People having cornflakes in hotels abroad

Oblongtriangle · Today 07:04

I have stayed in many hotels across Europe. Why do many British people have cornflakes for breakfast? The most boring breakfast.
I have different things to what I have at home

OP posts:

We don’t have cereal at home, only porridge which is the breakfast dd and I have on a work day. Dh has Greek yogurt and nuts when he gets in to work. At the weekend dd has mushrooms on toast , dh has croissants and I have sour dough.

I went to a hotel a few weeks ago and I think I did have cornflakes, followed by a full Welsh breakfast though.

boxofcrap · Today 07:35

how do you know they eat cornflakes at home?

Lurkingandlearning · Today 07:37

Maybe they want to eat like the locals who like cornflakes for breakfast.

Sartre · Today 07:39

Why are you so bland you pay close attention to other people’s breakfast choices?

TheFinalNotch · Today 07:39

TheoreticallyAdult · Today 07:25

A nice aside - cornflakes were invented as part of the bland diet needed to stop masturbation.

OMG I thought this was troll comment but is it true

"As a Seventh-day Adventist reformer, John Harvey Kellogg believed that rich, spicy, or stimulating foods provoked sexual desires, and that a plain diet of whole grains would curb masturbation and related "ailments"."

The most boring thread topic, more like.

Justanotherteacher · Today 07:41

Because they’re heavily fortified and therefore a great way to keep your iron consumption up?

MookieBananas · Today 07:45

We don't eat cornflakes. DS1 who has fod issues only eats cornflakes (and/or baked beans) when on holiday It seems to mark the 'it's a holiday' chip in his brain.

I eat raw chopped radishes, cucumber, tomatos marinated in herbs, lemon juice and a bit of olive oil with sour dough bread and a boiled egg every day for breakfast, OP. AIBU to ask why you don't do the same? 🙄😆

MyDeftDuck · Today 07:46

I bet the OP isn’t brave enough to actually ask a British tourist why they eat cornflakes for breakfast in a hotel abroad……….. if anyone were to ask me that question under those circumstances I would be telling them to mind their own bloody business!
For context, I have porridge for breakfast at home…….but never abroad because no one, I repeat NO ONE, makes it like I do! Therefore I have CORNFLAKES!

hellospring26 · Today 07:46

Personally, I don’t, I don’t like cereal. It’s never crossed my mind what other people eat.

retiringtoCelesteville · Today 07:47

I’d have them because I like cornflakes but I wouldn’t have them at home, opting instead for a high fibre cereal.

whatsit84 · Today 07:47

I see people are disagreeing but also find it odd when people go on holiday and eat the same things as at home. That is because I think one of the greatest parts of a holiday is trying local dishes, others presumably don’t think the same. Each to their own!

ThatJadeLion · Today 07:49

I haven't had cornflakes at home since the mid 90s so this is probably something I'd eat for breakfast on holiday as it's novelty!

DoloresDelEriba · Today 07:50

Dullest thread ever.

I think you’d find that I can make porridge as nice as yours.
With a choice of various toppings: honey, peanut butter, seeds or fruit, especially fresh figs.

I sometimes have cornflakes because i never buy them at home, and I might fancy them as a one-off if I see them on a breakfast buffet.
Is that OK with you?

I’m exactly the same with coco pops. We don’t have cereal at home and when I’m in a hotel and see coco pops, my breakfast “starter” is always a nice big bowl of coco pops. The OP would judge me so much, I’m sure!

Why is the OP wrong for asking a silly question though?
I don’t understand the hate that these kinds of inconsequential posts get.

Yup

Boomer55 · Today 07:50

I love cornflakes - so it’s each to their own I guess. 🤷‍♀️

MeowDoku · Today 07:51

We were in Greece this summer, I had Greek yoghurt, fruit, nuts/seeds and a little honey for breakfast every day, you might've seen me and thought ooh look she's trying something local, it's what I eat for breakfast every day at home. I don't enjoy cereals for breakfast and I don't want hot or greasy food in the morning, so fruit and yoghurt is fine for me.

Girasoli · Today 07:51

Non-British people.eat cereal as their normal breakfast too.

I used to work on a hotel.that catered mostly for Italian and German tourists and we had brioche, bread, yoghurt, and cereal available for breakfast.

Yes, very true. I suggest you don't read much more on what else he suggested for that purpose. Cornflakes are tame.

I don't think OP is being judgy, the comments are harsh.

When I go on holiday I always eat what the locals etc. so in Asia that's rice dishes for breakfast.

I am also baffled by why people go to experience different cultures and then eat cornflakes. It's a fair enough question, coming from a place of curiosity I guess. Surely asking the question and reading the replies is how we learn to understand other people's perspectives??

When you are in Asia ask them why they have to be searched, within an inch of their life, because they are taking food they've eaten their whole lives, into Australia. Even food that you can buy in Australia. One of the reasons is familiarity.
Watch other nationalities, they do the same. I know lots of Black Africans, it can take years until they try foods they aren't used to, when they settle in the UK. Indian people etc carry on cooking what they've always cooked. None of it is necessarily healthier than what British people eat. Sometimes it is wanting to avoid an upset stomach, so they go for something safe. Some people can't stomach a cooked breakfast, or anything with flavour, first thing. I've travelled with different nationalities and all types of people, gastro issues are more common than people realise. You can still enjoy a holiday if you have a sprained wrist, but if your stomach is off, the holiday is a write off.

Moistcottonchafers · Today 07:54

Cornflakes were formulated by Dr. Kellogg to surpress sexual appetite and urges. Perhaps these people at breakfast are doing the other guests a favour by not fapping themselves stupid around the pool/wedding/conference centre.

Thank you for your service cornflake consumers.

redfairy · Today 07:54

I guess we all like familiarity. It always makes me smile that it's usually the Brits lining up at the toaster. Personally I alternate between the traditional cereal toast day, to coffee, cakes and pastry day, to a meat, cheese and egg day. I'm cosmopolitan 😁

Because some people are different from you and like a predictable breakfast?

Predictable breakfast 😂
