How long do you take to get up and out to work in the morning?

I set my alarm at 6.40am to leave at 7.40. The time it takes me to actually get ready, ie shower, make up, breakfast, dressed etc is about 35 mins but as I work in a school and so can't use the loo unless it's at break or lunchtime, I like to have the extra time in case I need a poo after breakfast! Kids have left home so don't have anyone else to worry about.

Just musing if that's quick, slow or about average.

Alarm goes off at 6am, snooze it for 15 mins and then shower, get dressed, sort my packed lunch and out the house at 7.10 or 7.30 depending if train or driving. Can’t get up earlier .

I get up at 6.50.

I have to drive dd to our village to catch her bus to school for 7.20, feed ddog and sometimes walk her but usually a run around the garden, get DS and myself ready and breakfast (me - hair & makeup) and we both leave the house for work and school at 8.30

I have almost everything ready the night before - uniforms laid out, my outfit chosen, my bag packed.

peculiarlondon · Yesterday 19:08

30-35 mins. Pack bag and choose outfit the night before. Up at 5.45, shower, v quick makeup and blow dry, cup of tea, then leave the house by 6.20 to get to the tube station a few minutes away. You pay off-peak if you tap in before 6.30 so that's an incentive to get going. Breakfast when I get to the office. DC are now adults and we don't have pets, so only me to worry about, and I like to get in early - but I do only have to do it twice a week as wfh the rest of the time. After years of getting the dc ready and to nursery/ breakfast club/school etc my current routine seems pretty good. If I could bear not to wash my hair daily I could probably get it down to 20.

When I worked (retired now) I got up at 7am and could be out of the door with hair washed, essential toileting, make up on, breakfast (cereal and toast) in 45 mins! Now it's 95 to 120 mins!

CrushingOnRubies · Yesterday 19:11

get up at 6:15 leave the house at 7:20. Or that’s the aim anyway. That’s to get me and dog ready and to have a cup of tea , do wordle and wake up to face the world.

weareallcats · Yesterday 19:14

Ages, absolutely ages - I can’t stand feeling rushed in the morning, would much rather get up earlier. Around 3 hours is ideal - I spend a lot of time pottering about, drinking tea, I can be dressed and ready in half an hour.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · Yesterday 19:15

Alarm goes off at 6 and I start at 7:45 or 9 depending on if I have to get DD2 to school or not. In that time, I shower, have a cup of tea, make packed lunches, get DD2 and DS ready for school, nag DD1 to get herself sorted and out the door…

If I just had to get me sorted, I’d be able to do it in about 45 minutes, including drinking my tea.

Gwenhwyfar · Yesterday 19:16

Takes me hours just to feel awake.

sunnysheila · Yesterday 19:20

40 mins. Tea, breakfast, toilet, shower, make up; make coffee for journey; grab bag and go. Everything readied as much as possible the night before

Bed to desk in 10-15 mins for me!

I WFH, so shower in the evenings. I don’t wear makeup and my hair is brushed and put into a ponytail as stupid perimenopause makes my head and neck sweat too much otherwise.

The once a month I’m in the office is similar but I get up an hour before I start to give me 15 mins spare on to of the 30 mins to get there.

I haven’t needed my alarm for months now though - luckily my boss has been amazing and has been letting me work whatever hours suit me… so I’ve been doing between 5 and 5:30am starts, finishing at 1-1:30pm which has been lovely! It’s the only thing good to come out of peri. If I had to stick to my 8am start time I’d be exhausted come 4pm as it wouldn’t stop me waking between 3 and 5am… and I don’t need that long to get ready!

Varies from 40 to 95 minutes when going to work. Part of this variation is disability related. Part of this is I travel by bus so when I leave for work depends on a bus (and some days I can't be arsed to run for it if late so will wait for the next one which adds 20 minutes), part of it is that I live with 6 other people and may get lost in conversation, and part is what tasks I end up doing before I go out.

I get sweaty overnight so need a shower, and I need to do it around others needing to do the same. Today, a Sunday, I had a hospital appointment this morning and still spent almost 20 minutes reading while waiting for others to finish in the shower room. From end of shower to leaving the house was less than 10 minutes because of when the next bus was and Sunday buses are once an hour. I tossed on clothes, my coat, shoes, and bag, pulled my hair up, talked to the teenagers who were around, and was out the door.

I do make getting ready for work easier by having several suits with all outerwear on the same hangar, just need to add undergarments. I also keep my bag, shoes, and coat near where I keep my morning pills. Once I'm out of the shower, it's smoothly from one thing I need to do to the next, but sometimes the kids need some extra time before they leave or I realise I forgot something last night that I'd like to do before I go to work. Luckily I work where there is a flexible start time, and I always have enough more than enough flexi if I need a later start due to flareup or teen crisis.

I’m here wondering how people are having breakfast at home tbh

I just make some porridge and eat at my desk and have coffee at work

I’d rather just leave

my kids are fed at school and nursery so I don’t even make breakfast for anyone - maybe a bannna at most

I’m wondering how someone can’t work out that lots of jobs won’t allow for eating at their desk 😆

Teachers, doctors, nurses, people working in shops…all people who probably can’t eat while doing their job. So they probably want to eat before they leave the house.

bugalugs45 · Yesterday 19:31

I get up , go downstairs , let dog out , then I feed him, back upstairs shower and dressed , no make up , no drink, straight out the door , less than 30 minutes .

drogon6 · Yesterday 19:37

I get up at 7 and leave the house at about 8:40. In that time I have a bath, wash hair, make up, get my lunch ready (dc both have school dinners), see older dh off and get younger dc ready. Sometimes clean round and get a quick load of laundry on the line. Often a poo. And almost always running late.

MiddleAgedDread · Yesterday 19:37

Some days I’m up and out in under 30min but usually if I’m going to the gym or walking in and then I shower/do hair at work.

Ilovecheeseyah · Yesterday 19:41

If I want to look well groomed 1.5 hours
if I want to look ok 30m
if I want to look passable 1 hour

for me the key is the state of mind when leaving the house… for that I need time to get in the right headspace and prepare my clothes and make up as “armor”.

Also, a warm breakfast, lots of coffee
and a few star jumps
help!

TheVelvetCell · Yesterday 19:42

45 minutes including a shower but not a hair wash. Also not including breakfast as I bring overnight oats and a travel mug of tea with me.

I agree some jobs wont let you eat at desks! I assume they will have a morning break where they can eat perhaps. I do eat mine at my desk, but not until 10am. I am just never hungry first thing in the morning

HollyIvie · Yesterday 19:48

45 mins to get me and the kids out the door.

TheFormidableMrsC · Yesterday 19:50

I get up at 6.30 so that I can have half an hour for tea, scrolling and waking up. Shower at 7, wake teen at 7.15. Make up, hair, getting dressed and coffee are done by 8. We leave at 8.15. I do have everything ready the night before so it’s less stressful.

AgeingMillennial · Yesterday 19:53

The kids wake me between 6.30 and 7 usually, I take them downstairs and get their breakfast and into their clothes while DH showers. He then drives the youngest to nursery at 8am, DD watches CBBC while I have a quick shower and get dressed. At 8.30 I take her to school. I eat my breakfast when I get back (wfh), usually just toast as I read my emails. DH takes overnight oats to eat at his desk as he works from the office most days.

ChicGreyZebra · Yesterday 20:07

30 mins - alarm goes off at 6 and I’m showered, dressed, coffee in travel mug and out the door by 6.30.

LetaLestrange · Yesterday 20:07

I’m up at 6.15 & straight in the shower. Kids’ alarms go off at 6.30 but sometimes need hassling if they’re not up by 6.40. We have breakfast together then they need a little time to chill while I finish getting ready. We are out the door at 7.15 as my 10yo catches a train at 7.25. I drop the 8yo at school and am at my office for 8.
