People having cornflakes in hotels abroad

Oblongtriangle · Today 07:04

I have stayed in many hotels across Europe. Why do many British people have cornflakes for breakfast? The most boring breakfast.
I have different things to what I have at home

OMG I thought this was troll comment but is it true

"As a Seventh-day Adventist reformer, John Harvey Kellogg believed that rich, spicy, or stimulating foods provoked sexual desires, and that a plain diet of whole grains would curb masturbation and related "ailments"."

😮😮😮😮

It's why the Buddhist vegan diet is so bland, it was a belief across a lot of religions. The Japanese traditional diet is considered the oldest example of that belief.

mishgs · Today 07:55

I wish my life was so free of worries, stresses and strains that I felt the need to comment on others people’s breakfasts choices.

tilypu · Today 07:55

I very rarely have cereal at home, and if I do it's never cornflakes, it's fruit and fibre.

So there's every chance that, if I am staying somewhere with cornflakes or rice krispies or some other cereal from my childhood, that one of the days I'm there I'll have some, for nostalgia's sake.

Judge away. Honestly, if what you are doing on your holiday is studying what other people are having for breakfast then I'm probably having the better time anyway.

Cornflakes were formulated by Dr. Kellogg to surpress sexual appetite and urges. Perhaps these people at breakfast are doing the other guests a favour by not fapping themselves stupid around the pool/wedding/conference centre.

Thank you for your service cornflake consumers.

Is that why I got banned from Premier Inn?

BugJuice · Today 07:57

I’ve never had corn flakes, I might try some next time I’m at a hotel buffet!

ShattonerfDaParp · Today 07:58

C'mon OP you know why; it is because us Brits are all ignorant, insular, bigoted smoothbrains who are inherently suspicious of foreign things like croissants and fruit. All other nationalities are better than us with their more cultured, adventurous, eclectic outlook on life. If only we had somebody who could instil some of those magical foreigners' joie de vivre into our uniformly dour national psyche.

Wait - maybe you could do it?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · Today 07:58

It's a reasonable question to ask. I sometimes wonder if all the people who flock round the breakfast buffet really eat like that at home? I mean, I would LOVE to have pastries for breakfast at home but I'd be the size of a house by now if I did that - I have no self control when croissants are concerned.

I would guess that some people like the predictability of cornflakes (having been with a man who would eat the same things at the same time of day, every day of the year, Christmas included). Some like the novelty (I don't have cornflakes in the house). Maybe they've got a huge lunch coming up and don't want to spoil their appetite. Maybe they are hungover and cornflakes is all they can manage.

It might be a dull question, but dull questions have validity too!

MustardGlass · Today 08:00

I don’t eat cornflakes at home and sometimes I am just over all the unhealthy cheap filler buffet breakfast food.

Drew79 · Today 08:00

I've sadly not been abroad for over 10 years.
When I do, I will not be spending an expensive holiday eating cheap processed children's shit cereal!

I think you’d find that I can make porridge as nice as yours.
With a choice of various toppings: honey, peanut butter, seeds or fruit, especially fresh figs.

Ooh…….get you with your fresh figs 🙄

Siennadollface · Today 08:02

People go on holiday for all different reasons. Food may not be the reason they've gone somewhere new... Live and let live.

The answer is very definitely, no.

If you go away and plan to eat like you do at home, you are doing holidays wrong.

ThatCyanCat · Today 08:03

I'm loving the competitive porridge making at 8am on Sunday.

Asunciondeflata · Today 08:04

Imagine going on holiday, having breakfast and looking forward to the day, thinking about what interesting or relaxing things you can do- but instead you look at what other people are eating and judge them.

Isn't that the fun part?

Enko · Today 08:06

I agree, but as you’ll discover OP, idly wondering about why people do things is considered judgy and a morally bad thing to do on MN.

The first two posts are completely typical but obviously they care that you’re being judgy of in an entirely non- judgmental, caring and morally superior way . 🤔

She wasn't wondering idly though.
She was judging.. its the "its the most boring breakfast"

As you can see for many posters its a bit of a novelty. Hence to them not a boring breakfast..

On a side line I really fancy cornflakes now and I know we haven't got any... wonder if I can talk.dh into going to the shops...

Comfort food
Convenient
May be wary of eating foreign food
Cautious of hygiene or buffet hot foods
Neurodivergence
Allergies or intolerance
Eating disorder
It's a normal breakfast meal

It doesn't effect you

I'm trying to recover from an Eating disorder and I hate people looking at or judging my food choices. It's a really sensitive topic for me so i make sure that I leave people alone when it comes to what they eat. You don't know what people are dealing with. It won't be that deep in most circumstances but you can never be sure.

ThingsAreNotWhatTheyWere · Today 08:07

Well, as a Coeliac, depending on how well geared up the hotel or B&B it, it may be one of the few options I can eat!

Franxi · Today 08:10

I have visions of the OP as a little Miss Marple, following people around the breakfast buffet trying to subtly provoke them into speaking so she find out which nationality they are.

I have coffee every morning at home. I drink it in bed. I do the same on holiday too.

Great advice. I hope things are going well for you. I never look at people's plates or judge what they're eating for that very reason. 💐

scalt · Today 08:11

This thread needs to be more Mumsnet. Are they wearing pyjamas and Ugg boots while they eat their cornflakes?

Takethehuntingquiche · Today 08:11

Why does it make a difference whether they eat it at home or in a hotel? They're probably having something else after anyway if it's a buffet

XenaSharples · Today 08:12

I once had egg and chips for breakfast when on holiday. It was very nice. I look forward to visiting London again.

Missey85 · Today 08:12

It's none of your business what others have for breakfast! Maybe just each your own?
