PIP isn't fit for purpose

1000 replies

Ljcrow · 14/10/2026 09:01

I made this comment on another thread and thought I'd start a separate thread purely on this topic. This is all from my own personal experience rather than from reading/hearing anything, I'm only going off what I see day to day.
The people I know who claim PIP do not need it financially. One works full time and earns more than me (and I'm not at imminent risk of homelessness or starvation) and the young people I know literally tell me things like their PIP's come in so they're off to get a new tattoo, which they then do. They appear to have much more disposable income than me.
These are all people who can function in society by the way and as far as I can see, all PIP does is give them extra spending money, which I'm sure we'd all like.

I'm aware this won't be the case for everyone who recieves PIP but it is for the people I come into regular contact with. Which is why it needs reloooking at so it only goes to those who actually need the money for a specific purpose related to their disability.

We're not in a position as a society where we can afford to give people money who do not actually need it.
Things like this should be means tested, both in terms of whether people have enough income to live a decent life without additional benefits and in terms of what the money is actually going to be used for.
PIP is not fit for purpose and needs scrapping or totally changing.

No they do not. That's universal credit.

You are right they don't i edited it, so it isn't in my post anymore,

Dontcallmescarface · 14/10/2026 09:17

You do realise that the majority of people who work and receive PIP will be paying more in tax than they get in PIP. Something these PIP bashing threads fail to grasp.

OhMyGodSusan · 14/10/2026 09:18

Ljcrow · 14/10/2026 09:16

I don't hate the disabled, I think PIP is given out too freely to people who don't necessarily need it. I've been told I could claim PIP myself but as I can manage financially, I won't.

Christ this is like word for word like every other bashing thread. They also claim the same thing. 🤣 Honestly op just stop. If you think its believable people come to you and tell you what they send their disability on you must not be all there.

Just to give you another point of view, I receive PIP and it absolutely goes towards genuine expenses - medication & food mainly. If I didn’t get PIP I’d really struggle, financially.

Me too

Merrybandofpirates · 14/10/2026 09:19

This is like when men say their ex is spending their child maintenance on hair and nailed because she went to the hairdresser.

No.

People who get PiP are still allowed to spend their money anyway they want, they don’t have to have absolutely nothing left after paying for disability related things. If their salary comes in and they pay their usual bills including anything in disability related, like therapy or taxi costs to get out, or equipment maintenance’s or literally anything that eases the effects of their disability then later their PiP comes in and they get a tattoo… they’ve still spent their pip on disability needs. Do you understand that?

You seem to think that people on pip must only have the absolute bare minimum to survive with nothing left over for just normal stuff people spend their own money on. Just like a deadbeat dad who thinks his ex should spend every penny of her money on the kids and have nothing for herself, otherwise she is spending his money on herself.

The money is to help with extra costs caused by disability, so they have the same disposable income as someone in the same position without the disability. It all goes into one pot and they can spend their money as they like.

Your argument is just stupid - genuinely, it is stupid. You’ve no ability to actually think.

socialbatteryisdead · 14/10/2026 09:19

People always accuse anyone who slightly questions benefits as benefits bashing.
It is completely naive to think some claimants don’t lie to get extra benefits.
I know of a woman who lives with her partner but claims she doesn’t.
A colleague at work actually told me last week he and his partner (who doesn’t work) would be better off on benefits and he knows every detail of what they can claim.
Im absolutely not targeting the disabled. I’ve applied for benefits myself for a family member who didn’t realise what they were entitled to.

OhMyGodSusan · 14/10/2026 09:20

I'm disabled. I have a life limiting disease. I spent my pip on a bag of chocolate buttons the other day, I must not need pip and magically cured - hooray. Honestly what has it got to do with you.

keepingitclean · 14/10/2026 09:20

The biggest problem with PIP is too many people have an opinion on it while also knowing jack shit about it. People are vile and think you cannot possibly be disabled if you earn decent or have a comfortable life. People think you are a fraudster if you qualify based on their own idea of who should get PIP, rather than the actual criteria.

I think you are 100% correct when you say PIP is not fit for purpose but not for the reasons you give. It’s not fit for purpose based on the disabled persons experience, not your high horse opinion.

You'll be accused of fabricating this entire scenario now.

Any system of benefits that uses illness categories as the qualifying conditions is open to abuse. And all systems of assessment arte imperfect.

We can all get rightly angry at the abusers, but that must not let us lose sight of the godsend that this is to the genuinely disabled who incur extra expenses because of their disability and for whom PIP is a lifeline.

I have a distant relative who gets PIP on the grounds of high functioning autism - they spend it on their drug habit because their living expenses and accommodation are covered by their family. They absolutely meet the criteria, but they do not need the money and it is just feeding their habit.

Every such system is imperfect.

As a member of society I'm entitled to comment on what taxpayer money goes toward, as are you.

That's completely different though. That's a couple claiming fraudulently as a single claim nothing to do with pip. Pip fraud is incredibly low. People seem to think you can make up x, y and z and be magically awarded pip. It doesn't work like that. Thats why people get pissed off with these threads.

But for every "friend" or "neighbour" you know that is "falsely claiming" then there will be people who do not lie, also why are you talking about your neighbour claiming while living with a partner ?
We are specifically talking about PIP

What have I said that demonstrates hate towards the disabled? Please quote me.
I absolutely think and have stated very clearly that those who need benefits should get them.

I think the problem here is that you think you have the right to be deciding who you think needs them. You don’t.

But you are saying people who work and live a life and spend money from their benefits don't deserve, because they are working and spending money and I imagine you think "appear healthy.

PIP doesn’t use ‘illness categories’ though.

No, I think that the government needs to re look at the criteria and look at means testing it.

“I don’t hate the disabled” - are you sure?

”I think PIP is given out to freely” - hilarious

All benefits have some % of claimants who are playing the system but it is a well known fact that PIP has one of the lowest rates for this. Go and educate yourself rather than spouting goady nonsense.

Theunamedcat · 14/10/2026 09:28

Katie price claimed for Harvey she has had millions on and off but would you say Harvey isnt disabled?

Boomer55 · 14/10/2026 09:29

Greenfishy · 14/10/2026 09:15

I also know someone who gets PIP for their child and then doesn’t spend it on anything to help the child - who does have genuine issues and would benefit from extra therapies etc.

People should have to provide receipts.

But, do you also want receipts about how people use their child benefit, or child element of UC? Or is it just disabled people that you think should have to prove what they spend their money on? 🤷‍♀️
