People having cornflakes in hotels abroad

Oblongtriangle · Today 07:04

I have stayed in many hotels across Europe. Why do many British people have cornflakes for breakfast? The most boring breakfast.
I have different things to what I have at home

This thread needs to be more Mumsnet. Are they wearing pyjamas and Ugg boots while they eat their cornflakes?

And can you tell how many showers theyve had since yesterday morning? If its less than 5 that is of course unacceptable

Fluffypiki · Today 08:13

I never buy corn flakes so when away I use the opportunity 🤷‍♀️.

Without fresh figs!

Without fresh figs!

I couldn't start the day without fresh figs. I've never worn Uggs, I hope that's not a point against me.

For me I have to eat boring bland food for a day or so when I go on holiday. The stress of travelling plays havoc and it takes a day or two for everything to work correctly again. So yes I'd be the boring one eating cornflakes but then I know I wouldn't have to spend a day of my holiday feeling rotten. Once I've acclimatised I'd be mixing it up a little.

There are many reasons to why someone might eat cornflakes on holiday.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · Today 08:17

It's probably because they have changed the recipe of Sugar Puffs and also many hotels do not offer Coco Pops.

Of course there is also the mistaken belief that strange foreign foods can give one an upset tummy and so the best option really is Corn Flakes.

scalt · Today 08:18

Perhaps there's an emergency in the kitchen. There's a story by Joan Aiken called "The Serial Garden" which begins with the father accidentally locking himself in the larder, and the mother sending her son out to the shops to buy cereal, saying "unless you want daddy to pass you cornflakes through the larder ventilator, flake by flake."

I think it’s more likely to be the older generation who have bowel issues and cannot tolerate too much fat, spice, flavour, dairy etc. So, if planning a trip, for example, they eat something they know won’t cause an upset stomach.

Or maybe they just fancied cornflakes.

Judgy McJudgyFace! Come on, OP - what you’re saying kinda has a bit of a “Brits are xenophobic, and boring breakfast barbarians” subtext 😉

Simonjt · Today 08:23

Due to allergies we can rarely eat buffet breakfasts, cereals are usually boxes so they’re safe to eat.

I haven't had cornflakes at home since the mid 90s so this is probably something I'd eat for breakfast on holiday as it's novelty!

Exactly this! I never buy cornflakes even though I like them and so I’d likely eat them on holiday if they’re an option.

They’re also a safe food - everyone likes them, they tend to all taste the same and no one’s going to get poorly over them.

You don't have to be old to have that problem unfortunately 😳tbh I'd probably skip breakfast entirely

Asunciondeflata · Today 08:25

I remember staying in a hotel in Turkey and all they offered for breakfast was those very sweet claggy pastries. I would have loved cornflakes.

Honestly, we’re all different. This is really not an AIBU.

OMG I thought this was troll comment but is it true

"As a Seventh-day Adventist reformer, John Harvey Kellogg believed that rich, spicy, or stimulating foods provoked sexual desires, and that a plain diet of whole grains would curb masturbation and related "ailments"."

😮😮😮😮

🤣👏Yes I’d heard that - too funny!

ChubbyCheeksCharlie · Today 08:31

Lots of people are the same. Japanese eating the Japanese breakfast staples, indians eating the Indian staples. Go to a big hotel in eg. Singapore, and you'll see it.

Gwenna · Today 08:32

ThatCyanCat · Today 07:53

Yes, very true. I suggest you don't read much more on what else he suggested for that purpose. Cornflakes are tame.

Pray tell @ThatCyanCat you can’t leave us at first base… 🤣

Because cornflakes are delicious, particularly when swimming in full-fat cow's milk and loaded down with spoonfuls of white sugar. I'd like a Cherry Coke with mine, please. With ice.

Cornflakes have been around forever. That must be because people really like them even if you don’t personally.

Gwenna · Today 08:36

Onlythisnamewasavailable · Today 07:21

I don't think OP is being judgy, the comments are harsh.

When I go on holiday I always eat what the locals etc. so in Asia that's rice dishes for breakfast.

I am also baffled by why people go to experience different cultures and then eat cornflakes. It's a fair enough question, coming from a place of curiosity I guess. Surely asking the question and reading the replies is how we learn to understand other people's perspectives??

Quite, @Onlythisnamewasavailable but I’m not sure cosmopolitan curiosity is the OP’s stance with this post.

Healthy, filling and suit personal taste presumably.
