PIP isn't fit for purpose

1000 replies

Ljcrow · 14/10/2026 09:01

I made this comment on another thread and thought I'd start a separate thread purely on this topic. This is all from my own personal experience rather than from reading/hearing anything, I'm only going off what I see day to day.
The people I know who claim PIP do not need it financially. One works full time and earns more than me (and I'm not at imminent risk of homelessness or starvation) and the young people I know literally tell me things like their PIP's come in so they're off to get a new tattoo, which they then do. They appear to have much more disposable income than me.
These are all people who can function in society by the way and as far as I can see, all PIP does is give them extra spending money, which I'm sure we'd all like.

I'm aware this won't be the case for everyone who recieves PIP but it is for the people I come into regular contact with. Which is why it needs reloooking at so it only goes to those who actually need the money for a specific purpose related to their disability.

We're not in a position as a society where we can afford to give people money who do not actually need it.
Things like this should be means tested, both in terms of whether people have enough income to live a decent life without additional benefits and in terms of what the money is actually going to be used for.
PIP is not fit for purpose and needs scrapping or totally changing.

Gosh how unusual that someone on MN has benefit claimants tell them exactly what they spend their money on, extra points that all of the many many people you know who claim PIP dont seem to be disabled at all.

Everley · 14/10/2026 09:07

Just to give you another point of view, I receive PIP and it absolutely goes towards genuine expenses - medication & food mainly. If I didn’t get PIP I’d really struggle, financially.

All these people you "know" dropping in money. PiP isn't an out of work benefit people are "allowed " to work and claim pip, and if they have been awarded the benefit which isn't as easy as you think, then they are entitled to it.

It is non of your bussiness how people use their money just because you are a "tax payer" doesn't give you as an individual to pry and be intrusive in how disabled people spend their money. I know you insist you are entitled but you are not,

You are going to get lots of support on your thread that will leave you gleeful that you are right but you are not.

Totally open to hearing other points of view and I'm glad it helps you. 🤗

And FYI it will always be non means tested as its there to help with extra costs of disability. Im sure that person said that about the tattoo, sounds totally legit.. not.

You don't have to justify yourself.

Okay. It's true though. And I wasn't aware there'd been a load of posts of this nature already. 🤷‍♀️
I'm open to hearing other perspectives and accept I could have it wrong. This is just how I feel from working where I work and seeing what I see.

Yes this is why people are trying to get the law changed. Its illegal to comment on race etc so now people are trying to get disability included due to hate articles in the news spurring on threads like this.

Of course your aware, it's posted near enough every day someone wanting to have a go at the less fortunate. People cannot help being disabled.

@Ljcrow it's to early in the day for this nonsense.

It's 100% true but I obviously can't prove it. Work a day where I work and you'd see and hear it for yourself.

I'll bet it is definitely true.

Theres nothing more that benefit claimants love than to divulge their exact finances to the nearest person, who then seems to come straight to MN to tell everyone.

Every poster who comes here says the exact same thing. I heard this about a pip claimant it's true but I cannot actually prove it. Just lies to fuel the hate. People like you are just miserable and need to stop with this now. Its getting out of hand targeting the disabled.

Honestly, I'm off work sick so spending time on mumsnet where I wouldn't usually. I wasn't aware. I am genuine. I understand my opinion may upset you but it's my opinion nonetheless.

I also know someone who gets PIP for their child and then doesn’t spend it on anything to help the child - who does have genuine issues and would benefit from extra therapies etc.

People should have to provide receipts.

I don't hate the disabled, I think PIP is given out too freely to people who don't necessarily need it. I've been told I could claim PIP myself but as I can manage financially, I won't.

Of course it is, you sound like exactly the kind of person who would be great working with young disabled people.

Glad your using your sick day wisely.
