People having cornflakes in hotels abroad

Oblongtriangle · Today 07:04

I have stayed in many hotels across Europe. Why do many British people have cornflakes for breakfast? The most boring breakfast.
I have different things to what I have at home

Why do you care what others eat?

EmpressaurusKitty · Today 07:05

Because they like cornflakes? You’re sounding rather judgy.

TeenToTwenties · Today 07:06

Because some people are different from you and like a predictable breakfast?

hethor · Today 07:07

I guess they like cornflakes.

But if the hotel breakfast is better than what you have at home, why not change what you have at home?

McSpoot · Today 07:07

Do you want a prize?

Tiddlywinks63 · Today 07:08

Dear god, who on earth cares what someone on holiday has for breakfast?

Coconutter24 · Today 07:08

Maybe they don’t have cornflakes at home so they want something different. Maybe they’re not big eaters or don’t really bother with breakfast so want something simple. Maybe they’re just like them 🤷‍♀️
Why does it bother you what’s in other peoples bowls?

PenelopeTheShroudWeaver · Today 07:08

I sometimes have cornflakes because i never buy them at home, and I might fancy them as a one-off if I see them on a breakfast buffet.
Is that OK with you?

AgentKim · Today 07:09

If im on holiday I have the lot, cornflakes, then bacon, eggs, beans, toast, fruit juice and toast and jam or marmalade. I love it because I wouldn't have that at home and it sets me up for the rest of my day until evening wish I were on me Hols now!

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · Today 07:09

It's very common for people to want familiar food for breakfast. It's not specific to British people.

Lumpyteats · Today 07:10

Well I never eat cornflakes at home so it would be quite a novelty for me.

I don't eat them in hotels either but my (now grown) kids would've - sweet cereals I don't buy were a holiday tradition for them. Then they'd go on to eat everything else in the buffet.

rwalker · Today 07:10

I have them because the bacon ,sausage and cold meats are questionable
don’t like sweet pastries

TorroFerney · Today 07:10

Oh you’ll love me op. I have the same thing on holiday as I do at home, so porridge or fruit and yoghurt. The reason a) because I want to because I like it or I wouldn’t be eating it and b) because as soon as I get on a plane my bowels go ok it’s shut down time, so the fibre in my breakfast reassures them to keep working!

But mainly it’s a) because that’s what I like and I don’t stop liking it because I’m in Kuala Lumpur in a five star hotel.

Lumpyteats · Today 07:11

Also, why do you eat boring and unhealthy cornflakes for breakfast at home, OP?

MagpiePi · Today 07:12

I agree, but as you’ll discover OP, idly wondering about why people do things is considered judgy and a morally bad thing to do on MN.

The first two posts are completely typical but obviously they care that you’re being judgy of in an entirely non- judgmental, caring and morally superior way . 🤔

Alittlefrustrated · Today 07:16

It's nostalgia - reminds me of the 70's. They aren't something I'd have at home. Is that OK?

ChocolateCinderToffee · Today 07:21

Can’t remember the last time I ate cornflakes. Unpleasant things.

BlueSlate · Today 07:21

I have different things to what I have at home

So do I.

On weekdays, I have Greek yoghurt, berries and walnuts. At weekends, I have a cooked breakfast. My children always insisted on having croissants and pain au chocolat on their birthdays when they were younger so it just became a thing.

The only thing I absolutely never buy or eat for breakfast is cereal. I haven't had cornflakes as a regular breakfast since I was a child amd I'm in my 50s now.

So, yeah, if I'm staying a hotel, I am definitely going to have cornflakes for breakfast! 😍

Onlythisnamewasavailable · Today 07:21

I don't think OP is being judgy, the comments are harsh.

When I go on holiday I always eat what the locals etc. so in Asia that's rice dishes for breakfast.

I am also baffled by why people go to experience different cultures and then eat cornflakes. It's a fair enough question, coming from a place of curiosity I guess. Surely asking the question and reading the replies is how we learn to understand other people's perspectives??

It’s just a silly question, though. I mean, either they eat cornflakes at home and like them enough to eat them on holiday, or they don’t eat them at home and are eating them as an unfamiliar holiday thing. We’re staying in a hotel atm, and DS has had Cocoa-pops both days because it’s not anything he’d get at home.

Why is the OP wrong for asking a silly question though?
I don’t understand the hate that these kinds of inconsequential posts get.

TheoreticallyAdult · Today 07:25

A nice aside - cornflakes were invented as part of the bland diet needed to stop masturbation.

CurlewKate · Today 07:28

How do they answer the questions?

Anothercake · Today 07:28

Why are you staying in a hotel rather than building your own shelter from local materials? Your version of a holiday is not everyone's.

International foods are easy to get at home. You don't have to wait until you're on holiday to "try something different". Equally you might just want to eat some cornflakes.

RudePhthaloDalmadoodle · Today 07:33

Because cornflakes are delicious, particularly when swimming in full-fat cow's milk and loaded down with spoonfuls of white sugar. I'd like a Cherry Coke with mine, please. With ice.
