People having cornflakes in hotels abroad

Oblongtriangle · Today 07:04

I have stayed in many hotels across Europe. Why do many British people have cornflakes for breakfast? The most boring breakfast.
I have different things to what I have at home

You consider them really unhealthy junk food? Jeese.

They are, though!

vodkaredbullgirl · Today 09:04

OMG how dare they 😆

MrsVBS · Today 09:04

I never eat cornflakes at home ever but always have them in a hotel, I never for one moment thought it would be of anyone else’s concern. I think eggs are boring but doesn’t cross my mind to wonder why others have them.

I don't think OP is being judgy, the comments are harsh.

When I go on holiday I always eat what the locals etc. so in Asia that's rice dishes for breakfast.

I am also baffled by why people go to experience different cultures and then eat cornflakes. It's a fair enough question, coming from a place of curiosity I guess. Surely asking the question and reading the replies is how we learn to understand other people's perspectives??

I have ARFID and people have commented on my food choices my whole life - it does start to feel judgy.

Just because I’m not eating local food doesn’t mean I’m not experiencing the culture of the place I’m visiting. I love travel and I’m fortunate enough to travel the world for work. I’ve seen and experienced a whole range of different cultures. The fact I lived off my small list of safe, bland food doesn’t negate any of that.

Excellent points. What a person has for breakfast doesn't explain their cultural attitudes.
That is judgemental.

TwoTigers · Today 09:08

I assume most people eat a healthier breakfast daily in terms of something wholegrain, protein or say yogurt and berries, so when they go away they treat themselves with something different.

Greenlawnbrownlawn · Today 09:09

I dunno. I once had cornflakes with hot milk abroad because I didn't understand the breakfast buffet. Never had that at home, maybe that's what they're having for a change?

Anyway, if the hotel offers Cornflakes, why not. Who cares. I don't, you shouldn't.

Is it really British people who are like this or just English people actually? I find that the Scots and Welsh are much more open to embracing the food of another culture, whereas English people stick with the same stodgy inedible crap that the country is (in)famous for.

Morning Debbie! Yes, believe it or not, some people make stereotypical judgements! 😉

Asunciondeflata · Today 09:09

There's only one acceptable use for cornflakes!

Excellent 👌🏼

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · Today 09:11

I bloody love cornflakes.

TheBers · Today 09:11

On holiday in Europe, DH always has a roll with a slice of cheese and puts honey on it. He was given honey and cheese in France once so now it’s his thing. He eats it really slowly, nodding his head appreciatively. I think it’s massively wanky and performative and if he liked it that much he’d have the same at home.
He travels loads for work so breakfast abroad isn’t a novelty. So yes, I totally understand how other peoples breakfast choices can be annoying Op.

Thank you for letting me get that of my chest everyone else.

Branleuse · Today 09:12

Cornflakes are really underrated tbh.

As for having them on holiday, surely it would be as well as everything else on the buffet?

Spidey66 · Today 09:16

goo lord what a strange thing to say!

fwiw I don’t have cornflakes in a hotel because it’s something I have it every day. I often have coco pops or rice crispies because we don’t have it at home.

echt · Today 09:20

Stupid, goady drive-by post.

Yawn.

Don't feed the troll.

Yes it really riles me up people stereotyping the Scottish and Welsh as if they are all like the English when they are not. I just have to correct the record on that one.

brownbootsandhats · Today 09:21

Let people eat what they want. I can’t understand a thread about something so trivial and personally un affecting. I admit I was expecting slurping them with tables too close or something when I opened this up

you like to have different things - maybes they don’t ?

perhaps cornflakes are different to their normal breakfast ?

perhaps they have digestive problems and need to eat carefully and safely ?

RikthePoet · Today 09:22

MagpiePi · Today 07:12

I agree, but as you’ll discover OP, idly wondering about why people do things is considered judgy and a morally bad thing to do on MN.

The first two posts are completely typical but obviously they care that you’re being judgy of in an entirely non- judgmental, caring and morally superior way . 🤔

Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.

I wouldn't say the OP is being judgemental, but she is sure being thick.

"Why do people eat cornflakes?", indeed. Why on earth would they do that. It's impossible to fathom.

It's the MN thing of literally not understanding (see: "find it baffling", always baffling) something you don't like or approve of. Someone once said she had "never understood the concept of Christmas pyjamas" and someone else asked what exactly she was struggling with. I still laugh when I think of it.

Good one! The OP probably won't be back, that's the usual pattern.

Probably eating a bowl of cornflakes in secret 😆

Most hotels do buffet breakfasts so you can have corn flakes and other things (if you want). I’ve been to many hotels and this has never once crossed my mind or bothered me. It’s quite a strange thing to even think about.

Floatlikeafeather2 · Today 09:28

What you need to do, @Oblongtriangle , is ask the management of the "many hotels across Europe" that you frequent to stop offering cornflakes as a choice at breakfast. That'll teach the oiks to be more cosmopolitan like what you are.

Or the other recent one where a poster found food being offered at parties to be baffling 😂

Idly wondering why people do something where the potential reasons are really very obvious is when people get annoyed because OP is so clearly looking down on the people she is talking about.

You dont need to be even vaguely smart or empathetic to understand why people might eat cornflakes on holiday. So its not a genuine question.
