you remember? I have it in a collection of short stories but I haven't read it in a while (mostly because it's terrifying...)

MCP everyone else!

...after all, that incident with the dog couldn't have been his fault...

MoominOnABroomstick · 03/11/2009 16:49

Isn't it just, Treacle! It's by Marghanita Laski and not to be read by anyone with a phobia about heights.

Ho hum, I am so stumped at the moment. MCP all!

...I thought it would be such a simple task. Just representing the firm at an old woman's funeral and sorting out her papers...

dangskuLLANDBoneym · 03/11/2009 21:59

Crikey, I'm having no end of techie trouble with MN (including an own-fault loss of just-typed post!)

Anyway - CJ, glad you had good hol, hpoe you picked suitable scarf, and not too late to change name as it's still witch week

Oh and as long as you can get your aunts to transfer those blue stones or tiles to the new garden, the ghost will stop bothering you. And your sister will get on fine with the cop who is searching for you. Warn your niece to trust her visions though.

(Yay, because I have been stumped as a tree for pages and pages and pages, ever since mixing up someone's view of Firenze with the one about an avocado-loving baby)

AIBU to want a hearty breakfast?

CJCregg · 03/11/2009 23:48

Well done, llandb - lovely book, shame about the film!

Have you been up all night?

pollywobbledoodle · 04/11/2009 01:47

well cj am none the wiser, what was yours?

llandb, is it to be your last meal?

treaclespongeofdeath · 04/11/2009 10:12

Morning all! NIMCP - am being very dense at the moment and need more clues

...and evil spirits certainly don't exist. The dog biting was unfortunate though, that poor girl will be scarred for life...

treaclespongeofdeath · 04/11/2009 10:19

Oh, and on a completely unrelated note, I'm feeling the need for a Guy Fawkes' name change but I can't think of anything - any ideas?

dangskuLLANDBoneym · 04/11/2009 13:20

How about treaclespongeofgunpowder? (Sorry, best can think of )

CJ, I'm ashamed to admit that although I remember reading yours (my mother gave me the book, with a warning not to bother with the film ), I can't for the life of me remember what it's called or who wrote it. Even though I went and reminded myself by google! (Does that count as cheating?)

As for me, I don't think my state of nighttime alertness is recorded. But if I did sleep then I must be an early riser, for I planned to breakfast at dawn. It wasn't supposed to be my last meal, but as it turns out, I didn't get any breakfast and I'll never eat another....

NIMCP, everyone!

CJCregg · 04/11/2009 14:06

It was Practical Magic, by Alice Hoffman. (See? Halloween theme!) One of my favourite writers, until she got all gloomy and depressing in the last five years or so. But her early stuff is just wonderful.

NIMCP.

squaLLANDBonfire · 04/11/2009 15:16

...and I wasn't expecting to have to exercise so early in the morning. And I'm afraid I used some bad language...
