People having cornflakes in hotels abroad

I have stayed in many hotels across Europe. Why do many British people have cornflakes for breakfast? The most boring breakfast.
I have different things to what I have at home

Cocoa pops for me.

I LOVE cocoa pops. But I know they are not a good idea for the day to day.

So when I go on holidays I suck those babies down at an alarming rate.

I COULD buy a box at home, but I would get fat.

It's probably because they have changed the recipe of Sugar Puffs and also many hotels do not offer Coco Pops.

Of course there is also the mistaken belief that strange foreign foods can give one an upset tummy and so the best option really is Corn Flakes.

It's just a breakfast cereal choice, Janet. Wow, now you choose the healthy option and you're still a moral failure!

SuperGinger · Today 08:45

I love cornflakes I had a bowl after giving birth and they remain in my mind as one the best meals I've ever had, I occasionally have them out of nostalgia and enjoy them enormously, especially if they are crisp and the milk is cold.

gannett · Today 08:45

Breakfast isn't an important meal to me at any time, it's an autopilot routine to start the day - cereal with milk, no thinking necessary.

On holiday my goal is to be hungry for the important meals (lunch and dinner) so breakfast is even more of a small, token thing.

Indeed! Years ago I taught in a secondary school in Whitechapel with what they call "hard to reach children". I started my day with a huge bowl of Crunchy Nut Cornflakes, a strong coffee and sometimes neurofen.
Don't judge, OP!

The best way to avoid having an upset stomach abroad is to eat similarly to the way you do at home. I like to try local cuisine but have to be careful because it doesn't always agree with me. I tend to keep breakfast and lunch fairly bland and maybe try something different at dinner.

TheChosenTwo · Today 08:54

You’d certainly judge what I get excited about on a holiday breakfast - it’s toast! I don’t eat breakfast at home, just lunch and dinner. I also don’t eat toast at home, I love it too much and would eat so much, I restrict it to a holiday treat 😂
I do also have other things but toast is always my first breakfast course and my god it’s the best food 😋

Cornflakes have been around forever. That must be because people really like them even if you don’t personally.

Actually they are a perfect example of how people can be sold the idea that something is healthy and nutritious when actually it's not. They've been around for 150 years.

Takingtigermountainbystrategy · Today 08:57

Sometimes it's the only gluten free or vegan option. I once had rice Krispies with apple juice poured on in a hotel in Italy as it was literally the only thing I could eat .

Felixthewonderdog · Today 08:57

Perhaps they don’t have them at home? We don’t buy cereal

MickyMoonshine · Today 08:57

Because I have ARFID and stick to food which I know is ‘safe’.
Not that it has anything to do with you.

Onlythisnamewasavailable · Today 08:57

@Ponoka7 most upset stomachs when abroad come from poor hand hygiene, drinking the local water, eating fruit that doesn't come with a rind/skin eating raw veg/salads that are washed in local water, or ice in drinks. There was a research study that found that a lot of the germs came from the handling of local currency (if old notes). Obviously checking for fully cooked food too, as you would at home.

I always sanitise my hands before eating, and avoid the things I just mentioned as high risk and have never had a bad stomach abroad. I always eat street food as well, and don't shy away from spice.

Education, common sense and taking precautions avoids the vast majority of upset stomachs (although nothing is 100%)

I often have cornflakes with breakfast in hotels as we never have it at home. It’s really unhealthy junk food but when I’m away usual ‘rules’ on healthy eating don’t apply and so I will happily (and eagerly) eat cornflakes as a treat.

BaronessBomburst · Today 08:58

There's only one acceptable use for cornflakes!

I’m exactly the same with coco pops. We don’t have cereal at home and when I’m in a hotel and see coco pops, my breakfast “starter” is always a nice big bowl of coco pops. The OP would judge me so much, I’m sure!

I love coco pops. Always wanted them as a kid, especially in the mini packs. Spoiler: never got them

DebbieSavage · Today 09:00

Is it really British people who are like this or just English people actually? I find that the Scots and Welsh are much more open to embracing the food of another culture, whereas English people stick with the same stodgy inedible crap that the country is (in)famous for.

You consider them really unhealthy junk food? Jeese.

I have no idea why someone would have Kellogs on holiday. However, the last holiday breakfast bar I was at had cornflakes that I hadn't had before. They were delicious, not at all like Kellogs.

Fizbosshoes · Today 09:00

If for example a French or Japanese person had cornflakes, would that be ok because they were eating foreign food?
Would a French person eating a croissant be getting a similar amount of side-eye at the buffet....?

Goatinthegarden · Today 09:01

I don’t eat breakfast at home but absolutely adore a hotel breakfast. The most exciting bit is day one, having a little wander around gawping at everything. I don’t usually bother with cereal because it’s never been my favourite option, but I’m sure it’s exciting to some people - my brother loved all the choice when we were kids.

I take my primary school class on a residential every year and when the other options are limited, I quite enjoy the novelty of a bowl of cornflakes.

SparklingBettie · Today 09:02

I love toast. Enough to queue up behind 10 people to cook it at a communal toaster? No way. Maybe the the people eating cornflakes are the sensible ones not wasting 20 mins of breakfast cooking bread
